to ask what grandparent names you use (in light of frustrating lunchtime experience)

So what happened was, among the 17 or so other jobs I was trying to squeeze in to my lunch hour, I had to buy two "Grandma and Grandad" cards for DD to send. Yes she would normally take care of this herself and will no doubt pay me back for them, but she is at school all day and there is a particular urgency for one of the cards. It needs posting soon and we want to put it inside our card to save on stamps.

Anyway I found the relevant section only to be confronted by a plethora of cards to "Nan and Grandad" or "Nanna and Grandad". I scanned the rack in growing frustration but the only "Grandma and Grandad" I could find was a large letter size so would have to be posted separately, which would cost nearly as much as the card itself. (Well I was in Card Factory)

At last, when I was about to give up in despair I found just one card of the right size for people with Grandmas not Nans or Nannas. So with at least a dozen choices for this Nanna person there was only one large and one small design for Grandma.

Now this I find hard to understand. I don't know anyone who has a Nanna. Seriously, among all my family, friends and acquaintances I can't think of one whose children say Nan or Nanna.

This being the case why would the shop have so many cards for her? I suppose one answer might be that there are hardly any Nannas only Grandmas so they have sold out of Grandma and are stuck with a lot of Nanna left on the shelf. But surely these shops aren't stupid and would stock what they have a market for?

So, in my long-winded way, I thought I would ask on here what names you all use for the grandparents so that I could tell whether IABU or Card Factory are. That's it really.

DD has a Granny (MIL) and a Grandma (my mum). Both chose their preferred name.

DH informed his dad that he would be "Granddad" to avoid problems buying cards Xmas Grin. Everyone seems happy.

Granny and Granddad, however, have other grandchildren who call them a variety of twee names. I have not commented.

clam · 06/12/2011 17:00

Surely the solution is just to not choose a card with names on? Can't stand them anyway. Up there with sickly rhymes in twirly silver writing.

HowToLookGoodGlaikit · 06/12/2011 17:20

Gran & Grandad, and they also have a Nana & Papa.

DrNortherner · 06/12/2011 17:23

My Ds has a Grandma and a Memere. His couisins use Nana.

I have a Gran.

south345 · 06/12/2011 17:25

I have a granny and grandpa and my dads mum was grandma and her husband grandad, my kids have a narna (ds1's name for her) and grandads.

Abcinthia · 06/12/2011 17:26

I have two nans, one granddad and a grampy.

Clayhead · 06/12/2011 17:27

Nana and Nain here.

CovMum · 06/12/2011 17:31

We have Nanny and Grandad here and now also Great Nanny. Can't bear the word Granny or Grandma but each to their own. My nephew uses Nanna for his other Nan to avoid confusion.

whackamole · 06/12/2011 17:35

I have yia yia and bapou.

YABU. Try finding mine! Grin

1Catherine1 · 06/12/2011 17:37

You know moonpig can solve everyone's prob with this one as you can change it.

My grandparents are granny and grandad and my parents are granny and grandad to my DD. My inlaws are something entirely different since inlaws aren't english.

kickingking · 06/12/2011 17:40

DS has a Nanna (my mum) and a Grandma (DH's step mum). I don't really like grandma as it's not what I was bought up with but they chose what they wanted to be called.

What I really can't stand is that in DH's family you have to call the grandparents by their last name as well - as in Grandma Robinson. I hate that, so formal and matronly. When we wanted to distinguish between Nannas we said Nanna Margaret or Nanna Jean.

(All names have been changed to protect the innocent!)

Clarajinglebumps · 06/12/2011 17:41

we have a Granny-next door and "other granny" and a Granda and Papa.
Granny next door lives..well next door and much to the horror of my mum she's the other granny.
ha! it makes me chuckle!

LondonMumsie · 06/12/2011 17:46

I had a nana and a granny. My kids have a nana (MIL) and a granny (my mum).

Don't know any Nanna's with two n's.

NorthernNumpty · 06/12/2011 17:46

Try finding a great grandma card!

YADNBU I always have this issue with cards millions of nan and nanna cards but v few grandma and grandad cards, particularly together!

journoem · 06/12/2011 18:27

Mine are Mams & Dats, it's a Welsh thing and the short versions of mamgu (grandma) and datgu (granddad). It used to really annoy me when I was younger that no cards said this on the front Grin

EssentialFattyAcid · 06/12/2011 18:33

Make the cards yourself
Or send cards that just say "Happy Birthday"!!!

It has never even occurred to me to send a card that said any name for grandparents on the front!

This is where you are going wrong!

Nana variants are generally more working class and also more popular in the north of england ime
We have granny & grandad and grandma & grandpa - they got to choose their own names.

IneedAChristmasNickname · 06/12/2011 18:36

I had a Nannie and Gramps (impossible to buy for so they always got Nanny and Grandad) and Grandma and Grandad.
DC have Nana and Grandad (very hard to find ime, most cards are spelt Nanna)
Grandma and Grandpa (Grandma v. easy to find, Grandpa, not so)
Gran
Grandad
We make most of our cards though, so problem solved!

pinkhebe · 06/12/2011 18:43

none of my cards have the Nanna spelling, only the Nana (but I'm in the south maybe that makes a difference)

lurkerspeaks · 06/12/2011 18:43

Scottish Central Belt.

I hate Nanny. Which is probably a hangover from my childhood "it's common, darling" and classed along with ITV and sliced white bread!

Anyway, as children we started with Grandma and Grandpa x 2. Over the years this has morphed into Granny (widowed) and Gran (she hates Granny and won't answer to it) and the rather fabulous Gramps.

My parents would chose some variant on these. Can't speak for the outlaws.

RE cards: moon pig or M&S personalised all the way. They also remember to post the damn things at the right time which I personally struggle with.

GwendolineMaryLacedwithBrandy · 06/12/2011 18:46

DD has grandma and grandad and grandma and papa.

I had 2 x nanny and grandads

IneedAChristmasNickname · 06/12/2011 18:48

pink I'm in the south too! Most cards I have looked at say Nanna, or at least they did last time I looked which was about 6 years ago! Xmas Grin

pinkhebe · 06/12/2011 18:52

shop in asda then! Grin they also do personalised cards

Xmasbaby11 · 06/12/2011 18:55

you need to decide on names for each grandparent (between dd and gp) before looking for cards. But until then just go with the least offensive name.

IneedAChristmasNickname · 06/12/2011 18:56

I will try Asda next time I'm too lazy/disorganised to make one! Xmas Grin

DonInKillerHeels · 06/12/2011 18:59

Two Grannies and a Grandpa in this house. In my day, though, it was Grandfather and Grandmama...
