AIBU to be annoyed over the wrong spelling on my DS's name

He's 4 and we're just receiving the first lots of christmas cards from school.

The amount of parents that have spelt his name wrong is astounding. It's very common and has a really easy shortening that we use so surely it can't be that difficult to address him correctly.

Or AIBU?

Get used to it. YABU.

Pandemoniaa · 06/12/2011 23:24

Send them back, marked in red and ask for the cards to be resubmitted when the error has been corrected. Oh, and written out 10 times.

troisgarcons · 06/12/2011 23:24

I will wager 50 p you get cards with "Micheal" ....am I right????

PizzaSlut · 06/12/2011 23:25

I felt like doing that when numpty at pre school spelt his name wrong.

No he's not a Michael.

Ds1 and 2 get people spelling their names wrong all the time.

Ds3 is called tommy and lots of people have called him Thomas. The wrong spellings don't bother me, Thomas does though

PippiLongBottom · 06/12/2011 23:27

Sorry but you need to suck it up. Annoying, yes-very. Important- nah.

picalooo · 06/12/2011 23:28

It is going to happen but to be annoyed YANBU at all.

The name I am known by (shortened version of a relatively rare name) is always spelt wrong - think Tes with one s but people spell it with 2 as Tess or Jenny but people spell it Jenni
people spelling that wrong annoys me more than spelling saying my full name wrong (which i can forgive)

But say something - my big regret is that I didn't when I was a kid and my uncle still spells my name wrong and has since I was born and I don't know why my parents didn't correct him (as it is just the exact spelling of the first part of my name)

So YANBU but say something for christs sake

pinkyredrose · 06/12/2011 23:28

UABU and slightly OTT

WorraLiberty · 06/12/2011 23:29

Couldn't possibly say without knowing the name

If it's not an unusual name then you might as well just tell us

I doubt you'll spontaneously combust as soon as you hit 'post message'

FreudianSlipper · 06/12/2011 23:31

my name was nearly always spelt wrongly (and is a different name the way most spelt it) and still often is

really it does not matter it bothered my mum far more than it has ever bothered me

jasper · 06/12/2011 23:31

my name is misspelled 50% of the time. worse , people tell me how my name should be pronounced.

I've learned not to mind in the slightest

PizzaSlut · 06/12/2011 23:32

Ok its Samuel, known by most people as Sam. The spelling that bugs me is Samual. It's not just one person I have received 3 cards with that spelling so far.

what IS unreasonable is 4 year olds passing round CHristmas cards Xmas Grin

IneedAChristmasNickname · 06/12/2011 23:32

Maybe some of the children/parents wrting the cards don't have English as a 1st language, and therefore to them it's not a common name? I have a Muslim friend, her DS1 is in my DS1s class, her DD in my DS2s class, and her DS2 is a baby. ALl three of them have perfectly common (in her culture) names. I don't know how to spell any of them!

picaloo my Uncle can't spell my name, it's super common (2nd most popular year I was born) he still gets it wrong though!

Oh an I have a common 70's name that is reguarly misspelled with an extra letter, doesn't bother me too much as that is also a legit version of my name.

backwardLFDTpossom · 06/12/2011 23:33

DS's name is spelled incorrectly about 50% of the time as it can be spelled with one 'l' or two. YABU, does it really matter in the grand scheme of things?

troisgarcons · 06/12/2011 23:33

ooh that rankles ....the y swapped for an ie or a solo i ...feck sakes its not bloody rocket science to see how I sign my name.

frothy rant

Trills · 06/12/2011 23:34

You must move schools immediately.

EmpressOfTheSevenSnowflakes · 06/12/2011 23:34

If it's just the parents from school getting it wrong I wouldn't worry too much, unless the class teacher's provided a names list they'll never have seen your DS's name written down. If it's also the teachers / family members then I would say something.

jasper · 06/12/2011 23:34

Samual would probably bug me too!

What a ridiculous way to misspell a completely straightforward name.

EmpressOfTheSevenSnowflakes · 06/12/2011 23:36

Although I would be Hmm at Samual too.

PizzaSlut · 06/12/2011 23:37

The numpty was a pre school assistant that spelt it wrong.

OK I'm unreasonable and totally hormonal, I just needed a bit of a rant away from the other parents.

OP posts:
troisgarcons · 06/12/2011 23:37

never ever seen a Samual ... and I've seen some particularly stupid spellings of reasonably normal names

WorraLiberty · 06/12/2011 23:37

Ahh I see, yep mildly annoying I suppose.

I love your nickname though Xmas Grin
