To ask people not to smoke in the playground?

I was in the playground with DS, when a young couple came in, tied their dog up outside, sat on the swings and lit up. They didn't have a child with them and there are plenty of benches outside the playground they could have used.
I know it's not illegal to smoke in a kids playground but I'm PMT'ish and INO it should be.
They called me a fat bitch ( apt description BTW ;)) but did move on. Grin

YABU

LineRunnerCrouchingReindeer · 15/12/2011 14:24

I think it is illegal now. It's a workplace.

LineRunnerCrouchingReindeer · 15/12/2011 14:25

Sorry I'm knackered and weary and I thought 'school playground'!

DoesNotGiveAFig · 15/12/2011 14:25

It's not a place I'd smoke in...I wouldn't smoke around Cs anyway.

Olderyetwilder · 15/12/2011 14:26

It's not unreasonable to smoke outside.

SHoHoHodan · 15/12/2011 14:27

I would've looked askance at them too, tbh.

And I'm a Nasty Smoker.

They are unreasonable to be smoking on the kids swings really. Smoking outside is fair enough but use the park benches. Why adults want to use childrens play equipment for their smoking break is beyond me. Really what is needed is an age 12 and under sign on the play equipment. Although I doubt this would deter them.

TheRuderBarracuda · 15/12/2011 14:29

Playgrounds round our way have no smoking signs on the entrance (I'm a nasty smoker too but would have been irked) YANBU

GypsyMoth · 15/12/2011 14:29

Natasha....school??

SaraBellumHertz · 15/12/2011 14:29

Not unreasonable. Smoking round children is grim.

HeidiKat · 15/12/2011 14:29

I probably wouldn't have said anything about the smoking, it was outdoors after all, but would have waited to see if they put the butts in an appropriate bin and told them off for littering the playground if not.

DoesNotGiveAFig · 15/12/2011 14:29

I am a smoker, but smoking in a kids playground isn't on.

StaceymAloneForver · 15/12/2011 14:30

haha ithought school playground, i never used to smoke in the playground even when my kids were in there, i would stand outside the fence, don;t smoke anymroe though Grin wayhey!

ChooChooWowWow · 15/12/2011 14:30

YANBU

madangelhairday · 15/12/2011 14:31

YANBU

I don't think it's illegal as it's outdoors but inside a play area doesn't seem fair really as there's usually plenty of room outside it.

thepeoplesprincess · 15/12/2011 14:32

I smoke when I'm in the park with the kids, but I wouldn't go there on my own specifically to have a fag. That's just odd.

FiveHoursSleep · 15/12/2011 14:33

Sorry, not a school playground, just a council one. I left them alone while they were on the big swings on the other side of the playground, but when they came over to the baby swings next to us and mucked about trying to squeeze into them while wave smoke in our faces, I got pissed off!

There's outside and there's outside, though. Why walk into a kids playground to light up? Just because it's legal doesn't mean it's not skanky.

fuzzynavel · 15/12/2011 14:38

Now you have explained it a bit more I change my mind YANBU

IReallyHateMyCat · 15/12/2011 15:01

YANBU especially as not enough people take their butss with them.. Just leave them in the sand

MamaLazarou · 15/12/2011 15:04

YABU. It's not particularly pleasant, but it doesn't do any harm.

They are BU to hang out in a kids' playground, though!

MollyTheMole · 15/12/2011 16:09

YABU its not nice but being next to a ghastly smoker for about 3 mins kill your DCs either.

I wouldnt, because I dont smoke and I just wouldnt do it either, but if you had asked me you'd have been met with a Xmas Hmm and possibly a guffaw or two

slavetofilofax · 15/12/2011 16:26

I smoke and I wouldn't smoke in a childrens playground. Not because I think it would do any children any harm, but because I wouldn't want to be judged as a chav.

MabelLucyAttwell · 15/12/2011 16:32

It's not just smokers. Our local children's play area is fenced in from the grassed area and dogs are not supposed to go into it. I was there some time ago with two grandchildren and asked a couple of youngsters to take their dog out to the grassed area. I asked politely and they did take their nice looking spaniel out. It was a matter of principle.

I also ask people to take their feet off seats when I'm on a bus (it's always at the back where the driver can't see them).
