Booked my cat in to be neutered today. The receptionist told me I had to bring him in before 9. I explained about the school run and how I wouldn't be able to get there until slightly after 9, she insisted I had to be there before 9 so the vets could start operating. OK I thought, fair enough. DH took morning off work so he could drop the kids at school while I go to the vets.

So I drive like a maniac to get to the vets before 9, loads of traffic but just make it. Run into the vets with the cat and explain he's got an appointment to be neutered. Receptionist gets me to sign a form, tells me to ring after 3 to check how he is. I get ready to hand cat over and leave. She then tells me I have to wait to see the vet. I look round the room and see about 9 people also waiting. I ask why I need to see the vet when my cat saw him last week for his jabs and a health check. I get told the vet needs to do a pre-operative assessment.

1 hour later, after sitting in the waiting room with an increasingly distressed cat I get called in to see the vet. The vet puts a name tag round cat's neck and tells me to ring after 3 to see how he is. AND THAT IS IT.

I ask when my cat will have his op, the vet says she has no idea it depends on whether emergencies come in etc and they operate until 9pm.

So why the hell did I have to drop him off before 9 to then sit in a waiting room for an hour when my cat might not be operated until 9pm.

AIBU to be pissed off? I have better things to do with my time than sit around a waiting room for an hour as does DH who took a morning off work so he could drop the kids off.

It's because their time is valuable, and your time has no value whatsoever. Did they not mention that?

After the cat has been dealt with, and you are feeling better, you could write a brief letter expressing your opinion.

Some hospitals claim that "block bookings" have been stopped, they appear not to know that the receptionists are still doing it.
