AIBU to hate wrapping presents?

I lose the sellotape, the paper tears, the scissors are crap, my back ends up aching with perching on the edge of the settee, the dogs just plays with the paper and I end up chasing him, and I hate, hate, wrapping presents!!

Wrapping needs to be done on a table, OP. That's where you are going wrong.

Alternatively, if you take my constantly bickering DC away for an hour or 24 I would happily do it for you in exchange Grin. I do like wrapping stuff, but am yet again running out of time and will end up doing it badly when over-tired and not enjoying it at all. Yours, OTOH, I could do when the DC are around, so none of the same time constraints.

cheekycurls · 21/12/2011 12:47

I love wrapping! Xmas Grin
I have a collection of nearly 100 rolls of paper so every present is different, ribbons, bows and every one has a tag on! I've even gone as far as wrapping all the stocking fillers Xmas Blush

but I have done it as I've gone along so not a massive task

the tape dispenser is my best friend Xmas Blush

tildorcapedfruit · 21/12/2011 12:48

I love it Xmas Grin

aldiwhore · 21/12/2011 12:51

Love wrapping presents.

Christmas film on, wine open, fire lit, tape in a dispenser, decent scissors, the crappest of crapola paper for the kids presents (its the law) and gorgeous over the top stiff paper for my mother.

I want to go out and buy more gifts just so I can keep wrapping. I've wrapped all the Christmas treat food as well (tins of chocolates, biscuits, even cheese biscuits) and am sorely tempted to starting wrapping crisps, individually.

I adore wrapping presents.

LoveInASnowyClimate · 21/12/2011 12:56

I want some more things to wrap now! DH has gone out to get some bits for the adults' stockings, which I hadn't planned to wrap, but I think I will now.

midnightexpress · 21/12/2011 13:02

I quite like it normally, but after wrapping 50 books for P1 Xmas pressies for school and a further 60 selection boxes for the Christmas fair, i'm finding the magic has worn off a little. Am spending the morning doing it otday so it's done and dusted before the DC break up this afternoon. Gah.

Sellotape dispenser definitely makes life more bearable.

cheekycurls · 21/12/2011 13:02

aldiwhore brilliant! Xmas Grin

Francagoestohollywood · 21/12/2011 13:05

YANBU, I am crap at wrapping things. I look at those beautiful pics of presents in the magazines... then I look at mine and they look crap, no matter how beautiful the wrapping paper is.

5Foot5 · 21/12/2011 13:05

I quite like it too.As previous poster says - good scissors and a sellotape dispenser.

Other tips:

  • sit at the table. I used to try and sit on the floor to do it but I ended up getting dead legs and bits going everywhere.
  • buy everyone easy shapes like books or things in boxes!

However, ended up wrapping DDs pressies at midnight last night on the bedroom floor. When she was little I could rely on a good 2 hours after she had gone to bed to get all that done. Now she is 16 and on holiday so she only went to be before me because I insisted

Rara27 · 21/12/2011 13:08

Hmmm... this year I have spent hours watching my OH doing it :o I used to love it, but now with 3 kids it is just a nightmare.

ViviPrudolf · 21/12/2011 13:10

Aldi Xmas Grin you'll wrap the DCs if you're not careful

Haziedoll · 21/12/2011 13:12

I actually can't wrap presents. Dh has tried to teach me but I'm too cack-handed.

ViviPrudolf · 21/12/2011 13:14

I am a wrapping aficionado. All my awkward shaped gifts go in boxes. I have one of these . I buy a mile of wired ribbon. There will be brown paper with silver wired ribbon and matte silver paper with old gold wire ribbon. The 'Prugifts look nearly as awesome as the 'Prutree. [fsmug]

SantaffetaClaus · 21/12/2011 13:17

I hate it, but that is largely due to resentment at having to source, order and wrap many relative's gifts to my children and myself.

I used to like nice paper etc but just CBA now. We shove everything under the tree, and whilst it would start off looking all tasteful and matchy matchy, people would start giving the DC gifts in the most appalling naff old wrap in different types of wrap so it all ends up a mish mash anyway.

I never, ever have enough gift tags. It pisses me off every year. Every year I swear I'll buy more and every year I baulk at their price. I CBA to make them as am no good at that kind of stuff, so the latter presents just get written on the wrap. Xmas Blush

BabyGiraffes · 21/12/2011 13:17

Hate it. Especially when the sellotape runs out or collects fluff from the carpet. And when I tell myself it's okay to put labels on later... and promptly forget what's in each package, leading to frowning and much shaking and prodding.

LoveInASnowyClimate · 21/12/2011 13:18

Oh yes, and keep boxes throughout the year so you can box up awkward shapes. I also box gift vouchers so they look nicer under the tree, are less likely to be missed and accidentally binned, and there is more of an element of surprise than an envelope. I also try to wrap gift vouchers around something associated with the vouchers - eg this year, I have got my mother manicure vouchers, which I have wrapped with a box of nail varnishes and nice hand stuff for between-manicure maintenance. It can be hard, though - I've got my DB and DF shooting lessons (not totally random, they do shoot already!) and couldn't think of anything to wrap the vouchers around that wasn't too expensive or total duplication of stuff they already have (they really didn't need another hip flask, for instance), so they ended up just going in nicely wrapped boxes for a bit more of an element of surprise on the day. The boxes don't have to be smart or anything - the shooting vouchers went in the boxes the hinges came in with an Ikea wardrobe!

ViviPrudolf · 21/12/2011 13:22

I think I've found my giftwrapping soulmate, Love. The wardrobe in the spare room is choc-full of empty cardboard boxes awaiting their awkward shaped gifts Xmas Grin

LoveInASnowyClimate · 21/12/2011 13:25

Vivi - I was just coveting your tape dispenser! My boxes are all stacked up next to the sofa in the guest room - guests probably think I'm some kind of mad box hoarder (TBF, they'd have a point!).

Abcinthia · 21/12/2011 13:28

YANBU. I hate it wrapping presents. Though this year it wasn't too bad. Hardly any of the presents were in awkward shapes and I didn't have a dog and cat sat on the wrapping paper or attacking my just wrapped presents.

twincrazy · 21/12/2011 13:31

Dont mind it...but do like looking at all the lovely paper and bows etc and unusual stuff to go on too, but some of my side wouldnt appreciate it, so this year ive done bags with tissue paper..done...much easier

JinglePosyPerkin · 21/12/2011 13:37

I used to be just like you Aldi Xmas Smile. Now, I start off like that and end up half-cut on the 23rd/24th throwing paper & tape at the DSs presents because they are bloody well always around!

MoChan · 21/12/2011 13:40

I do mine sitting on the floor, shifting uncomfortably and getting pins and needles and aching limbs and back. Even plentiful booze does not dull the pain. I used to like it (partly because I am very neat at it and everyone always admires my parcels) but these days I HATE IT.

PercyFilth · 21/12/2011 13:43

I never, ever have enough gift tags

Last year's Christmas cards and a pair of pinking shears Wink

Scissors will do in the absence of pinking shears, but the zigzag edges look better. Very little effort required - you can punch a hole and stick a bit of gift tie or ribbon through, but you don't have to bother if you CBA. But it's a job that can be done after Xmas, ready for next year, so if you do it away from all the rush and pressure, it can be quite fun.

My best wrapping tip is not to use too much paper - cut away any extra before you start trying to fold in the edges.

MildlyNarkyPuffin · 21/12/2011 13:47

I buy all the ribbons etc I need to wrap things nicely and I can never make it work. I end up with plain wrapped presents, discarded tangles of ribbon and a feeling of inadequacy.

Shakey1500 · 21/12/2011 13:47

Hate it and I'm also rubbish at it. My sister on the other hand, wraps beautifully all the corners the same length, no rips in the paper, perfect ribbon, tissue paper (what IS all that about??)
