Builders have left house secured only by a tarpaulin. AIBU to be freaking out?

We live in London and are having a rear extension built. Big hole at back of house where sliding door will fit. DH has just got home and seen that where the hole was previously covered by plywood, screwed into a frame, now there is only tarpaulin, tucked in but light shines through so obvious from house that there is nothing else between in and out.

Surely this is not adequate security? The tarp could easily be sliced through...our DD is on the first floor while we and DD2 are on top floor. If burgled our insurance would not be valid.

Am I unreasonable to be freaking out?

Just be glad you're not in the NorthWest, it's blowing a gale here! You would have no tarpaulin to worry about!

I don't really know the answer to your question as surely they can't screw plywood up every day?

Well, you will need your own very old fashioned creative and noisy burgler alarm. Think stuff hanging from the ceiling. Pots with gravel, etc.

Threads to stumble in.

You must booby trap the whole room.

They have screwed plywood up each day til now - only took them 5 mins with power screwdrivers. We were burgled last year so nervous.

Booby trapping is a good idea

Surely screwing in plywood would be no good if there was a fire you'd not be able to get out the back.

Kitsilano · 24/11/2011 21:34

Well we have a separate front and back door as well as the opening so hadn't really worried about that. Maybe we are overreacting

Well tell them tomorrow to reinstate the plywood. And make your dh sleep on the floor downstairs tonight. Grin

Tempting...!

no way would i be happy with that, I take it you will be having talks with them tomorrow?

Rhubarbgarden · 24/11/2011 22:28

Our builders did that. Made me very nervous too. I was also convinced that foxes would get in and wee everywhere. They didn't.
