to only wash bath towels once a month?

or less Blush

DH is in charge of washing his own towel and I am sure he never puts it in the wash more often than once every 2 or 3 months...

DS's goes in about once every 2 months (but it barely touches him as he likes to run around naked pretending to be a train driver straight after his bath, which dries him quite effectively).

I usually wash mine about every month but have realised that I haven't washed it since coming home from hospital with DD, who is now 5 weeks...in my defence, there is one HECK of a lot of other washing to do and it just won't ever fit in the machine....

We do wash out clothes (!) and sheets once a week. And I do the kitchen hand towel every week or two - it gets quite grubby and also fits in the machine with another wash easily.

But are we grim and disgusting when it comes to bath towels? How often do normal people wash bath towels?

OP posts:
schroeder · 25/11/2011 15:19

I just wash em when they seem smelly, no idea how often.

kitsmummy · 25/11/2011 15:20

LRDthefeminist if you actually read my post properly you'll notice that I was suggesting that someone "you or him" put the towels in together - it seemed like a complete waste of effort to have two people washing towels seperately.

But anyway, starkadder has now clarified that she meant he puts his own towel out to be washed, not that he does it himself seperately, so it's not really relevant.

starsandstripes · 25/11/2011 15:20

That is very skankyGrin

I wash ours daily or every 3 days at the very most! I hate damp towels so now the heated towel rail is on it's not so bad so i'll stretch to 3 days.

I do about 2,3 washes a day often one of them is just towels and tea towels.

I think I get through about 3 tea towels a day!!

Bed linen I am more slack on and that's about every two weeks sometimes 3 for the boys who are only little and have two baths a day.

Pudden · 25/11/2011 15:21

bath towels changed twice a week hand towels daily. Owt else is just :o)

LRDtheFeministDragon · 25/11/2011 15:23

kits - I think you didn't read my post properly, actually.

If you read it again you'll notice I suggest that I wouldn't want my DH being responsible for washing my towl if he only thinks it needs doing ever 2-3 months, so realistically the OP would always be the one doing the work in your scenario.

naturalbaby · 25/11/2011 15:24

how do your towels not smell? mine do after a few days on a heated towel rail.

i think it's recommended to wash the kitchen one every day.

6weeks of lochia but no milk spraying tingle. so glad i've had no af since starting new contraception.

in pil's bathroom there are 2 towel rails across the bathroom with several towels on. i never know which one is supposed to be the guest hand towel!

spartafc · 25/11/2011 15:25

Bath towels once a week and hand towels maybe every 3-4 days. Bedding weekly and tea towels every other day. How often do people wash their pyjamas? I got into the habit of every day after having DS and experiencing the whole new world of leaky boobs. I do wonder now if that's excessive though...

Naoko · 25/11/2011 15:26

Well. I've finally broken my habit of having a clean towel every day (which is how it is in my parents' house, until I got to uni with 12 towels and got a lot of funny looks I assumed that's what everyone did....), which was probably unnecessary, but I don't think I could go that long without washing them. They'd go musty, if nothing else. And tea towels...just no. I'm sorry, I'm trying really hard not to be judgy here, but two weeks? If I left mine more than a day or two, three they'd be so skanky they'd not actually absorb any water...

Buy some extra towels and tea towels and run a hot wash of just towels and tea towels once or twice a week. It's good for your washing machine, too.

PaintYouByNumbers · 25/11/2011 15:26

well they are used to dry your CLEAN body, so I am not completely anal about them and if im desperate ill use one twice but not if its been chucked straight on the floor. lol

mummakaz · 25/11/2011 15:28

I think that's minging op Grin

I wash my towels every other day as I have psoriasis and is a bit flaky atm. Tea towels every other day too

kitsmummy · 25/11/2011 15:28

LRD yeah ok, if you say so dear.

eurochick · 25/11/2011 15:29

Tea towels don't get that dirty if you have a dishwasher and so don't really wash up more than the odd bit here and there. I certainly don't do mine every day. I think you have to get a balance between cleanliness and enviromental friendliness.

fuzzynavel · 25/11/2011 15:31

skanky vote here.

Bedsheets once a week.
Towels - once a week or if I see they're dirty then before that.
Teetowels - as often as needed, usually clean every day or at the outside every other day.

LRDtheFeministDragon · 25/11/2011 15:31

Confused Didn't really think I was saying anything controversial there ...

Get0rf · 25/11/2011 15:33

Oh dear - that is a bit skanky OP Grin

Mind you I am on the opposite end of the scale. My towels get used pretty much after each use. We don't have our own towels, just get a clean one from the cupboard, and throw in the wash after use.

Gosh I thought I was on the skanky side using a bath towel for a week. In my defence I do hang it to dry properly after use.

Kitchen towels and tea towels and handtowels should be changed daily IMHO and in my house they are.

Ewww I hate using the loo in someone's house and going to wash and dry my hands only to find a grubby, damp handtowel to dry them on.

Get0rf · 25/11/2011 15:33

Plus - I like crunchy towels. They lose the stiffness and crunch once they are used.

Get0rf · 25/11/2011 15:34

Haha bedsheets - every day in summer, every other day in winter.

TingleJuice · 25/11/2011 15:35

naturalbaby Just me then with my spraying boobs! Although those times are thankfully a distant memory now.Smile

Sirzy · 25/11/2011 15:35

Clean towels after each bath/shower, clean hand towel every other day at least. Kitchen towels I can easily use 2 or 3 a day

ChunkyMonkeyMother · 25/11/2011 15:38

I use a clean towel a week but I only get chance to have 3 showers and one bath a week - I have a body one and a hair one, they get washed after the week of using them.

DS uses his towels twice but he baths daily so he uses about 3 sometimes 4 a week but that is going to decrease soon as he is growing out of small towels and I sure as hell am not going to be out buying him 17 big towels to replace smaller ones!

When I first met DH he insisted on using a clean towel every time! You can tell he lived with his ever obliging mother who used to clear up and clean after him! Now he uses 2 a week but he also showers daily (What a bloody luxury)

As for bedding, DS gets clean ones every 2 weeks and ours is usually 2 to 3 weeks - Actually depends on when I remember ha ha

I only have time to do washing once a week but have started to wash things like towels all together in one wash mid week - It does help quite a bit although I feel like the washing machine is on constantly and I do forget them regularly so I end up with stinking washing that needs rewashing!

MildlyNarkyPuffin · 25/11/2011 15:38

Skanky.

Sheets once a week.
Towels twice a week.
Kitchen towels twice a week (we use a dishwasher)

When you shower you don't wipe out bacteria on your body. You reduce it to much lower levels. When you dry off you transfer it to the towel along with sloughed skin cells. After two weeks ...

sevenbubbles · 25/11/2011 15:40

Gross. I wash ours daily at 60. Never ever more than 2 days The washing drives me crazy to be honest but I think even weekly is grim.

Have been known to have different towel in the evening!

AbbyAbsinthe · 25/11/2011 15:41
