Hi, The brakes on my car are not well....
We went to trafford centre yesterday and broke down on way there, got recovered to a garage who replaced the front pads. Happily went on our way.
On way home brakes seized up, the front caliper had locked so car was very very slow and unresponsove. Got recovered, again, and this time we went on a low loader home.

Car has gone into garage today......I'm worried sick about the expense, at this time of year inparticular

I can affiord, if need be, upto about £4-500, its a honda crv, anyone think it will be more???

The back brakes need doing too, btw, possibly new brake shoes there.

sob sob

That car is my baby...bought it with the compo i got from the hospital when they ruined my fucking life messed up with my treatment for cancer

Don't know, but have a look on a Honda chat website. Believe it or not, there are lots of men people out there who chat about their cars. Whenever, I have a problem with my car I always check the relevant site out to make sure I am not about to be ripped off by the garage because I am a clueless woman--

Andrewofgg · 22/11/2011 11:58

OP please don't take advice from this or any other site about something as life-critical about the brakes on your car. Please!

StaceymAloneForver · 22/11/2011 12:00

andrew i think she's just asking for advice on price

nickelbabe · 22/11/2011 12:06

It does sound like the garage didn't do the job right in the first place - if they replaced the pads and then the calipers locked, that sounds like they mucked it up.
You should get at least a discount on the cost if you went to the same garage.

It shouldn't cost more than £400, i shouldn't think.
(but if it does, they migth let you pay in instalments if it's a small garage)

AMumInScotland · 22/11/2011 12:08

I recently paid £225 for front brake disks and pads to be replaced, plus another £61 to have the back ones stripped and cleaned. That was for a Corolla.

So if you need disks and pads both front and back, I'd guess it'll be most of your £4-500 I'm afraid, but probably not beyond that, unless there's something else needing done too.

HTH

It's just advice on the likely price the OP is asking about!

icooksocks · 22/11/2011 12:14

£400-500 for brakes Shock Shock my god your being ripped off.

I'm so grateful my DH can do all that malarkey.

But yes, the first garage is responsible here-and I would be taking the bill for the front brakes to them as they have clearly messed up big time, if there is a problem with the calipers they should have mentioned-as they WOULD have known.

bigbrownmincepies · 22/11/2011 20:00

HI, thanks for all the replies.
icooksocks...the first garage replaced the front pads, and the off side front caliper locked, but he freed it (said it was airlock), but as i said, later on that day it locked again.

Anyway. heard nothing from the garage today,so i will be awake all night worrying!
Andrew, yes just asking for ideas of price....I know its not life or death

Ok I will admit it has been a long long LONG time since I got under a car or in anyway fiddled with the brakes, however...........

The brakes are supposed to be a hydraulic system. There is not supposed to be any air in there!!!! If there is air in there the garage either did not bleed them correctly to get it all out properly or there is something not tightened/sealed properly and air is getting into the system!

Like I said been a long time!

ShellyBoobs · 22/11/2011 20:47

£400-500 for brakes my god your being ripped off.

It depends on the car, though. I had a car a few years ago where it cost over £500 just for the front brake pads and discs without fitting them; AND it was only a VW Golf.

Before anyone says I was robbed, my OH is very much into cars and motorbikes, GRRRR and he called loads of places for prices before getting the parts and fitting them.

ShellyBoobs · 22/11/2011 20:51

Sorry, OP. My post wasn't very helpful!

I don't think it would be easy for anyone here to guess at the price because we don't know what the cause of the problem is and parts prices vary hugely between cars. The parts could turn out to be really cheap for yours!

bigbrownmincepies · 23/11/2011 12:15

Again I thank you all, i just want my baby car back

Everything seems ok,garage said brake fluid was like jelly(!) and they'll change that, but they'd forgotten about front caliper so are looking at that now, but seem to think the first garage are definatloe at fault for fixing new pads incorrectly.
