...to think it's not polite to chase someone up for not "opening" an online advent calendar?

I have received an email from a friend which reads: "x has sent you an iline advent calendar, please click here to download your calendar".

I did click, but you need Flash to read the blummin' thing so I just exited the page and forgot about it.

My friend can obviously track whonhas downloaded the thing and who has notnas tonight I got an email from her chasing me up about it.

AIBU to think that (a) it's not even Dec 1st yet so chasing me uo is a bit premature and (b) it's bloody cheeky to harrass people about crappy online advent calendars anyway.

AIBU?

I usually do like a bit of advent calendar chocolate....but online? Ha!

YANBU. I would sharp dump anyone who thought it a top idea to involve me in such cyber-insanity!

Said friend has form for this kind of stuff.
She sent me an online birthday card last year, again youmhad to open it and watch a labrador dog run about doing something before he rushed up and yelped happy birthday or some such.
I deleted without opening OR watching it and again, she followed up and said she had noticed I had not completed the download.
I made some excuse about not having seen her email but she was not out off and resent it........

She sounds under the impression you'll set your alarm a bit earlier in the morning so you can get the computer on to find out what that days picture is?

25 times??

hahaha Grin

What are you going to say back?

Insomnia11 · 24/11/2011 19:41

I think it's a bit rude to delete a birthday card but definitely ok to ignore an advent calendar.

Goodynuff · 24/11/2011 19:44

Why not just say to avoid malware, you aren't adding anything?

Goodynuff · 24/11/2011 19:45

perhaps she needs a hobby too, if she has time to cyber stalk you Grin

maybe suggest making greeting cards or calanders?

Greythorne · 24/11/2011 19:48

Insomnia
Thing is, I did open the email from her for my birthday, but then you have to click a link and then load some programme which shows you some cute fiml / animation. So I did open her email but then deleted it without opening the link.

I never open online greetings cards - well, I never get them any more Grin - people soon get the message! I hate that kind of thing - it's up there with sending Christmas greetings by text. Loathsome!

Pandemoniaa · 24/11/2011 19:57

I'm not paranoid but I won't, on principle, open things that require me to load a programme that isn't already on the considerable list of multimedia applications that this iMac runs. In fact I don't like being forced to load anything, really.

So no. YANBU in not opening this advent calendar and your friend is exceptionally unreasonable in chasing you up about the sodding thing. However, I've (politely) let my position on these things be known so anyone sending them does so at the distinct risk of it remaining unopened. Perhaps you should say similarly to your friend so there's no danger of misunderstanding in future.

some of them carry undesirable trojans and advertising stuff.

I used to get some quite funny ones but had to run the Internet Security package afterwards to clean up whatever it left behind.

If the package is able to report back to her in some way that you have read it, it sounds rather undesirable to me.

If you could be bothered to reply, you could tell her your internet security warned that it carried an unsafe exec.

Firawla · 24/11/2011 20:20

yanbu your friend is a bit rude to be so pushy with it

proudfoot · 24/11/2011 20:26

YANBU - is it some sort of competition where she gets more entries if you click it?!
