...to be fucking Horrified that my neighbour Killed His Dog??

ahhyesiseeyouvepooedonyourfoot · 23/11/2011 22:21

Was chatting to our next door neighbour who is ok (I thought), in his late 40's with a lovely family and his own consultancy business. He mentioned that his dog was incontinent and probably dying and how sad his daughters were about it, all innocently I said 'Ahh thats sad when will you be taking him to vets' he said 'I'm not paying any bluddy vets I'll take him out and shoot him' (he does have guns for hunting)...cue stuttering WTFS??? from me..

He was quite indignant and said 'With our last dog me and a friend took him to a forest and injected him with ketamine, he went straight to sleep its EXACTLY what the vet would do'
I said I'm pretty sure it WASN'T exactly what the vets did and bluffed a bit about knowing they used a cocktail of drugs for different things - which in fact don't know - can any vets confirm for me?

Anyway I asked him to leave my house, I wasnt being all 'PC gorn mad' was I??

Jooly, really? I have never heard anyone experienced say animals lead to slaughter don't know the fear, unless they are apologists. They can smell their comrades spilt blood, hear their cries. Absolutely unbelievable to me that they don't know sheer terror on their way to have their throats slit.

See here:

candytuft63 · 25/11/2011 22:48

sorry i see you said "little fear" No sign of that in my experience -just terror. They can smell the blood.

candytuft63 · 25/11/2011 23:00

All gone quiet now nohun... everyone is watching your link.

NoHunIntended · 25/11/2011 23:04

I doubt it will change most of their minds though, candy. Unless they can domesticate it, people seem to turn a blind eye to animal suffering.

Joolyjoolyjoo · 25/11/2011 23:11

What can I say? That wasn't my experience. Maybe the abattoir I attended was better managed. As for the video with one cow in the race- that isn't the way I've seen it. That cow was left alone in a race, which would make it unsure, as they are herding animals. I've never seen it done that way.

Having had cattle in a race for TB testing/ brucella testing/ dehorning, I don't agree that they know they are going to die, but they don't always like it. Cattle are put in a race/ crush for all sorts of procedures- it's not necessarily something they are not used to. I don't really agree that they smell the blood- I have seen cattle converged around an animal that has died/ been shot for humane reasons. they are naturally curious beasts. I am not saying that you didn't witness terror, but I never did. That is just my experience. I would not lie, as I have no real issue with people who disagree. I am ok with my own decisions to eat meat (I'm not an apologist- I don't feel I have anything to apologise for), and I am happy for others to have their own opinions

Those cows would be shot in the head with a captive bolt(and completely unconcious) before having their throats slit. Find it strange that lots of people here think it is ok to shoot a dog in the head, but a cow would "know" and therefore it is cruel... So a cow would know, but a dog wouldn't? Make up your minds!

NoHunIntended · 25/11/2011 23:23

That is just one video. There are many many more, different ways, all hideous.

I never ever will understand how a so-called animal lover can eat meat.

I haven't said it is ok to shoot a dog. I said it is no different to shooting any animal, yet people here care for a dog, but not a cow.

The point is, you all think the neighbour is a cruel barbaric man. You judge him. He is ok about his choices.
I think anyone who eats meat and dairy is cruel and barbaric, unless their lives depended on it. I judge you. You are ok about your choices.
Neighbour has drawn his line about what is morally acceptable, you've drawn yours, I've drawn mine.

thunderboltsandlightning · 25/11/2011 23:24

I agree that this is some kind of penis driven ego trip.

There's a reason why people who love their animals take them to the vets if they need to be put down. Because it's the humane thing to do.

Also it's going to do horrible things to his relationship with his daughters if they know that daddy shot their pet.

Joolyjoolyjoo · 25/11/2011 23:33

Fair, enough, NoHun. I have been a farm vet, and worked with meat and dairy production beasts, and I am ok with you judging me. I do make my own decisions, based on my real-life experiences.

That doesn't mean I can't be a bit Hmm about a guy who has said he can
a) acquire Class A controlled drugs to inject (how?) into his dog
b) shoot said dog because he thinks it's the best option, despite the fact is is not legal.

You can have whatever opinion you want on meat production, but it is controlled by legislation and is legal. This guy, otoh, is acting well without the realms of legality and the Animal Welfare Act. The line has to be drawn somewhere, and I would draw it there. just my opinion

ExitPursuedByaBear · 25/11/2011 23:41

All the people who say their dogs are scared of the vet - you can always get the vet to come to your house to do the deed, causing your pet as little distress as possible.

spiderpig8 · 26/11/2011 14:24

Killing an animal isn't legal? Since when? What about fishing, mouse traps wringing chicken and gamebirds necks?

valiumredhead · 26/11/2011 14:37

My dh hit a deer last year driving along a dark lane - had to finish it off by breaking its neck. It had to be done though and would've been worse to leave it.

spiderpig8 · 26/11/2011 14:45

Valium -DH had the same scenario a few weeks ago -he didn't hit the deer but came across it very badly injred by the side of the road near our house.

valiumredhead · 26/11/2011 14:49

spider the rd he was coming down is pitch black at night and really horrible to drive down. Luckily for dh there was a police car behind dh's and they saw what had happened and they told him there was no way he could've stopped in time, which made him feel a bit better about the whole thing.

ragged · 26/11/2011 14:54

Or shooting foxes and rabbits, or poisoning mice or gleefully smashing the heads of wild rats in with the back of a shovel. All quite legal.

What if he mis-fires the gun or doesn't aim correctly?
Vets can fuck up too, inject too much, too little, inject in wrong place.

I'm not Vegan myself, but I agree with NoHun about having perspective, if you drink cow's milk you participate in far crueler practices than one man disposing of his dog with a single gunshot.

It costs 50 quid to euthanise a pet rat -- a rat! I shudder to think what it costs to put down a dog. If I thought I could confidently dispatch a pet quickly with a gunshot I'd do it too. The only part in the story that troubles me is whether he sought good vet advice about treatment options before killing.

ninah · 26/11/2011 14:56

I don't really see a problem provided it was done quickly
natural death isn't so great either tbh

valiumredhead · 26/11/2011 14:59

Thank you for pointing that out and putting it into perspective!

Exactly! I snorted when the poster up thread said if your animal doesn't like the vet's have them come out for a home visit!

valiumredhead · 26/11/2011 15:00

I agree ninah

I keep rats and have done for years, it costs £6.50 at my vets, I always feel it is too liitle for a dignified end to a life, but that's by the by, you are being seriously ripped off.

valiumredhead · 26/11/2011 15:08

I can't imagine anything costing £6.50 at my vet's!

4madboys · 26/11/2011 15:21

i think if the dog is needing to be put down then there is nothing intrinsically wrong in the owner shooting it himself.

when i was little we lived in cyprus there were LOTS of cats, they are not viewed as pets over there and many were mistreated, ill, injured etc i know that before we left a cat had kittens and died in the process, my dad killed all the kittens (they would have starved to death otherwise) he hit each one over the back of the head with a shovel to break their necks, it was a quick death and much better than the alternative.

my dad and dp have both stopped and killed an injured animal in the road to put it out of its misery as well. its not very nice, but better for the animal.

ragged · 26/11/2011 15:43

I paid about 6.50 for injected painkillers on one of my rats; they were good enough to bill me not on the day of injection, but a week later, and 3 days after she died (sigh).

I thought when I read a poll on Fancyrats that all of the charges for procedures at our vet were pretty darn typical, which vet surgery do you attend, Gobblers?

I just don't keep rats any more. And let my mice die after lingering & suffering (although local breeder will smash their heads in if I ask nicely). 50+ quid charged by vet to give GA to a friend's mouse that had an eye infection, so that it could be examined properly, so I presume euthanised fancy mouse will cost not much less.

Just asking the vet's opinion means spending 30 quid; that's before any treatment. Yes yes, I know, they went to Uni for 9 years, this is why we don't keep pets any more (although I am trying to psyche myself up to spend a stupid amount on a cat soon).

I used to live with farmers and they'd just thump hard on a (wild) baby rabbit's head hard too, given half a chance. As humane as any option they had.

GobblersKnob · 26/11/2011 15:47

Oh I am on Fancyrats too

No idea if it is typical, is a very good practice though.

cazboldy · 26/11/2011 17:18

can i ask what you think is cruel about drinking cows milk ragged?

mousymouse · 26/11/2011 17:24

cows need to have a calf every year or they won't give milk.
so that is a lot of veal/beef as a by-product of producing milk.

SucksToBeMe · 26/11/2011 17:42

It happens every day in the travelling comunity. A fact which i can sadly back up with many examples.
