Your not suppose to put them up until 13th for luck. I need luck so I'm waiting. Plus it's ds's 1st birthday next week so don't want it being over shadowed

I want to clean the entire house before I put ours up....and I havent got time! I might have to compromise and do dwnstairs....then decorate on Friday eening when the DC finsih school....upstairs cleaning can happen on the weekend....I like a sparkly house for the baking and making! Xmas Grin

WhoopsyLa · 04/12/2011 14:56

Mabel why not?

bruffin · 04/12/2011 15:04

mine always goes two sundays before christmas usually after the chrisdingle service at the local church, although dcs are a bit too big for that now.

lubeybaublely · 04/12/2011 15:08

I put mine up quite late (about the 18th) and take it down early, (2nd Jan) I get sick of the sight of it otherwise

Didn't have one at all last year due to youngest cat being a nuisance with it the year before, she's mellowed a little now though so think I might risk it again!

exoticfruits · 04/12/2011 15:19

The week before is generally my date.

ToothlessFairy · 04/12/2011 15:25

Ours won't be up till just before 24th, so not unreasonable to wait until the 13th in my view.

sue52 · 04/12/2011 16:55

Ours goes up on the 20th though we do put a wreath on the front door earlier.

HoudiniHissy · 04/12/2011 16:57

I decorate the house for DS birthday (14th) he is the trigger for christmas (advent calendar excepted of course)

pinkyp · 04/12/2011 18:10

Mine wont go up until X-mas eve .... and it will come down twelfth night (5 Jan)

BoffinMum · 04/12/2011 18:13

Mine goes up on 23rd.
I actually don't really like Xmas decorations as they make the place look cluttered and messy. But I have to concede on the bling as DH loves them!

GwendolineMaryLacedwithBrandy · 04/12/2011 18:19

Ours usually goes up the week before Christmas. This year, nearly 4yo dd nagged so much that it went up yesterday. I'm sick of looking at it already Xmas Hmm

JackTheGrinch · 04/12/2011 18:25

If I had my way It would go up xmas eve and come down boxing day!!!

marriedandwreathedinholly · 04/12/2011 18:36

Ours will go up on 18th + lights. Decorated 19th in time for the cleaner to hoover up the bits on 20th Grin.

ChippingInNeedsSleep · 04/12/2011 18:40

A tree would not overshadow your DS's 1st birthday Grin

HoHoHoldsilver · 04/12/2011 18:50

We always put ours up the 2nd weekend in December, I think that gives the decorations enough time to get dusty on 12th night. Never worry about the decorations ruining DS birthday - as it's on Christmas Day itself - it always adds to the occasion and when he was younger he used to think it was brilliant that everywhere decorated for his birthday Xmas Smile

IneedAChristmasNickname · 04/12/2011 18:59

Mine will go up when the DC break up from school, which this year is 21st, so tree will go up on 22nd.
I'd leave it until 24th if they'd let me! Xmas Grin

cardibach · 04/12/2011 19:25

I usually havea real tree, so any more than two weeks inside leads to baldness. It'll probably go up 17th/18th this year as I have visitors before Christmas. It'll be down by New Year's Eve. I love Christmas, but don't like it to last forever.

JugglingWithGoldandMyrhh · 04/12/2011 19:33

We put ours up yesterday because we had family visitig today.

I've always bee a later putter upper before but I'm a complete covert.

It's fab. I love it Xmas Smile

LittleMissHumbuggery · 04/12/2011 19:52

Mine will go up on the 17th, and on sufference as I chuffing hate the damn things! :o

Rhubarbgarden · 04/12/2011 20:40

I don't think I can be arsed with a tree this year. I'm too knackered.

SockMunkee · 04/12/2011 20:46

I am totally knackered and skint, cba with it really. But ds is looking forward to Xmas and the tree etc so we will go buy one next weekend or the following week. I take it down on either New Years Eve or 1st Jan.

hanreeoak · 04/12/2011 21:06

My sons birthday is on the 14th of Dec so our tree for the last couple years has gone up on the 15th, I decorate the lounge just for the day on my childrens birthdays so it would be a bit unfair if I did not do it on his birthday. When he gets older (he's 3 this year) if he wants them to go up earlier then we will. I did ask anyone I met with a December birthday during his first year how they felt about decorations, most said put them up after so till he is old enough to decide then thats our plan. Xmas Grin

Linnet · 04/12/2011 21:42

My mum always put her tree up 12 days before Christmas and took it down 12 days after Christmas. This is also what I do. I thought we were the only people who did it that way as you tend to see so many trees going up earlier and earlier every year, but I found that my friend at work puts hers up 12 days before Christmas too, so I'm not the only one.

Toadinthehole · 05/12/2011 05:36

My parents put up the tree on Christmas Eve; the rationale being that it is Advent until then.

Advent is a fast, so it's silly to put up decorations; it's a bit like eating one's Easter eggs on Good Friday.

Decorations should come down on the last day of Christmas, better known as Twelth Night.

My wife's parents put up the tree (and decorated it) on St Nicholas' Day, which is 6 December. I've no idea what lies behind that, except that St Nicholas is better known these days as (...I can hardly bear to say it) Santa Claus.
