chav

no i do not think i am being unreasonable to think that those who call other people chavs are idiots, why do you need to belittle in such a way does it make you feel better, make you feel more middle class, do you think it makes you appear more intelligent Hmm what little small minded world do you live in that someone calling a child a particular name or nickname immediately means to you they are chavs

really its a little pathetic

Is this thread bourn out of a particular incident, OP?

pictish · 20/12/2011 09:49

ViviPrudolf · 20/12/2011 09:53

Has someone on the name assumptions thread deemed your DC's name to be chavvy?

FreudianSlipper · 20/12/2011 09:55

usualsuspect · 20/12/2011 09:58

I agree OP

Awful word ,used to look down on people

slavetofilofax · 20/12/2011 10:00

It's no worse than a chav calling soemone else stuck up or a snob.

WhereTheWildThingsWere · 20/12/2011 10:01

Terrible word. I prefer to call people cunts.

thepeoplesprincess · 20/12/2011 10:01

If it walks like a duck, and quacks like a duck then it's a chav.

I don't understand what's wrong with looking down on them tbh. Are we supposed to congratulate them for their appalling taste in sportswear and complete antipathy towards anything vaguely intellectual?

ViviPrudolf · 20/12/2011 10:05

Its not clever, but it is a catch-all term that people generally understand so its going to be used. Doesn't bother me. But then I wouldn't use it as I'm aware it will alienate some people besides, I prefer 'plebeian', far more poetic.

Kayano · 20/12/2011 10:06

YABU

They are charvas Grin

DoesNotGiveAFig · 20/12/2011 10:08

Haha! In your mind chav is an insult. This seems to be your problem.

Some chavs work hard to be given that label.

pictish · 20/12/2011 10:14

I know - some of them put quite a lot of effort into their chavvy wardrobe and life philosophy you know. Those Kappa trackies bottoms and SuperDry jackets don't come cheap. It takes a lot of commitment to build up a collection of every xbox game ever released, to sit alongside all the bedtime DVDs in the beech veneer tv unit. Kayden and Khloey would never settle for 11pm without them!
YABU!

ThisIsANickname · 20/12/2011 10:21

You know what else is a way of looking down your nose at people? Wrapping yourself in a smug sense of satisfaction because you don't do something you deem beneath you; not using the word "chav" comes to mind.

It's just a word. It has no power until you give it some. So, someone thinks a name is chavvy? Why do you care? Especially as these names aren't your names or the names of your children.

In the words of the amazing Steve Hughes "Don't worry about it; (they're) are a dick."

ViviPrudolf · 20/12/2011 10:21

My best friend is marketing manager for Footlocker. A lot of effort goes into creating just that perfect chav aesthetic you know.

AMumInScotland · 20/12/2011 10:27

"Chav" is no more or less of an insult than "middle class" is - why are you so happy to label a group of people with a term you clearly consider to be an insult, if you think it's "pathetic" for them to do it to "chavs"?

DontPetTheSweatyThings · 20/12/2011 10:30

*no not on the list of so called chavvy names

and neither is mine and never likely to be*

sounds like even you are trying to distance yourself from the term

Megatron · 20/12/2011 10:32

OP who are you actually talking to?

Chav is no better or worse than any other name calling. Name calling is ridiculous anyway but I bet pretty much every single person on this forum does it at some point, whether it's fool, chav, moron, eejit etc. I wouldn't get yourself so worked up about it to be honest.

roundcornsilkvirgin · 20/12/2011 10:33

who is your rant directed at OP Confused
I am too skint to be either a chav or M/C. I feel left out now.

pictish · 20/12/2011 10:36

I'm the same - I'm certainly not 'middle class' either. We haven't a pot to piss in - Kappa trackies and SuperDry jackets are way beyond me!

usualsuspect · 20/12/2011 10:38

I think I must be a pleb

roundcornsilkvirgin · 20/12/2011 10:38

exactly pictish. I long for the chav lifestyle

KittieCat · 20/12/2011 10:42

Xmas Grin at wherethewildthingswere

throwingcaution · 20/12/2011 10:44

Its about context , imo Chav is a mentality rather than a look,
People who look like 'chavs' are generally harassed looking mums or poor people which its cruel to belittle.

FreudianSlipper · 20/12/2011 10:45

being called middle class is not an insult. it does not imply that you are not as intelligent as others

good point nickname but it bothers me that in a day and age where we are striving to be more open minded and accepting that we are all different there still has to be a group of people that so many want to look down upon and it is acceptable to do so, call them names and mock them what is the need and what message does it give to children from these so called chav families, stay in your place you can do no better.
