Your not suppose to put them up until 13th for luck. I need luck so I'm waiting. Plus it's ds's 1st birthday next week so don't want it being over shadowed

I must admit my Xmas tree annoys me once xmas is over and I'd take it down boxing day if I could.

I always thought that the tree was meant to go up on around the 1st of Dec!

WhoKnowsWhereTheMistletoes · 04/12/2011 12:12

Ours is going up next Sunday. Pre-DCs I would have always plumped for a week to 10 days before Christmas, but we do it a week earlier now. Personally I think the start of December is too early but each to their own. We have got the Christmas music on though. I've never heard of this 13th business either.

Op ive heard of the 12 days before and 12 days after thing. You're not alone! Grin

I put mine up as late as possible.

journoem · 04/12/2011 12:35

I've also heard of the 12 days before, 12 days later thing! My mum used to do it like that and I used to get annoyed when I was younger that I couldn't put it up before then Grin

DP and I will be hopefully putting up our Xmas tree and fairy lights (yay! I love fairy lights!) on Wednesday after we rearrange our flat and give it a jolly good clean. But I agree with most people that it's entirely up to you and your schedule as to when you put it up Smile

SandStorm · 04/12/2011 12:38

Ours goes up when I've had enough of the children nagging.

PontyMython · 04/12/2011 12:41

In our house it's never before the 7th as that's my birthday Xmas Grin last year I think we actually put it up that evening with carols etc, but I don't think we are anywhere near organised enough for that this time.

i never bothered with a tree until last year (pfb ds' 1st xmas) & even then, it was xmas eve i put it up.

will put it up at some point this year, probably wont leave it so late again, but, i don't really like xmas much, it's solely for the kids.

i don't think it really matters much, just put it up whenever it suits you.

pinkyp · 04/12/2011 12:46

I'm glad it's not just me that's heard of 12 days before and 12 days after, was thinking maybe my mum had made it up when I was a child..Wink

Twelfth Night refers to after Xmas. I have never heard of any limitation as to how early it goes up. Apart from my own personal tolerance of having a tree in my living room. Ours will go up a week to 10 days before Xmas.

itsbrandybutterandtinseltime · 04/12/2011 13:09

Ours is up already (well, since last night) but this is the first year we've had an artificial tree. If you have a real tree, I've found you can't put it up until at least 14th ish or it's dead by the main event!

You're not being miserable. Use the time to get gifts wrapped so they're ready to go under the tree as soon as its up!

itsbrandybutterandtinseltime · 04/12/2011 13:10

And sending you good luck vibes OP. God bless you and your family xx

FreudianSlipper · 04/12/2011 13:15

i put mine up a week before, ds is 4 so this is the first year he is really excited about sata, the tree and so on so will put it up next weekend

Pandemoniaa · 04/12/2011 13:38

Our tree (and all the decorations) go up on Christmas Eve. They come down on 6th January. I shall burn a Yule log for Yule but that's it. This tradition came about, as much as anything because ds2's birthday is in December so we've always had a rule about Christmas decorations following his birthday. Not getting in first!

This year I am slightly struggling to stay on my high horse because it will be dgd's first Christmas and at 11 months old she's already liking the twinkly, sparkly stuff. But I am trying to be resolute...

Mrsrobertduvall · 04/12/2011 13:44

No idea.,,,,maybe about the 15th but it will be down on Jan 1st.

RainboweBrite · 04/12/2011 13:56

Another one who has not heard of the 12 days before either. We usually get a real tres, so the earliest we ever put it up is the 10th December, although I would prefer it a week after this, which is what we did prior to DC.
Tree, not tres!

Mishy1234 · 04/12/2011 14:05

YANBU, you should put it up when it suits you.

Ours usually doesn't go up until Christmas Eve, but will go up on the 23rd this year as we're at the inlaws on the 24th and will be doing theirs then.

I quite like seeing them up in other peoples houses earlier in dec (and in the shops etc), but have always done it on Christmas eve.

StepAwayFromTheMincePies · 04/12/2011 14:08

pontymython its mine too on the 7th Smile we always put the tree up the weekend after it. happy birthday (almost)

Shutupanddrive · 04/12/2011 14:33

I also thought it was supposed to be 12 days before and after. However i will do it once school broken up so weekend of 17/18th this year

SauvignonBlanche · 04/12/2011 14:39

YANBU. It's a bit early for me but each to their own.

MabelLucyAttwell · 04/12/2011 14:40
