AIBU Re Train Seats

Last night one train, the one I normally get, didn't show. It was cancelled due to a fault. Myself and approximately 10 other people had to stand around for an hour until the next train. During this time, the platform got very very busy, as you can imagine (people waiting for the next train)

Finally the train arrives. I climb aboard and, like the 25 or so other people, tried to find a seat. I finally found a seat, but it meant politely asking an elderly gentleman to move up so that I can sit next to him. His response? "No. I was here first" I thought he was joking at first, so I smiled and waited for him to move. He said "What are you waiting for? I told you I'm not moving"

I ended up standing for the 1 hour journey.

AIBU to expect somebody to move up to make room for somebody? This was one of those 2 seats (like on a bus) and he was sitting on the seat nearest the aisle not the window.

Dexter, he didn't make anyone stand, it was a coach, no one stands on a coach! He certainly had paid for two seats and why shouldn't he have the seat next to him as "his" other seat? It would only be next to someone else otherwise.

AlexTasha, as I've said before I use crutches, I'm currently sitting on my bed cross legged and it's not unusual for me to have my phone in my hand either texting or FBing. Want to tell me I'm not disabled?

confuddledDOTcom · 15/12/2011 02:38

I've had it quite often that the only two seats spare are facing each other at a table seat and people have made my daughter at 3 and 4 sit away from me so that they can look at their friend and chat! As I had my younger daughter too I couldn't sit her on my lap.

Mabel, did you miss the point where she'd reserved the seats? I think I missed the point where she turned away pregnant, disabled and elderly people though!

TheHumancatapult · 15/12/2011 03:30

alex lol i can cross my legs and sgock i can even type , test and use a laptop and theres no doubt im disabled Grin

see first western i could have kissed the transport police who was helping at station as lots of delays and cross tempers .Who when i could not get on my pre booked train or the next 2 ones as was full and people would not move cases or themselves .He got on the train and said you have 5 minutes to move your luggage out of the wheelchair space .Or you will find it on the platform with or without you Grin and he did actually start moving them off .

MixedUpKitty · 15/12/2011 11:20

Mabel - when I was pregnant I wouldn't have expected anyone with kids to squash up for me - I'd have hoped one of the apparently able bodied people who make up the majority of passengers would move!

I recently travelled from Liverpool to London to visit family. It was me and my newborn, we were going for 5 days so I did have a bag of stuff with me. Luckily, none of the 4 trains I had to get were busy so I was able to have my bag on the seat next to me, otherwise I don't know what I would've done. I had the baby in a pram, and the bag was too big and heavy to get on the overhead racks which are the only ones on London Midland trains.

Having said that I would never take up a space needed by a person with my bag! That is just rude. and Lottie you were very rude not to give up a space that was reserved just because the reservation system wasn't on. If she had a ticket proving it they why should she have to stand and not you?

Reminds me also of using the train when 30 weeks pregnant with twins. Got on a very busy bus, got practically the last seat. I was the only that allowed a disabled man to sit (he was on crutches) so had to stand. I did very loudly exclaim about it was strange how only the heavily pregnant woman would get up for him and we had a loud conversation about it.

No one else got up though.

Oh, and that link with Keanu has reignited my teenage love affair with him.

NinkyNonker · 15/12/2011 12:08

She didn't have proof she had reserved that seat was my understanding, and I think Alex was quite obviously being sarky about comments she had been on the receiving end of.

LadyClariceCannockMonty · 15/12/2011 13:39

In that situation the correct form is to shove past the fucker sitter (whether you present arse or groin is a decision to be made on a case-by-case basis) and, if possible, stand all over their feet too, especially if you're wearing thin sharp heels.

And I ALWAYS make a beeline for the selfish twunts with their bags on the seat next to them and ask them, with patented tube/bus expressionless face, to excuse me please.

All vrey nice, but OP didn't ask if she could get past to the window seat, she asked him to move over so she could sit in the aisle seat.

My DB use to live in a reidential care home in Wales.... they would all arrive/depart from paddington - ALWAYS HAD reserved seats (there were usally about 10-30 people traverling) ALWAYS had to eject people from there seats ALWAYS!!!! most were not happy about it!!! Once there were a group of 6 traniee nurses - all blond... we asked them to move as all seats had been reserved...etc They happily did move an in fact there were a few no shows for the trip back so the blonds all sat at my brothers table we warned them about his non stop chatter Found out from staff they were all lovley girls who happily chatted, played games and took an interest in the residents or what ever the pc term is today BEST 5 hours of his life ;-)

LadyClariceCannockMonty · 15/12/2011 14:08

bruffin I think anyone who was not deliberately misunderstanding would know that what the OP meant by 'Can you move up' was more along the lines of 'Could I sit down on one of these seats please ? if you'd rather keep the aisle seat than move, could you possibly stand/lean your legs to the side to let me in to the window seat?' but obviously no one actually says that.

Yes, the OP could have responded with 'OK then, please could I squeeze past to the window seat?' but the man in the aisle seat sounded so unpleasant that I'm not surprised if she was too taken aback to do so.

bruffin · 15/12/2011 14:14

Well she hasn't come back to explain herself has she!

LadyClariceCannockMonty · 15/12/2011 14:20

I don't think she really needs to 'explain herself, tbh.

Bah humbug just lost a long post!

What comments had Alex been on the receiving end of? She's only posted once on this thread.

This reminds me of something, wasn't on a train but similar track (no pun intended).

I was in a very long queue on a very hot day and very pregnant carrying my lovely metal fashion accessories waiting to get into somewhere. There was a member of staff walking around the queue making sure everyone was OK. She stopped at me and we had a chat because she was also pregnant, not as far gone and was saying how she was struggling with the heat and she wasn't having to queue. She asked a few times if I was OK and pulled a Xmas Hmm (although a nice one) and eventually walked away.

Lady in front of us, about 60s, no obvious sign of mobility issues (not that it has to be obvious but she had the chance to say something if she needed) turned around and said "I thought she was going to let you jump the queue then. You're not the only one pregnant you know!" Ah... pregnancy... the miracle cure all!

A few minutes later a paramedic crew Xmas Blush came and pulled us out of the queue and escorted us inside and found me somewhere to sit.

I'm going into town on a bus in an hour's time and will be coming home on a bus. I will be watching out for incidents! .
