to wonder why DS1's aceivement did not merit a mention in the school newsletter?

DS1 is in yr 10. He's an OK student but never going to set the world on fire academically. But well-behaved and happy. But in the last few years he has started to really enjoy music - he is already getting grade A marks for much of his work. At the end of last year he and his band performed in a competition in school. They won by a huge margin - they were pretty amazing even though I say it myself and even the music teacher was impressed. Their 'prize' was a chance to record some music at the college. And to perform their song again during the Yr9 awards ceremony

Now the head is a wonderful HT. Very dedicated and enthusiastic. But a little old-fashioned. She didn't turn up to listen to the competition until the last 20 mins or so and was very cat-bum-mouthed the entire time. She also told the pupils 'to show their appreciation by clapping in the normal manner' because she didn't like them standing up and cheering etc. I don't think she's a fan Grin

Anyway upshot of this was that the band didn't get to peform at the awards ceremony - vetoed by head. And the competition and the fact they are set to record at the college after christmas has not featured in any of the newsletters since then, and didn't even merit a mention in the 'review of the year' that we received yesterday. And considering that generally you only have to fart in an interesting manner to get into the newsletters normally Grin that is a big oversight IMO.

AIBU to think that this a poor show and that the band should peform on the corridor outside her office until she deigns to notice them?

yanbu

BuntyPenfold · 15/12/2011 10:47

Yes, well, maybe...if it is really an oversight.
I wonder if the lyrics were a bit non pc or something, that might justify the cats bum face?

AKMD · 15/12/2011 10:48

YANBU - your HT sounds a bit weird. Did she only want classical music played at the competition? Confused

OrmIrian · 15/12/2011 10:48

Hmm... don't think it could be that. I am not sure anyone could actually hear the lyrics Grin DS's voice isn't that strong.

Anyway it was Blur's Song 2 - Idon't think it's unPC;

Agreed, you absolutely right

DeeOfTheNorthPole · 15/12/2011 10:49

YANBU. What a shame that they're not being recognised in school - I do feel bad for you and you DS.

However if the old-fashioned did really like them then odd are their peers wouldn't! Your DS's band is obviously far too cool for the establishment...! Xmas Grin

DeeOfTheNorthPole · 15/12/2011 10:50

old-fashioned HT

OrmIrian · 15/12/2011 10:50

AKMD - it was a 'pop competition' so I suspect she knew what to expect. But yes I am sure she'd have prefered a little light chamber music (as would I to be honest but I was still so proud of him!)

Sadly she may be a bit of a misery then; shame for your DS though.
Well done him for livening up the end of term.

Very odd if she knew what she was letting herself in for! what a misery-guts to change the rules afterwards :(

PeelThemWithTheirMithrasKnives · 15/12/2011 10:57

YANBU.

Your DS sounds v cool!

happychappy · 15/12/2011 10:59

My dd did her alevel italian at 12 and got an a*. It wasn't mentioned until last month she's now nearly 14 (she got a cup for student of the month). But in that month she also got 50 house points for other things, a ton of other praise points and then her certificate. Its seems the head of year teachers don't really see everything that goes on in the school. And the praise is given on a completely subjective point of view. DD got a new head of year this year so perhaps that why it was mentioned this year.
Yes I am a v.proud mum

"My dd did her alevel italian at 12 and got an a*. "

LOL happychappy - that's put DS in his place Grin

Wow!

I did also say I was a very proud mum, so apologies for boasting but she did do really well and I was also miffed at the school when nothing was said last year. But she also knew she had done v.well and was enormously embarrassed and walking around with a cup for a day.

MabelLucyAttwell · 15/12/2011 16:34

Was the band representing the school?

lisaro · 15/12/2011 16:46

YANBU - the head is. Loved the 'fart in an interesting manner' comment. I will steal that if I may.

tigermoll · 15/12/2011 16:55

Look, if the band is to have any cred whatsoever, then one of the bandmember's mums lobbying to have the school mention it in the newsletter is a no-no.

Try to see it as a cool, counterculture, people's heroes type band. Not one that the Head likes Smile

OrmIrian · 15/12/2011 16:58

tiger - I can assure you I won't be lobbying the school! DS would leave home.

mabel - nope not representing the school apart from when they do their recording I guess.
