chav

no i do not think i am being unreasonable to think that those who call other people chavs are idiots, why do you need to belittle in such a way does it make you feel better, make you feel more middle class, do you think it makes you appear more intelligent Hmm what little small minded world do you live in that someone calling a child a particular name or nickname immediately means to you they are chavs

really its a little pathetic

Nancy66 · 20/12/2011 10:45

if somebody asked me what i thought of the names:

Jayden
Kayleigh
Tyler
Madison

....my answer would be: chavvy.

they are - just an easy word to some them up with.

roundcornsilkvirgin · 20/12/2011 10:46

you are labelling 'them' as a distinct group though OP.

TheMaskedPan · 20/12/2011 10:50

I agree with everything corny said.

Morning corny! - long time no see.

roundcornsilkvirgin · 20/12/2011 10:51

hello there Pan. Smile I agree with me as well.
Is that your festive name change then?

TroublesomeEx · 20/12/2011 10:51

There is a family at DD's school who have achieved the full chav look. They are much better off than us! A lovely family, but I wouldn't be seen dead in their clothes and bling in a million years!!

DH's family aspire to the chav. All of them. We think they're (wannabe) chavs, they think we're stuck up. Everyone's a winner!!

For me, 'chav' is about a style of dress (maybe associated with a mentality) rather than being poor as it so often gets linked with.

FreudianSlipper · 20/12/2011 10:52

no mine is not likely to be because it is an iranan (or persian according to some same country) name that is not popular here

and i answered the question

to some i might be considered a chav, i often shop in asda, primark, single mother who has been on benefits oh and i lived on a council estate when i was very young

OP posts:
AMumInScotland · 20/12/2011 10:54

But the way you use "middle class" in your OP makes it clear you mean it as an insult! You are implying that they are smug, that they look down on others, that they are more concerned with what other people think of them than with reality.

You clearly look down on people you judge as "middle class"!

TroublesomeEx · 20/12/2011 10:54

I'm not sure I'd agree with that though, Freudian. There are plenty of people who see the term 'middle class' as an insult.

There are those who associate the term 'MC' with petit-bourgeoise which is absolutely an insult.

usualsuspect · 20/12/2011 10:55

I would be considered a chav by MN rules too

Live on a council estate ,shop in Asda wear primark and Asda clothes

children went to the local comp etc

roundcornsilkvirgin · 20/12/2011 10:56

No you're definitely a pleb usualsuspect Wink

AMumInScotland · 20/12/2011 10:56

But do you spend a fortune on the right brand of tracksuits, burberry accessories, and have an orange perma-tan? If not, I don't think anyone will label you as a chav. Many people live on council estates, are single mothers on benefits, etc, and are not seen as chavs because of it.

TroublesomeEx · 20/12/2011 10:57

Freudian - to some i might be considered a chav, i often shop in asda, primark, single mother who has been on benefits oh and i lived on a council estate when i was very young

this does not a chav make. That has also described me at one point in my life (in fact I still shop at Asda amongst other places) but no one would ever have described me as a chav!

usualsuspect · 20/12/2011 10:57

Oh but they are though ,I think thats the point the OP is trying to make

ViviPrudolf · 20/12/2011 10:58

By describing why you might be considered a chav, OP you've just proved that these are your perceptions.

I reserve the right to look down on whomsoever I choose.

thepeoplesprincess · 20/12/2011 10:58

There's far more to being a chav than shopping at Primark- I got some of my fav crushed velvet clothes from there.

True chavs revel in their own ignorance and lack of aspirations. One would assume that if either their own mentality or attitudes towards it offended them, then they'd do summat about it. Like reading a book. Or watching stuff that doesn't included a phone-in poll.

TheMaskedPan · 20/12/2011 10:59

Not festive corny, just being enigmatic (again!).

It isn't just dress or income - there is a whole load of indices that get to warrant the chav title - plasma tv wall mounted, burberry, liking X-Factor, spending a disproportionate amount of income on media/phones/gadgets, pimping your ride, no books for reading in the house, that sort of thing.

As hard as I try not to, I am afraid I do judge people who present to me as chavs, and I do like the word chavtastic.

So shoot me.

usualsuspect · 20/12/2011 11:00

But many people who live on council estates are considered to be chavs by some people just because of where they live

TheMaskedPan · 20/12/2011 11:00

usual scores in the Venn Diagram of chav and pleb intersection.SmileWell done!!

roundcornsilkvirgin · 20/12/2011 11:02

to be fair though usual, folk who think that are always twats

usualsuspect · 20/12/2011 11:02

I only have a small TV ,but I watch the X factor on it

I dunno where I fit in now

roundcornsilkvirgin · 20/12/2011 11:03

I watch x factor as well. It's all so confusing.

HairyNigel · 20/12/2011 11:06

Arf arf @ wherethewildthingswere

You dont need to shop at primark and asda to be a chav.

I met the ultimate chav once, she was heavily pregnant and looked as if she was off her face on crack. She had big cheap horrible loop earings and various gold clowns and stuff like this around her neck. My eyes were stinging from her minging cheap tracksuit and Adibas trainers, urgh she was awful, honestly.

There is no other than chav for people like that.

TheMaskedPan · 20/12/2011 11:06

But it's scoring highly on Pan's Indices of Chavness that counts, not just one or two features - I operate a very sophisticated system with a very narrow statistically-significant margin. (am I really writing this?? Hmm)

roundcornsilkvirgin · 20/12/2011 11:07

that's reassuring Pan

FreudianSlipper · 20/12/2011 11:09

but that is the point you tick off a few boxes and you are a chav you are looked down on
