to ask what grandparent names you use (in light of frustrating lunchtime experience)

So what happened was, among the 17 or so other jobs I was trying to squeeze in to my lunch hour, I had to buy two "Grandma and Grandad" cards for DD to send. Yes she would normally take care of this herself and will no doubt pay me back for them, but she is at school all day and there is a particular urgency for one of the cards. It needs posting soon and we want to put it inside our card to save on stamps.

Anyway I found the relevant section only to be confronted by a plethora of cards to "Nan and Grandad" or "Nanna and Grandad". I scanned the rack in growing frustration but the only "Grandma and Grandad" I could find was a large letter size so would have to be posted separately, which would cost nearly as much as the card itself. (Well I was in Card Factory)

At last, when I was about to give up in despair I found just one card of the right size for people with Grandmas not Nans or Nannas. So with at least a dozen choices for this Nanna person there was only one large and one small design for Grandma.

Now this I find hard to understand. I don't know anyone who has a Nanna. Seriously, among all my family, friends and acquaintances I can't think of one whose children say Nan or Nanna.

This being the case why would the shop have so many cards for her? I suppose one answer might be that there are hardly any Nannas only Grandmas so they have sold out of Grandma and are stuck with a lot of Nanna left on the shelf. But surely these shops aren't stupid and would stock what they have a market for?

So, in my long-winded way, I thought I would ask on here what names you all use for the grandparents so that I could tell whether IABU or Card Factory are. That's it really.

When DD was born she had
one Granma & Grandad (my parents)
two Gran & Grandad's (my Grandparents)
one Nannie & Pops (Dh Mam and stepdad)
two Nanna's and Grandad (Dh's grandparents)
one Grandpaps and Granna (Dh's dad & step mam)
one Nain & Taid (Dh's step-grandparent's from his stepfather)
one Grannie & Daddio (Dh's step-grandparent's from his stepfather)
18 grandparents and she was close to them all, it got a bit manic on christmas day as we all lived in the same village.

alwaysme · 06/12/2011 19:00

My DC have an Oma and Grampy. I used to have an Oma and Opa, I do miss them.

Florin · 06/12/2011 19:02

My baby's grandparents on my side will be called Mum-ma and Papa which is what I called my grandparents. Mil has chosen Grand-ma which I was pleased as Nanny/Nanna was not going to happen it really makes my skin itch. Not sure what fil will be-up to him!

RedHotSanta · 06/12/2011 19:02

My DCs have a Nanny, Bampy, Grandma and Grandad.
When I was young I had a Nana, 2 Grandads and a Grandma.
DH had a Nanny, Bampy, Nain and Taid.

This link is interesting-ish on the subject.

hettybunny · 06/12/2011 19:05

My mother is too frightened of appearing 'old' (even though she's 80!) so insists she is called by her Christian name - as I had to call my own grandmother, not very cosy or cuddly but neither of these ladies are/were! We also have Granny & Grandad (their choice) and Grandpa & Gr-Ali (my stepmother, Ali being short for Alison). Poor child will get confused when she can talk.....

featherbag · 06/12/2011 19:09

My DPs are Nana and Grandad, PILs are Granny and Grandpa.

Takver · 06/12/2011 19:10

2 x Nanny here, one Grandad, and one Grandpa. But dd's Grandpa is American, I thought Grandma & Grandpa were generally an American thing.

I think Nanny is a bit more downmarket than the alternatives as if you come from a posh family you might have one of the paid variety Grin

I had 2 x Nanny & Grandad

mondayschild · 06/12/2011 19:11

We have Grandma (my mum) and Nana (MIL). DS was born a few weeks before Christmas, and we'd got 'Grandma and Grandad' cards for both sets of GPs from him, but MIL had written from 'Nana' on their card to DS as this is what she thought he'd call her so it's stuck. Fine by me - certainally saves any confusion.

We also have Grandad[my dad's first name] and Grandad [FIL's first name], but my dad has been re-Christened Grandad Beard by DS who is going through a stage of say-what-you-see Smile

pinkhebe · 06/12/2011 19:12

we also have them saying

from the grandchildren
from your granddaughter
from your grandson

covers all variations Grin

FrostyTheCrunchyFrog · 06/12/2011 19:19

A Grandma, a Granny, a Nana and an Evil step-parent from hell a Grandad's wife. Oh, and two Grandads, interchangeable.

UserNameNotAvailable · 06/12/2011 19:24

We say nana (one n) and Granda for all sets of gp's and ggp's. If we are talking about them and the dc aren't sure we will say nana (first name) or Granda (first name)
Slightly o/t but it really annoys me when our local evening newspaper writes MUM when everyone - except the odd few - say/write mam. IT'S MAM FFS! Angry :o

Whizkidwithacrazystreak · 06/12/2011 19:26

My mum chose Min Min (a nickname my late father gave her) as her mother, and my 'Granny' was truly special and Mum didn't think she could live up to how wonderful Granny was.

TheThingUpstairs · 06/12/2011 19:30

Both sets were known as Nanna/Nanny and Granddad, sometimes Nana (first name).

muffinino82 · 06/12/2011 19:44

Nan and Bampi. Nain, the Welsh version, perhaps makes Nan more common here and is itself used a lot. Grandfathers were Bampi G and Bampi J - try getting those on a card! Grin
Sadly I only have to get one for my nan this year and I never knew my mother's mother, so Y(and others)ABU to whinge about the variations of endearments. Be glad that you're still lucky enough to be able to use them

SlinkingOutsideInSocks · 06/12/2011 19:46

MIL, Irish, is Nana. We inherited it, as our DC aren't her first grandchildren.

GruffalowsMammy · 06/12/2011 19:48

Try having a Grandpa with a Granny I have looked everywhere I can think of and haven't found a card yet!

SlinkingOutsideInSocks · 06/12/2011 19:49

Oh dear, in the nicest possible way, let's not go down the 'well, as least you have grandmothers' route... :-/

I say this as someone who never met either grandma, nor did my Mum meet my own DC.

Yorky · 06/12/2011 19:50

Muffinino - I've never met anyone else who had a Nain!

My DC now call my dad Taid, which gets boring explaining it to people who hear them and wonder what they heard!

muffinino82 · 06/12/2011 19:59

Oh dear, in the nicest possible way, let's not go down the 'well, as least you have grandmothers' route... :-/

Oh, let's, why not? Not sure you get to tell me what to post Hmm Just pointing it out, is all, geez. I'm sorry you never got to meet your grandmothers and your DC won't meet theirs. I would rather have the dilemma of getting a card than not, it really wasn't deserving of an 'in the nicest possible way' (which is always meant in a not very nice way Grin).
I also never realised that people felt so strongly about what others call their grandparents and what I call mine seems to be hated, for some reason. Not that I give a shit Wink

That may be too many smilies so let's add another for fun Xmas Grin

mumtosome · 06/12/2011 20:02

My son has 3 sets of grandparents. My mum and her partner and Gran and PJ ( papa John), my dad an dhis wife are Papa and Gran Margaret and my hubbies parents are Oma and Opa (they're Dutch) . We struggle to get cards with Gran and Papa on them.

muffinino82 · 06/12/2011 20:05

*Muffinino - I've never met anyone else who had a Nain!

I always used Bampi, not Taid, but I really like that, it's softer than some names used. Only my brother and I speak Welsh so we didn't start out with Taid and it was a bit late to start once we got to school.

I use mam, too, never anything else, and my nan was nanny when I was younger, much to the dissaproval of others, so it seems Grin

wonkylegs · 06/12/2011 20:05

We have granny and grandad Yorkshire and racing car grandad and Wales granny.
Loads of kids round here have Nans and nannas but they also call mummy, Mam (I will never be a mam) - North East.

SlinkingOutsideInSocks · 06/12/2011 20:06

Guilt-trip away then muffin, if you must.

PeppaPigHostage · 06/12/2011 20:07

Yorky I said further down that I had a Nain and Taid and I love the name Taid because I only knew my Taid by that name (didn't have friends with a Taid or anything) so it seems so personal to him.

I struggled to spell it though when I was little, he got a lot of cards to Tiad!

cece · 06/12/2011 20:10

Try finding 'Grannie' on a card - almost impossible. If you are lucky enough to find Granny then you are doing well but Grannie pah!
