Everyone looks at their iPod and feel proud that they have a bit of classical, bit of country, bit of metal, bit of folk, bit of indie .... SNORE

I, however, definitely DO have eclectic taste in music.

I listen to Coldplay AND to U2.
I listen to Duran Duran AND to Spandau Ballet.
I listen to Robbie Williams AND to George Michael.
I listen to Madonna AND to Lady GaGa.

Not only that, but I've got a Best of Johnny Cash and also an Eminem album.

None of you have my range.

Anyone willing to admit they DON'T have eclectic tastes in music?

My DH has a cd with old tunes from the likes of Sharpe, you know, those sort of marching/after the battle tunes that kept the soldiers going. I think he also has some sea shanties somewhere. And a Belinda Carlisle album...Blush

Me
Pink
Phil Collins
Eminem
Mozart
Melody Gardot
Metronomy
Rage Against The Machine
Nat King Cole
Extreme

BalloonSlayer · 18/12/2011 10:19

My entire music collection could consist of a combination of those "The Best xxxx album in the world EVER" CDs.

An eclectic combination, of course Wink

WTAF · 18/12/2011 10:24

Roy Walker didn't say 'the clues are there', that was Sir David Frost, as in '...and remember, the clues are there, as we go through...the keyhole!' Roy said 'say what you see!'

Ahem. I wouldn't say my taste is eclectic. I likes what I likes. I tend to just download individual songs nowadays, rather than albums. I have a short attention span. I am forced to listen to Sharky and Bones almost constantly in the car, but that's fine, they are legends! Can You Talk Like a Pirate is a classic.

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 18/12/2011 10:25

err
I have
Spem in Alium by Thomas Tallis (a motet for 40 voices - v beautiful c.1570)
and
Anarchy in the UK by the Sex Pistols
on my playlist

Eclectic enough! Xmas Wink

My i-pod has various songs from Eurovision runners up (get that OP, not even winners because they are too mainstream, no Bucks Fizz for me, I've got Scooch and Hanna Pakarinen) alongside the theme tune from Ghostbusters, a few hits by Dolly Parton, some bits of classical, The Smiths, Timothy Bracy, Tim Easton, Kasey Chambers (from before the sopranos), Simon and Garfunkel, Frank Sinatra, The Red Hot Chilli Peppers, the Juno Soundtrack, The Pogues, The Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britian and...and...AND...Kermit's Nephew Robin singing Halfway Down The Stairs. Amongst much, much more, all of it wide and varied.

So I win Grin

gamerwidow · 18/12/2011 11:06

I have the most eclectic iPod containing both Kylie and Dannii Minogue so I win!

KittyFane · 18/12/2011 12:28

NoOnes that's just random.

KittyFane · 18/12/2011 12:28

:o

Bunbaker · 18/12/2011 12:30

That isn't exactly eclectic. What about classical, folk, jazz or country music?

I like pop, rock, some jazz, some country, some folk, opera and classical.

I loathe rap and don't care for heavy metal.

KarenMillenCoat · 18/12/2011 12:34

My husband only listens to dreary I'm-so-cool-and-original Radio One bands. When hearing a new song for the first time I can tell after the first few bars whether or not he'll be a fan. All so samey and dull.

ViviPrudolf · 18/12/2011 12:35

Concedes to WTAF' superior gameshow knowledge.

And TurkeyBurger would it be too late to place an online order for a mince pie-filled-glittery-snow coverd fuckio to arrive in time for Christmas? That sounds like just the gift for the MiL.

dawntigga · 18/12/2011 12:50

ITYF if you listen to Coldplay your taste in music is actually shit not eclectic.

Xmas Grin

Caruso, Domingo and various entire operas, AC/DC, Pink Floyd, Whitesnake, Robbie Williams, Westlife, Rebecca Ferguson, The Cars, Alabama, Jace Everett, John Denver, Elmore James, Seal, Rolling Stones, Hildegard Bingham (not personally!), Buddhist Temple music, Gregorian chants, various Cathedral choirs, Charlie Parker, Miles Davis, Elvis, Steeleye Span, Jethro Tull....pretty eclectic but no house, garage or other domicile related music and no Rap

ViviPrudolf · 18/12/2011 12:57

Domicile related music! Arf! Love that, TR.

I'm going to use this term to refer to that section of my music collection henceforth.

Takeresponsibility · 18/12/2011 12:58

Chaz - Have just googled "Spem in Alium by Thomas Tallis" and played it on You Tube, beautiful damn you now I'll have to buy that too.

Thank you

quirrelquarrel · 18/12/2011 12:59

Oh yes- "I'm so electic, apart from rap and country, classical (what? so baroque's in, then?)...what? Oh, the Stones...don't really listen to rock much either". Etc etc until you have Lady Gaga, Michael Buble and their ilk (don't get to use that word enough).

I'm not electic at all. I only listen to a few groups/people. The Beatles, Delibes, Debussy, Simon and Garfunkel, Kate Bush, ELO, Bowie.
Quite like The Police, used to be obsessed with the 60s and don't cringe at Hanson...:o

quirrelquarrel · 18/12/2011 12:59
  • eclectic
LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 18/12/2011 13:03

I think that if you have to 'say' that you have eclectic taste, you really don't. It's middle of the road and/or embarrassing and you're trying to cover it up by giving it a label. These are the same people that refer to themselves as 'crazy'... cringeworthy... Grin

It's like nicknames - you don't give yourself a nickname, others give it to you. They 'bestow' on you the label of 'ecletic' music taste, you don't give it to yourself.

... unless you have Alvin and the Chipmunks and Scooter together on a compilation of course. Xmas Wink

quirrelquarrel · 18/12/2011 13:24

^ Yes, exactly!
Oh the release of the internet...giving yourself a nickname Hmm

BelfastRingingOutForXmasBloke · 18/12/2011 20:35

Sorry I was away for the day.

LOVED the debate about whether I was joking or not.

I forgot to tell you I also have some black people's music: Michael Jackson's Thriller.

Now That's What I Call Eclecticism.

OP posts:
bethelbeth · 18/12/2011 20:40

Charming.

ViviPrudolf · 18/12/2011 20:43

OP you're like my friend Chris. No one can ever work out if he is joking or not. He maintains that this is due to the sublime subtlety of his wit. We think it's more due to poor delivery and the fact that it is feasible that the stupid things he says could actually be what he thinks...

bethelbeth · 18/12/2011 20:46

So, like the Daily Mail then ?

JarethTheGoblinKing · 18/12/2011 20:49

I wish more people knew what eclectic meant.. lots of people seem to think it's a style of music Xmas Grin

debka · 18/12/2011 20:49

I don't have an ipod and I don't actually like music much at all. In fact I have been known to switch the radio/stereo off at other people's houses. What is the point of it?
