You shouldnt be made to take it as a days holiday? Especially as I havent got any holiday left this next year so they have taken a day off me for next year??? How does that work when it wasnt bloody holiday and I spent it cleaning up puke for most of the day!! Am I being a bit oversensitive???

Ask to have it as unpaid leave instead.

squeakytoy · 14/12/2011 13:38

But you also shouldnt be paid for it either, so by allowing you to have it as a paid holiday, your employer is doing you a favour.

You cant expect to be paid surely?

hwjm1945 · 14/12/2011 13:38

Well, you are supposed to present yourself at work, do a day's work adn then get paid.If you were not there and had ot look after your child, you are not at work are you? Tough but trueI am afraid.

JingleBellsTootaSmells · 14/12/2011 13:39

It sucks but I'm not sure what you can do about it? Work just calls it 'holiday', it doesn't matter if you're sunning it up in Majorca or wiping up puke, the point from their end is that you are not in work.

Hope your dc feels better soon.

Alibabaandthe80nappies · 14/12/2011 13:39

You can either take it as paid holiday, or unpaid leave.

Clownsarescary · 14/12/2011 13:39

Cute what is the childcare policy at your work?

GypsyMoth · 14/12/2011 13:40

Get someone else to look after him? His dad?

You can't expect to be paid surely?!

lettingitallgonow · 14/12/2011 13:40

don't employers now have to give employee's a set number of 'family care days' for exactly that sort of thing? I know my company give us 3 days (but only if you need them) to look after sick children or if the childminder goes awol.

wannaBe · 14/12/2011 13:41

of course yabu. your childcare issues are not your employer's concern.

Grumpla · 14/12/2011 13:41

If you've worked there for a year you are entitled to up to six weeks (I think?) unpaid parental leave. They should have taken it out of that rather than next year's holiday.

A1980 · 14/12/2011 13:41

YABU beyond belief.

Sick leave is for when you are sick, nobody else.

If you don't want your holiday deducted ask to take it as unpaid.

hwjm1945 · 14/12/2011 13:41

i know some unscrupulous people say they themselves are ill, thus getting sick pay for that day

bluegnueboo · 14/12/2011 13:41

Is there no option for carers leave?

kdiddy · 14/12/2011 13:42

Well, holiday is just essentially paid time off work with permission from your employer, which is what you've had.

It might feel rubbish to have to use it for things that aren't much fun, but I think you are being a bit sensitive - your work won't have wanted you to be off either and they've made it possible for you to do what you needed to do at short notice.

Unless you wanted it unpaid, but they might have thought they were being nice to you by giving paid holiday?

Wiseoldself · 14/12/2011 13:42

So your employer should pay for you to be off with your child??! Your child your respsonsibility and you have to suck it up I'm afraid.

I have three DC and have always used leave when they are ill, you need to make sure you have a day or two left at the end of the year just in case this happens, be a bit more organised. Or take unpaid leave.

squeakytoy · 14/12/2011 13:42

If you've worked there for a year you are entitled to up to six weeks (I think?) unpaid parental leave.

Really?????? I have never heard of that before.

cuteboots · 14/12/2011 13:43

Im just being a bit Grrr today and need chocolate I think!! I dont expect to be paid and was defintely clearing up puke not my own all day! GRRRRR. I dont have anyone else that can help unfortunately.

At my work your options are take annual leave, take unpaid leave or make up your hours. Its a pain that your dc is sick and you have no hours left but that isn't your works fault.

Can you ask to take it as unpaid leave?

PinsAndNoodles · 14/12/2011 13:45

I work for the NHS. We are allowed to take up to 3 days carer's leave a year.

Alibabaandthe80nappies · 14/12/2011 13:45

I don't see what the puke clearing has to do with it, really.

But if you don't want to be paid then why not just e-mail HR or payroll or whoever and ask if you can take it as unpaid leave, and leave next year's holiday allowance intact?

sherbetpips · 14/12/2011 13:46

By law you are entitled to up to 6 weeks unpaid leave without it affecting your employment record. (yeh right).
Either way they should have given you the option to take it unpaid. It is actually quite nice of them to give you an option to take one of your paid days from next year, we don't get that.

mollymole · 14/12/2011 13:46

Cuteboots
Please come back and tell us how you wanted the day to be treated.
You are not sick yourself, but your child is, as I understand your post.
As an employer you would have had 2 options with our company, either take a days paid leave or take a days unpaid leave, end off.

lettingitallgonow · 14/12/2011 13:47

We can take up to 3 'family care days' a year to look after sick children or if the childminder goes awol etc.

I'm sure I read somewhere that it's now a legal requirement that employees offer this, but I might be wrong.

cuteboots · 14/12/2011 14:00
