I've got a cough and dh is complaining at me for coughing and has now gone to sit in another room as it's too annoying for him

Ive got a cough so sometimes I erm cough. Dh was whining saying it was annoying and had I taken medicine. I can't have any more now as it's too close to bedtime so I want to save the dose for night time or else he'll complain even more at me if god forbid I dare to cough in the night.

He's now gone off to sit elsewhere as my coughing is annoying him. Aibu to expect to not be criticised when I can't help coughing?

YANBU, cough in his cup of tea or coffee and hope he catches it.

FourEyesGood · 09/12/2011 21:35

YANBU but I get really annoyed when my DH is ill and sniffs/coughs/mentions his illness. You can't help having a cough, but he can't help being annoyed by the noise.

Catsmamma · 09/12/2011 21:37

it does depend on the cough to be fair

I could quite cheerfully stab dh when he has a cough...it's like a barking trumpeting revving engine seal noise and very "oh poor me i have a cough" cough cough

Try sipping warm water that WILL help and bear in mind the more you cough the more you aggravate the throat causing more coughing.

...and hope you feel better soon

tanfastic · 09/12/2011 21:38

YANBU but when I have a cough I sleep in the spare room so I can cough to my heart's content. I recently had a cold and dh complained that I was sniffing. It pissed me off so I hear you!

squeakytoy · 09/12/2011 21:39

When I was coughing, the chemist advised me to take an anti-histamine as that dries the nose up, and stops the irritation in the throat, and it really did work too.

But YANBU, it isnt as if you are doing it for fun.

nicknamealreadyinuse · 09/12/2011 21:40

Off to boil kettle to fling water over dh make herbal tea to soothe throat. It's a thickly rather than hacking cough. He has a track record in that if I have a cold he normally chucks me out of our room so I have to sleep in the spare room.

Slather some vicks vaporub (or equivalent) on the soles of your feet, then put some socks on. Your cough will stop enough for you to sleep and not annoy your DH.

Our DD is off to bed with her 'special' cream on her feet, she hasn't coughed since I did it.

Tickly not thickly bloody spellcheck thing

Is the cough a virus/cold related cough?

He's being a prick but I guess it gets grating, but he shouldn't say anything as its clearly not your fault and temporary.

Codeine is an excellent cough suppressant (not for him, but for night time) so paracodal (over the counter - don't take it for more than 3 days or you will become a heroin addict!) and Benelyn Dry Coughs original (over the counter, not the poxy shop floor version of benelyn) which has 2 things - a very effective cough suppressant who's name I can't be arsed to google, and diphenhydramine, the "sedative" bit of "medised" (which happens to be an antihistamine, mentioned above) which will make you well sleepy if you aren't used to it or haven't had it much.

If you have a chronic cough (probably not but if anyone does) make sure you don't have athsma or GORD/GERD (reflux) both of which can be the cause of a chronic cough.

I assume its a virus.

Sympathies, had pneumonia last Xmas it went on forever and DH didn't moan once so yeah. Not your fault! Less pleasant for you than him to be fair!

ExitPursuedBySanta · 09/12/2011 21:43

I think YAB a bit U. When DH has a cough it really pisses me off, in a totally unreasonable way. Try a spoonful of honey.

Catsmamma · 09/12/2011 21:44

go to bed first and tell him to sleep in the spare room. Any stem ginger in the house?? Some of that and a teaspoon of the syrup is soothing.

nicknamealreadyinuse · 09/12/2011 21:47

Spare room taken at the moment so not an option. Darn wish I had that version of benylin. Will get some tomorrow for sat night.

Try a teaspoon of honey, it is helping mine or glycerin and honey mixture also good . I am not allowed cough medicine being 29 weeks pregnant so have to rely on this and sleeping sitting up. Also sitting over steam bowl, or in a steamy bathroom good too.

littlesaintnicola · 09/12/2011 22:04

Ear plugs -for DH that is -are the way to prevent yourself being strangled in the night a good nights sleep

squeakytoy · 09/12/2011 22:07

I took the Benilyn too (the drowsy one so it would help me sleep) and that worked quite well, but it does taste vile.

marriedandwreathedinholly · 09/12/2011 22:08

My DH is like this. I generally tell him he will miss it when I'm gone. I blame his mother - she wasn't exactly sympathetic when her children were ill.

nicknamealreadyinuse · 10/12/2011 18:08

Special Benilyn just bought ready for tonight. Have barely coughed all day but last night was a lot.
Dh wasn't actually that mean about it for once although he did end up in ds bed instead for a while when I was coughing really badly!!

Oh my exdh used to get annoyed with me coughing if I was ill. I was always far happier for him to just piss off out of my way and let me cough in peace. Enjoy it!

Bunbaker · 10/12/2011 18:12

"YANBU but I get really annoyed when my DH is ill and sniffs/coughs/mentions his illness. You can't help having a cough, but he can't help being annoyed by the noise."

I agree. When OH has a cough I can't hear the TV or sleep, so one of us goes into the spare room. I hope you feel better soon.

nerfmum · 10/12/2011 18:20

ugh DH often coughs in my face when sleeping next to me. I wish we had a spare room to kick him into.

EauDeLaPoisson · 10/12/2011 18:23

You cant help it but a cough is a really annoying noise and it is like nails down a blackboard to me. My DH has a terrible smokers cough the idiot and I could punch him at times listening to hack hack hack all night.

Bunbaker · 10/12/2011 18:25

"My DH has a terrible smokers cough the idiot and I could punch him at times listening to hack hack hack all night."

Has he seen a doctor about this? It doesn't sound good.

EauDeLaPoisson · 11/12/2011 15:45

Yes he has had chest xrays and they are clear he's just an annoying cougher grrr

NettoHoHoHoSuperstar · 11/12/2011 15:51

DD moans at me coughing.
I have brittle asthma and cough/wheeze loudly a lot.
She's not being mean really, but it must be annoying for her, hell, the noise of the wheezing wakes me up!
