To buy my son another pair of school shoes? ( forth this term)

How to other parents of active boys cope? my sone walks around 8 miles a day, and plays football in his school shoes, before and after school. Yes, I know his school shoes would last longer if the football was done in trainers, but then all that happens is the trainers quickly need replacing too, AND he has another bag to carry/ remember, along with school bag, lunch box, pe kit, swimming stuff, verious inrtuments.....

I've tried good shoes, clarks shoes, kickers, other expensive shoes, cheap shoes, what ever I buy, he wears them out faster than I can afford to replace them.

I don't want to stop him walking to school either, as he is very active, and just gets restless and distracted at school if he doesn't have enough exercise in his ruitine.

My ds is similar. He wears astroturf football shoes. They have lasted longer than the other shoes so far

I think if you get 3 months from a pair of shoes that does all that you're doing well TBH. I mean 40 miles a week is alot of shoe leather, before you even add in everything else.

mumblechum1 · 05/12/2011 16:43

8 miles a day?! He must have to walk for about 3 hours a day to and from school, then?

531800000008 · 05/12/2011 16:45

how old is he?

LaurieFairyCake · 05/12/2011 16:48

Your son walks 4 miles to school Shock

do you live in a hole in't road Xmas Grin

Crabapple99 · 05/12/2011 16:48

he's 12, yes he walks for hours, I walk with him most of the way, as knowing how active he is we chose a secondary school we could do this with. There is a bus, but he rarely wants to take it. ( the 8 miles isn't all too and from school, only 5-6 miles is the school journey).

Sounds like I'm not the only one with this problem then! I'll look into trying astroturfs. Thanks

we're on the third pair with DS1 and he "only" walks 1,5-2 miles a day. my DS literally wears them until there's a hole in the sole or until the sole comes off, otherwise we'd be getting him a new pair every two weeks! so you're doing alright considering all the walking, it is all normal!

SardineQueen · 05/12/2011 16:57

Good for you and your son on the walking.

No idea about the shoes though sorry.

mercibucket · 05/12/2011 16:59

If he walks that daily, I'd have him in proper walking shoes tbh and keep school shoes at school in pe bag if pos

thanks, very good ideas! can't think why it had never occured to me before that he doesn't actually have to walk to school IN his school shoes.

cat 64, I think 11 miles walk to school would be overdoing it even for my son!

Ds (reception) walks to school, about 1.2 miles each way, usually in wellies or his nornal shoes to preserve his school shoes. School shoes already looking pretty knackered though. Why is it that the school shoes are knackered but his "normal" shoes are absolutely fine when they get about equal wear and are both from the same place?

another vote for DMs, and walking boots/getting changed there is genius

redexpat · 06/12/2011 08:35

Another option, although it depends on what you mean by worn out. Could you get the shoes resoled at a coblers? It's really lovely to hear that people still walk to school.

winterfox · 06/12/2011 08:59

i am also sick of shoes lasting two months at the most, i spent over £35 on some lovely next shoes for ds (he has large feet!) and they lasted half as long as the cheapo tesco ones. it's so frustrating!

4 pairs/term does sound excessive, even so.
DS walks almost 2 miles/day, and plays footie every lunchtime, and is also 12, and his last pair of school shoes lasted more than 14 months.

Pascha · 07/12/2011 13:35

What about cycling to school instead? Less wear on shoes, still gets the exercise.
