to ask what grandparent names you use (in light of frustrating lunchtime experience)

So what happened was, among the 17 or so other jobs I was trying to squeeze in to my lunch hour, I had to buy two "Grandma and Grandad" cards for DD to send. Yes she would normally take care of this herself and will no doubt pay me back for them, but she is at school all day and there is a particular urgency for one of the cards. It needs posting soon and we want to put it inside our card to save on stamps.

Anyway I found the relevant section only to be confronted by a plethora of cards to "Nan and Grandad" or "Nanna and Grandad". I scanned the rack in growing frustration but the only "Grandma and Grandad" I could find was a large letter size so would have to be posted separately, which would cost nearly as much as the card itself. (Well I was in Card Factory)

At last, when I was about to give up in despair I found just one card of the right size for people with Grandmas not Nans or Nannas. So with at least a dozen choices for this Nanna person there was only one large and one small design for Grandma.

Now this I find hard to understand. I don't know anyone who has a Nanna. Seriously, among all my family, friends and acquaintances I can't think of one whose children say Nan or Nanna.

This being the case why would the shop have so many cards for her? I suppose one answer might be that there are hardly any Nannas only Grandmas so they have sold out of Grandma and are stuck with a lot of Nanna left on the shelf. But surely these shops aren't stupid and would stock what they have a market for?

So, in my long-winded way, I thought I would ask on here what names you all use for the grandparents so that I could tell whether IABU or Card Factory are. That's it really.

FreudianSlipper My Granny was an incredible snob. Working class who married 'well' the worst kind of snob I think, but I loved her, she thought the Queen was rather common!!

FreudianSlipper · 06/12/2011 15:18

she would have loved mn then :)

SpaghettiTwirlerPrancerVixen · 06/12/2011 15:18

I have 2 grandmas, DD has 2 grandmas, 2 grandads, 1 great-grandma and 1 big nana.

The nana bit I hate, can't stand nan, nana or nanna!

EnjoyResponsibly · 06/12/2011 15:27

Nanny and Grandma

Nanny is a big South East thing I think. But I can never get Nanny cards not even with those stupid bloody bears on. If you're having trouble getting Grandma cards OP I'm double buggered, so DS will be getting the glitter out Xmas Grin

browneyesblue · 06/12/2011 15:42

I was looking for a Grandma/Granny and Grandad Christmas card in Clintons and I had exactly the same problem OP -one giant and one small. There were loads of cards for Nan, Nanny and Nanna though, and even a Nannan (which I had never heard of). I don't know anyone who uses any of those variations.

RhondaRoo · 06/12/2011 15:44

Nannan that's what DD called my mum while she was first learning to talk, didn't know it was an actual name!

afoggygrotto · 06/12/2011 15:44

Grandma & Papa, Granny & Grandad and Grandpa & SM's name.

I don't know anyone with Nan/Nanna/Nanny. I have a Nain though (Welsh obviously) & a Granny & Grandad.

ElfandSafety · 06/12/2011 15:45

Nan and Nana, Grandad and Pops (his choice)

WhoKnowsWhereTheMistletoes · 06/12/2011 15:46

When we moved to the South East I suddenly noticed all my new school friends used Nan, np one else used Granny at all, if you were being picked on for your accent already it didn't help, so I used to refer to them as my Nans in conversation, but never at home or to their faces.

We buy named cards for birthdays sometimes, or Mothering Sunday, not for Christmas. But sometimes it would be nice to buy, for example, a mug with Granny on it and they are very hard to find, it's all Grandma or Nan.

pranma · 06/12/2011 15:47

My dgc have a Grandma[me],a Granny [ds-i-l's mum] and a Nana [his stepmum]

Hulababy · 06/12/2011 15:53

My DD has the following grandparents:

nana and grandad (Surname) - my parents
nana and grandad (Surname) - PILs
grandma - my nana (but others call her grandma, hence why DD did
nana and grandad (surname) - my other grandparents
grandad great - DH's grandad

Never knew it was supposedly working class to use the name nana though. Many people round here seem to tbh, so maybe more likely that it is regional. We are in South Yorkshire.

KeepInMindItsAlmostChristmas · 06/12/2011 15:57

We have nana and Grandma

pinkhebe · 06/12/2011 15:58

I merchandise greetings cards, Grandma and Grandad and Nan are the most popular.

What may have happened is that they have temporarily sold out of the Grandma and Grandad cards and haven't had time to replenish them.

Asda have loads Grin

SnapesMistressofMerriment · 06/12/2011 15:59

Granny and Granddad, Oma and Opa are what I called mine.

Good luck finding Oma and Opa cards.

bigTillyMincepie · 06/12/2011 16:02

Grandma plus Nanny and Grandad here.

I had a Grandada!

Beanbagz · 06/12/2011 16:11

My children had a 'Granny & Little Grandad' and a 'Nana & Big Grandad' despite the fact that both Grandads were about the same height and weight. Maybe it was an age thing when my DD came up with it?

My dad is still known as Little Grandad even though the other Grandad died over 4 years ago now.

Of course in some countries in the world it's common to have different names for different branches of the family so your parents siblings wouldn't all be lumped together under the heading 'Aunts & Uncles'.

Oh, and we use to the word 'Niblings' in our house too. It's used to describe my niece & nephew (son & daughter of my sibling). I don't know if anyone else uses this or whether we came up with it?

RockingBEYONDtheXmasTree · 06/12/2011 16:28

I've near enough never been able to buy the right cards...

Both of my Grandmothers are Nan, Nanny when I was younger. My mum is Nanny to DS, as is my MIL. My Nans mum (only one alive then) so therefore my Great Grandma, was Nanny Mam.

Both of my Grandfathers are Bampy. My dad is Bampy to DS, FIL is Grancha to him.

FreakoidOrganisoid · 06/12/2011 16:30

Granny
Grumps
Grandpa
Nkuku

ScatterChasse · 06/12/2011 16:33

I had Oma and Grandad (which was awful for cards!).

Mum's parents are Grandmum and Grandad.

ScatterChasse · 06/12/2011 16:33

Beanbagz, I love the idea of niblings!

FourThousandHoles · 06/12/2011 16:34

IL's are Grandma & Grandad
Mum is Granny

I've never had too much trouble finding cards with the appropriate names tbh, despite the fact that round here most female grandparents are known as Nanny

Could it be that they had sold out?

TheFestiveWife · 06/12/2011 16:34

My mum is Nanny B and MIL is Nanny L. It gets shortened to Nan sometimes as they get older, (bit like mummy and mum). I always called my nans nan or nanny. Is it a regional thing? Pretty much everyone I know and even as a child called their grandmothers nan or nanny or occasionally nin.

KateMiddIeton · 06/12/2011 16:38

YABU to buy cards with Grandma and Grandad on. They are almost always vile. Not quite as bad as "To my husband" or "To my wife" cards but still yuk.

Buy nice ones that are blank inside and just write whatever you call them in there. Problem solved Smile

SucksToBeMe · 06/12/2011 16:46

Nanny and Pop Pop.

janek · 06/12/2011 16:53
