Well do they?

Do you judge children's parents based on what they do to their kids hair?

Assuming that it's the parents choice rather than the child's when they're very young (

Maypole - The first thing about Afro hair is you cannot wash it every day it will dry out and brake

Not true at all.

DamnBamboo · 08/12/2011 21:43

Tigress, my childs hair is not my choice though.
DH fucked up.
He was banished from the house and was very pleased with this went to the pub.

Have never, ever had his hair this short and he's so gorgeous (sorry, he's my PFB but he really is a stunner) that he still looks good, but it's the whole 'message' that shaved heads send.

I will never ever let him near my boys with clippers again.

All I can say is you tube or I would try when your out if yur brave enough if you see a black lady or women who has mixed raced children whose hair looks nice ask them if they would be able to give you some lessons

Hopefully you know someone is their know one were you live grandparents who could help

troisgarcons · 08/12/2011 21:46

maybe corn plaits rather than dreads? ( I love corn plaits)

coldwed · 08/12/2011 21:47

I'm a white mum with mixed race girls.
I get quite paranoid at what other mums (especially black mums) think about my DDs hair.
I do comb it, oil it (Lusters pink hair lotion), and only wash it once per week (Dark and Lovely shampoo and conditioner) but their hair can look quite messy and the oil ends up looking really greasy sometimes.
Do you have any tips maypole ? My town has no afro hair salons.

Try Carol's Daughter products (online)
Pure Almond oil (a little) will keep hair moisturised without the greasy feel.
co-wash (washing hair with conditioner one day, another day, shampoo and conditioner, and so on.

Braids keep hair looking neat. Plenty of youtube videos on how to braid.

madmomma · 08/12/2011 21:47

Oh God I hope not. I've just given my beautiful 13 month old boy the most vile haircut. He looks like he's going bald the poor sod Sad I think I have no option but to get the clippers out and start again.Blush

coldwed · 08/12/2011 21:51

Do people still say dreads? I thought the correct word was locs? dread=dreadful?

maypole1 · 08/12/2011 21:52

tripletmom.hubpages.com/hub/how-to-take-care-of-curly-hair_

Washing Afro hair often can damage it unless it's very eurpean the hair will end up breaking off
If yur childs hair is very afro more like a black womens hair do not wash it every day

Try the pretty and silky followed by the beautiful beginnings I put the link on page 2 or 3 I think

Agree with coldwed Cain row is very good option

I am a black mum with a mixed raced daughter

Kladdkaka · 08/12/2011 21:53

That explains why nobody ever spoke to me in the playground. My daughter always looked like she'd been dragged through a hedge and was fond of hacking great chunks out of her hair at random intervals. She also used to itch all the time and people were forever complaining about her having nits. No she didn't. She's autistic and she's stimming.

She's 18 now and half is dyed blue, half purple and the tips black.

OhDoAdmitMrsDeVere · 08/12/2011 21:53

I used to braid my DD's hair but it wouldnt last a week. Her hair was too soft to hold braids neatly for that long. I would get a couple of days at the most.

I used to braid my DS1's as well. It was common in the early 90s where I lived. You dont tend to see so much now and people get all confused and think boys with plaited hair are girls.

I think its really trial and error trying to find the right product for mixed hair. The most important thing is to keep it moisturised I think. I have found that a Tangle Teaser is a Godsend and I wish they had been around when DD and DS1 were little. For very curly hair they are only good for 'brushing out' before washing but for DS3 its great for daily brushing.

I am not keen on detangling sprays because I find they coat the hair and leave it a bit sticky but if anyone knows of a good one I am willing to give it a try.

Its old fashioned but I find Vitapoint excellent. It comes in tiny tubes but a little goes a long way.

maypole1 · 08/12/2011 21:53

coldwed yes they do

You can have natty dreads or funky dreads

Kladdkaka · 08/12/2011 21:54

... and she still itches all the time.

OhDoAdmitMrsDeVere · 08/12/2011 21:55

dreadful Confused

never heard it in that context.

If dreads was good enough for Mr Marley its good enough for me.

BourbonSprouts · 08/12/2011 21:55

Thanks for the suggestions.
I am totally useless at hair including my own. I have really practiced braiding hair but it's hopeless. Grin
I will buy a cap for swimming. I currently just rinse and condition after swimming.
In my town I can only buy whatever Boots stocks which is the products I've mentioned. I have looked online but it's a bit of a minefield!
DD2s hair is this big upward standing unruly bundle of fun!

whackamole · 08/12/2011 21:56

Couldn't care less unless they have a mullet or obviously dyed/straightened/permed hair and are under 10.

My boys have run the gamut from long blond curls to number 2 all over. At the moment, they have a proper cut which is growing out and needs a cut again.

OhDoAdmitMrsDeVere · 08/12/2011 21:57

maypole I like Good Beginnings too. Nice products and have been around for ages.

Just for Me smells nice but is a bit heavy for DS3. DS4's hair soaks it all up though.

I used to use wax on the boy's dreads but found it attracted fluff. NOT a good look Grin

maypole1 · 08/12/2011 22:00

BourbonSprouts please go on line

With so many mixed raced children how they feel about being mixed with black can often be tied up in how they feel about their

It often starts with I hate my hair I wish I was White and had straight hair like you.

My friend who is White and has a mixed daughter has this issue at the moment
we had a awful day when she cut the whole thing off I think that was the moment my mate learned Cain row

Because I am black my dd hair looks not to different to mine

squeakytoy · 08/12/2011 22:01

Short hair is fine.. but when it has patterns clipped into it, on young kids it looks so horrible. It looks horrible on older kids too unless it is done properly.

TrinityRhino · 08/12/2011 22:03

I don't care what other people have to done to their kids hair

I wish more people didn't care what I had done with my childs hair OR what the child themselves had done to it and I wasn't a nasty mum because of it

dd2 only has half a head of hair, she pulls it out but by god the looks I get

also my elfin gecko with tiny features and huge eyes wanted her hair like tinkerbell but by god, I must have been evil to let her from the looks I have got

I get so sick of trying to shrug it all off Sad

maypole1 · 08/12/2011 22:03

thebigkahuna if you go back to page two it explains form their on

WinterWonderlandIsComing · 08/12/2011 22:04

I was reading this and wondering if Vitapoint might be a good product. It worked a treat on my crispy eighties perms Grin and a little goes a looooong way.

DS is blond and his hair doesn't get longer it just seems to get thicker, weirdly. When I steel myself to cut it it is always too short because he hates it so much (autistic / sensory issues) and my nerves can only take about four haircuts a year.

DamnBamboo · 08/12/2011 22:05

Dreadful? for dreads. Never, ever heard it and my DNs have got lovely, lovely dreads.

Dreadful thing to say maybe...

OP posts:
WinterWonderlandIsComing · 08/12/2011 22:06

Didn't mean to repeat your exact words there MrsDeVere!

I am going to buy some vitapoint tomorrow as I am now craving the smell of it.

TroublesomeEx · 08/12/2011 22:07

coldwed dreads = dreadful? That sounds to me like an association a white male Local Authority 'Diversity Manager' might make! Grin

My DS has shoulder length strawberry blonde hair. It's gorgeous.

SixFeetUnder · 08/12/2011 22:28

Ah DamnBamboo, cutting the boys hair is a bit like shearing sheep, quick get in and get out job, so I didn't actually notice it was much shorter than normal till after I'd done both of them Xmas Blush
