To want to put this Christmas card in the bin?

BornSicky · 19/12/2011 18:05

hand delivered card just popped through my door, my name isn't on the envelope or in it. Fair enough... could be new neighbours.

Open card and it's from Bob and Jo (don't know them)

Also enclosed is a booklet entitled "Knowing God Personally" which tells me I'm a nasty sinner and need God and Jesus in my life to make it all better (of course I do! Hmm

The booklet is by the Agape organisation - evangelical christians.

So, AIBU to bin this card, as it's not about friendliness, being a good neighbour, or actually Christmas... it's a recruitment drive, pure and simple and that I'm afraid is not a good advert for the church imho.

yabu to put it in the bin - recycle it instead Xmas Grin

WorraLiberty · 19/12/2011 18:08

Why are you asking?

You don't know the senders so if you want to bin it...then bin it.

I get them every year and I treat them like any other junk mail.

WoTmania · 19/12/2011 18:09

YANBU - do you have any smoker friends? They might be able to use it as roach Grin

hobnobsaremyfavourite · 19/12/2011 18:10

Maybe it wasn't meant for you? You said it didn't have your name on the envelope. If it bugs you that much bin it and unclench FFS .

KittyFane · 19/12/2011 18:11

If you say so.
I am not religious but I disagree.
If reading it helps one person then it's not a bad thing altogether.
YABU in your last statement.
Just put it in the bin if you don't want it.

BornSicky · 19/12/2011 18:13

fuzzy... it would make a good gift tag!

worra i've never had anything like this before. it's handwritten, made to look personal (but isn't)

WoT yup, roach also a good idea

Lol @ 'unclench' Grin

Yes, it's no big deal is it!

Sparklingbaubles · 19/12/2011 18:16

I went to a carol concert given by the Evangelical church. Sang loudly lots of beautiful carols. Then got told we were all sinners. Sad

BornSicky · 19/12/2011 18:18

it really winds me up though,....

"dear bornsicky

have a lovely christmas... (you evil sinner, unless you join our church you're going to hell)

love bob and jo"

very charming and christian minded!

OP posts:
GypsyMoth · 19/12/2011 18:20

You are over thinking this, and sound quite irrational!

Does it actually call you an 'evil sinner'?? No? Thought not....

Sparklingbaubles · 19/12/2011 18:21

I would be a bit freaked out BornSicky. I got given lots of bumf to read and 2 DVDs that I am too scared to watch at the end of the service.

ChippingInLovesChristmasLights · 19/12/2011 18:21

Put the propaganda in the recycling - if the card is nice put it up, if it's not put it in the recycling Grin

ImperialBlether · 19/12/2011 18:23

You could send it back in a new envelope with no stamp on.

mockingjay · 19/12/2011 18:23

YANBU to be annoyed, i wouldn't appreciate it either BornSicky. It's an intrusion, rude and a little underhand as well!

soandsosmummy · 19/12/2011 18:23

YANBU. We got a lovely Christmas card from the local faiths together organisation (basically various churches, mosque, gudwara and a small synagogue) wishing us the best of the season and also saying that anyone of any faith who would be alone on Christmas day is welcome at a local church hall where Christmas dinner, music and good cheer will be available to all. It also had contact details for various faith leaders. I've put it up with all the others as I think its a lovely message and sentiment.

BornSicky · 19/12/2011 18:25

yup... it does pretty much:

" we are all guilty before god and will be judged for our sin. the punishment for this sin is eternal separation from god. this is what the bible calls hell."

baubles i'll bin mine if you bin yours?! Wink

ViviPrudolf · 19/12/2011 18:25

Unclench. That's going to be my festive mantra.

Fuzzywuzzywozabear · 19/12/2011 18:25

We get one of those every year. Previously, if I got to it first I used to write DS1's name on it - had him going for years that they knew his name and wanted him for a sunbeam pmsl

SantasStrapon · 19/12/2011 18:27

Brilliant Fuzzy, I bow to your evil genius ways.

Ephiny · 19/12/2011 18:29

I don't see what you're getting so upset about. Yes it's obviously advertising/recruitment for their church - if you're not interested then just ignore/bin.

Sparklingbaubles · 19/12/2011 18:29

Shall I watch the DVDs first BornSicky? They are on the hall table scaring me at the moment. Sad

BaronessBomburst · 19/12/2011 18:33

I've just told DH and he's getting quite cross with them on your behalf - he's actually started to rant!

BTW eternal separation from god seems ideal to me. Grin

BerthaTheBogBurglar · 19/12/2011 18:40

Do you get this cross about all the other junk mail you receive? Bin it, if it makes you feel better.

It is "christian minded" though, what they've done. Christians are supposed to tell other people about Jesus. And they were also being a "good neighbour" (using Jesus' definition, and he coined the phrase), and yes, this is also about Christmas, of course a leaflet about Jesus is about Christmas ... [BerthaTheBogPedant]

Why is it not a good advert for the church? It explains the entry criteria, doesn't it? I mean ok, it didn't make you want to join the church, and so was not an effective advert. But at least it isn't misrepresenting the church. After all, the church exists to explain to people that they are sinners and need Jesus, doesn't it? What would you have liked an advert for the church to say? "You're not a sinner and Jesus won't help you, Merry Christmas"?

Sparklingbaubles · 19/12/2011 18:49

I can't complain because I chose to go to the service. It was lovely, I didn't understand or agree with everything that was said, but I was in awe of how into it they all were and obviously enjoy it hugely.
