to wonder why some women give birth naked?

Just seen a video of a woman doing this, and I know a couple of friends who have chosen to. Am about to give birth to my 4th and personally couldn't bear the thought of being naked in a room of strangers, also don't understand why there is the need...not criticising anyone who does it, just genuinely asking the question so no rudeness or flaming please!

With DD1 I was in the bath in hospital when I felt urge to push - the last thing on my mind was putting clothes on so I gave birth pretty much naked (think mws threw a gown over me!

tooearlymustdache · 26/11/2011 19:41

well, when your vagina, labia and vulva are the main focus of attention, and you've most likely shat on the bed anyway - a scrap of fabric draped over one's shoulder seems a tad..well, futile?

Fisharefriendsnotmincepies · 26/11/2011 19:41

I did on dc2.. I was boiling hot! Only realised after I pushed him out that I hadn't even seen the midwives face! Poor woman had a hell of a view but it was honestly the last thing on my mind.

Bearcrumble · 26/11/2011 19:42

Maybe they are hot and sweaty. Maybe they want skin to skin as soon as the baby's out. Maybe they are having a waterbirth. It's not like the medical professionals haven't seen it all anyway - if someone was stitching up my bits I wouldn't worry that much about giving them a flash of boob.

Because I was at home in a pool- with DH, a midwife (who had seen most of it anyway) and a student midwife observing. There were no strangers at my birth.

I ended up naked in both labours, no idea why. Guess I was hot or felt constricted, though I was only in a t-shirt nightie thing.

DoMeDon · 26/11/2011 19:43

I actually didn't know women wore clothes to birth!?!

laurenamium · 26/11/2011 19:44

I was in so much pain and high off drugs I didn't really think twice about my clothes, they were annoying and in the way Blush

Ponyclubmum · 26/11/2011 19:45

I gave birth naked. Wasn't really by choice, I just was so hot and out of it on pethidine that I couldn't bear wearing anything. I also couldn't really of cared less at that moment whether I was naked or not!
I don't plan on being naked next time, but we'll see...

callmemrs · 26/11/2011 19:45

No strangers with mine either. Dh, who I'd known for a good few years, and the midwife, who I'd met at most ante natal appointments

GwendolineMaryLacey · 26/11/2011 19:46

:o tooearly

I wasn't naked but I can imagine that you get to a point where you don't want anything touching you, even clothes. I always thought I'd be really self conscious but I was shit-faced on pethidine and Julie Andrews and all her nuns could have been in the room encouraging me with song for all I cared.

SilveryMoon · 26/11/2011 19:47

I am very very insecure about my body. Very.
The day ds1 was born, there was a heat-wave. I was so so hot that I had to take my shirt off, I really didn't care about having everything on show, I was too hot, in too much pain and too high on G&A to care!

NinthWave · 26/11/2011 19:48

"Don't understand why there is the need" sounds like a judgement or criticism to me - you're saying it's 'unnecessary' to be naked, but that sounds as if you're implying that women who give birth naked are exhibitionists or something!

Zipitydooda · 26/11/2011 19:48

I was much more comfortable naked as I was so hot with 1 and 2. 3 was so quick I only had time to take off my coat and trousers and knickers before he was born then had to get my DH to strip me off after for skin-to-skin. Why would you leave your clothes on??

molly3478 · 26/11/2011 19:48

I did as was i water pool. Didnt bother me as you have to have your bits out aywayand the rest is the same as going topless at the beach.

latrucha · 26/11/2011 19:48

When I got to the delivery room, I pulled my dress off. Not sure why. I think the MW threw a gown on me but I was a bit beyond by then.

thebigkahuna · 26/11/2011 19:48

I gave birth naked because I was put in one of those horrible hospital gowns for my (failed) epidural and it was annoying the fuck out of me whenever I tried to move into a position to make my (stuck fast) nearly 10 pounder move an inch during my three hour second stage.

If I had had a gun I would have shot myself, tbh, so a room full of people who were already looking at my fanjo seeing the rest of me really was the least of my worries.

HandMini · 26/11/2011 19:49

I'm with Sparkly - it may be all on display down below, but that doesn't mean I don't want anything on at all!

Choufleur · 26/11/2011 19:49

Why would anyone want to be clothed? Clothes get in the way. And I had a water birth and the thought of clothes clinging to me is horrid. It was only DH and the midwife in the room anyway, but a marching could have come through while I was pushing and I wouldn't have really cared.

HappyCamel · 26/11/2011 19:49

I was too hot so I insisted, in a haze of G&A, that all my clothing was removed apart from my socks because my feet are always cold.

jchocchip · 26/11/2011 19:49

I would ask the strangers to leave. They would interfere with my labour. Would take clothes off to use birthing pool, yes, but some people keep a tshirt on until baby is born, then doesn't everyone do skin to skin these days?

DogStinkhorn · 26/11/2011 19:51

When better to be in a birthday suit than at a Birth Day?
