to only wash bath towels once a month?

or less Blush

DH is in charge of washing his own towel and I am sure he never puts it in the wash more often than once every 2 or 3 months...

DS's goes in about once every 2 months (but it barely touches him as he likes to run around naked pretending to be a train driver straight after his bath, which dries him quite effectively).

I usually wash mine about every month but have realised that I haven't washed it since coming home from hospital with DD, who is now 5 weeks...in my defence, there is one HECK of a lot of other washing to do and it just won't ever fit in the machine....

We do wash out clothes (!) and sheets once a week. And I do the kitchen hand towel every week or two - it gets quite grubby and also fits in the machine with another wash easily.

But are we grim and disgusting when it comes to bath towels? How often do normal people wash bath towels?

I wash towels weekly. Bedding on the other hand probably regularly goes for a month Blush

Get0rf · 25/11/2011 15:44

Every day in summer, but at the moment every other day (Tuesday, Thursday and once at the weekend usually).

These are my sheets - dd does her own and changes hers once a week.

Me and dp sleep in the nude, it would feel skanky in the extreme if I didn't change them regularlt.

Plus I like clean sheets, and it only takes 5 mins.

MildlyNarkyPuffin · 25/11/2011 15:46

I know someone who has two washing machines and a massive dryer so she can wash all towels after one use and all bedding daily. And she (and the DCs) have showers every morning and night - she washes her hair both times and the DC's hair gets water and a drop of shampoo before bed and a proper wash in the mornings. She is very lovely but has serious issues about cleanliness.

wigglybeezer · 25/11/2011 15:47

i am experimenting with microfibre towels, they do feel a bit odd on the skin at first but they dry you very well (especially hair), and they dry quickly when you hang them back up.

This is mainly due to the problem of washing and drying towels in the winter when you don't use a tumble dryer. They are so light you can fit more in your washing machine at once too.

LaurieFairyCake · 25/11/2011 15:47

Once a month for towels - I get out the shower clean and then hang it up to dry - they don't get dirty or damp ever because I er.........know how to wash myself.

Sheets every 10 days.

We've got the environment to consider

nofrikkincarbs · 25/11/2011 15:47

i use mine twice and then they go in a hot wash. Sheets are weekly, but I can get slovenly about them if we have kept them clean (you know what I mean)

MrsHoarder · 25/11/2011 15:47

I think my towel was last washed two weeks ago. My excuse is that they dry quickly in the (window open, fan on) bathroom, even at this time of year and the amount of washing we have is already making the house damp without adding extra towels. It'll get washed when either I notice a mark on it or as soon as it smells musty. DH's goes longer because I don't handle that to notice it getting musty, but that's his call.

It does go in a 90 wash though, but that's as much to clean the machine as the towels.

Jacaqueen · 25/11/2011 15:48

Hand towels from kitchen, wc and bathrooms get changed everyday.
Tea towels, face cloths and dish cloths get changed 2/3 times per day.
Bath towels get changed after each use.

Always washed at 60.

I have a large linen cupboard and lots of towels.

sevenbubbles · 25/11/2011 15:48

Get0rf I agree about sheets. We sleep in nude and I think the bed is grim after 2 days. I don't necessarily change it thoughBlush. In fact I'm going upstairs to strip it now - you have spurred me into action ....

picnicbasketcase · 25/11/2011 15:51

Just realised I don't really know how often I wash towels - whenever I think they've been used a couple of times or they feel a bit too damp to just dry and use again.

Beds are changed whenever I remember to do them and it seems like long enough, probably every ten days or so Confused

Get0rf · 25/11/2011 15:51

Grin you are the ONLY PERSON on mumsnet who has ever agreed with me re sheets, everyone else (inclduong my family) thinks I am nuts.

I don't tumble dry things, btw. I am lucky enough to have a room full of airers, so things generally get hung to dry.

sevenbubbles · 25/11/2011 15:51

Mildlynarkypuffin - I want to be your friend. I am sat here thinking about where I could put the extra machine and giant dryerGrin

Bellavita · 25/11/2011 15:53

Peacypops, we have lots of towels for guests to use which I would put in the guest bedroom for them. But we all have our own towel... Colour coded... Mine is pink...no one else in the house would use mine and I would not use theirs. DH has a cream one, DS1's is light blue and DS2 has a darker blue.

Teeb · 25/11/2011 15:53

Gosh, it's like a whole new world. I've always washed towels after each use, go through 2/3 tea towels a day too, and bedding gets done twice a week.

Although my washing machine is on between 4/7 times a day.

valiumredhead · 25/11/2011 15:54

Ha ha ha OP, even I wash my towels once a week at least Grin
You have a new baby in the house though, I'm impressed you are managing to do anything but feed and burp!

HeraldAngelSinging · 25/11/2011 15:54

I expect someone has suggested that it depends on how often you have a bath or shower.

NaughtyBusterAndTheBumFactory · 25/11/2011 15:54

But it's your own naked body in bed? Surely with all your showering and clean towels you can't be that 'skanky'?

I clean ours every 2 weeks, sometimes more. Although i'd quite happily lie in the wet patch all night. A strangers naked body, then yes, I'd want them changed every day!

upahill · 25/11/2011 15:55

We get through 3 bath sheets daily!!
My washing machine is never off!!

NaughtyBusterAndTheBumFactory · 25/11/2011 15:55

7 times a day Shock

Get0rf · 25/11/2011 15:56

No, but you sweat don't you. I wouldn't wear the same t shirt for a week, hence the sheet changing.

If we wore pyjamas I expect I wouldn't change the sheets as much.

boohoobabywho · 25/11/2011 15:56

I'm horrified. When i was a kid one towel did the whole familiy and then was put on the raditor to dry... YUK YUK YUK

we have a cupboard full of towels. we use one after a bath and put it straight in the wash. we have a fresh hand towel in the bathroom, that gets changed for a fresh one every day.

I do a huge boil wash every week and love to see my lovely fresh tiles blowing on the washing line.

Get0rf · 25/11/2011 15:57

I do about 3 washes a day - one in the morning before I go to work, one in the evening, one overnight.

DP's clothes get filthy at work, and DD does a load of sport, plus sheets and towels.

Lexie1970 · 25/11/2011 15:57

Sorry sitting here cringing at roughly once a month :(

Our towels and bath mats go in once a week, DS4 bedding goes in once a week. guest bedding changed on departure of said guest and our bedding used to be once a fortnight but dp complained big time so now about 10 days or so. All gets washed at 60

LaurieFairyCake · 25/11/2011 15:58

7 washes a day Shock

have you heard of climate change ?????????????????????

MildlyNarkyPuffin · 25/11/2011 15:58

I understand the daily washing if you sleep naked.

Could you not both wear some pants and stretch it to 3/4 days?
