Advertising a film about violence against women with a topless picture?

Is it just me but wtf is up with the posters for Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, a film that purports to deplore violence against women? They show the main female character topless (unless you count nipple jewellery as clothing) with the male character behind her, fully clothed, natch.

Ffs I walked my kids past this to see Arthur Christmas. I feel a strongly worded letter to the cinema coming on.

Is it that you don't want your children exposed to mild nudity or is there another point I've missed?

Sorry, haven't seen the advert.

Prolesworth · 19/12/2011 23:34

This blogger agrees with you

squeakytoy · 19/12/2011 23:34

Did your kids notice it, or comment on it then?

WhingingNinja · 19/12/2011 23:37

I've not seen the ad or have any knowledge of the film. Is it because they are showing the tattoo of the dragon?

otherwise in theory i agree that it is a slightly mixed message.

thisonehasalittlecar · 19/12/2011 23:39

I just think it looks like a poster for a teenage boy wank film (like Sin City or something), which however provocative an image it used, probably wouldn't be able to show total toplessness in a cinema foyer.

OP posts:
squeakytoy · 19/12/2011 23:40

but did your children get upset by it? did they even see it?

IneedAChristmasNickname · 19/12/2011 23:46

My children would probably have a giggle about the boobies, if indeed they even noticed it!

Poster.

WorraLiberty · 19/12/2011 23:48

'A teenage boy wank film'??

So I suppose by your reckoning, any poster depicting a topless man would be like a teenage girl wank film?

How very odd Confused

There are some people out there who can view topless bodies without feeling the need to masturbate you know...and some of them are even teenagers.

thisonehasalittlecar · 19/12/2011 23:57

The did see it, the posters in our cinema are all up a stair and they were examining each one as they went up. They didn't comment on it. The poster is similar to this

No I don't think they were scarred by it. Just another in the long line of exploitative pictures of women they'll see in the course of growing up. What pisses me off is my feeling that the film is somehow getting away with using a woman's body to sell tickets while pretending to be an arty film condemning sexual violence.

OP posts:
thisonehasalittlecar · 20/12/2011 00:02

worra I am seriously not a Mary Whitehouse. It is the juxtaposition of the poster with a film that is trying to position itself as an opposite to the teen boy-type film that bugs me.

OP posts:
WorraLiberty · 20/12/2011 00:07

Perhaps if you see the film you might/might not change your mind

It's hard to say by a single poster really

But you haven't commented on the fact that the man is being cast in that poster as evil and nasty looking.

One could argue that there are far more men (it seems) in films who are cast that way.

That's probably not a great 'role model situation' for boys or girls.

thisonehasalittlecar · 20/12/2011 00:12

he's not! he's the hero!

OP posts:
WorraLiberty · 20/12/2011 00:14

Ahh but a child would have to watch the film to find that out wouldn't they?

The same way they'd have to watch it to find out the woman's not a hooker

He looks (to me) as though he's fairly dark and evil and as I say, there seems to be way more men who are cast that way than women.

methsdrinker · 20/12/2011 00:16

Hi I completely in agreement with the op yanbu. The books and original film are bril. The poster is like a slap in the face to the whole ethos of what the books are about. That poster would put me off going to see it. As I have a fear that Hollywood would ruin a bril film.

thisonehasalittlecar · 20/12/2011 00:21

he's 'protecting' her. Not very well, as apparently she gets raped twice in the film.

OP posts:
WorraLiberty · 20/12/2011 00:24

See to me (and like most kids, I know nothing about this film) he looks like he's about to murder her Blush

thisonehasalittlecar · 20/12/2011 00:26

worra do you actually think that the fact that a lot of baddies in films are men is as negative an influence on our children (and all of us) as the fact that women are continually reduced to nothing more than their bodies? Really? Really?

OP posts:
IneedAChristmasNickname · 20/12/2011 00:27

I agree with Worra he doesn't look like he is protecting her in the poster. I have no idea what the book/film is about, so can only jugde on what I see. I still don't think it would bother my DC though

thisonehasalittlecar · 20/12/2011 00:30

my first yanbu. thank you meths

OP posts:
methsdrinker · 20/12/2011 00:40

My pleasure! God I love those books. I was gutted when Stieg larrson died.

GColdtimer · 20/12/2011 00:44

I was going to say yabu because I didn't even notice if the poster at our cinema had breasts on show. Seeing your example ibam actually quite shocked. There is no way Lisbeth would have allowed that photo to be taken so I fear they have completely missed the point. So I have actually changed my mind and agree with you.

GColdtimer · 20/12/2011 00:45

Another YANBU here!

TheRuderBarracuda · 20/12/2011 00:50

YANBU Op. Stieg Larrson will be turning in his grave.

Wikipedia: "Larsson witnessed the gang rape of a young girl when he was 15. He never forgave himself for failing to help the girl, whose name was Lisbeth ? like the young heroine of his books, herself a rape victim, which inspired the theme of sexual violence against women in his books."

FFS. There is just no escape is there.

Not going to see that now for sure. Loved the books. Original films meh. But this is just taking the piss innit?

NinkyNonker · 20/12/2011 08:02

Yanbu. Totally inappropriate given the circumstances the character finds herself attired Luke that in the book.
