To think carrying out a full body scrub in a communal shower is a bit disgusting

So I went to the gym today, had a bit of a run then for a swim. The changing rooms for the pool are open plan with about 8 showers. I went for a shower before going into the pool and there was a women in there carrying out an all over body exfoliation, I arrived just in time to witness her paying close attention to her bikini line.

AIBU in thinking this is really an activity that should be saved for your own shower? Or is it acceptable to remove a layer of your skin in a public shower?

I think YWBU to be looking at her bikini line.

I don't really think it is that bad. Not something I would do, but then I want to be out of a communal shower asap.

Flanelle · 19/11/2011 19:03

You mean, kind of gritty exfoliant stuff all over the floor kind of thing? Or just, you wonder how she could be bothered?

VivaLeBeaver · 19/11/2011 19:04

Surely any skin and gritty stuff goes down the plughole?

MissPenteuth · 19/11/2011 19:04

Not sure about disgusting; even a normal shower will probably wash away some dead skin, along with the usual sweat, hair, other boily secretions.. But personally if I'm showering at the gym I'm in and out as quickly as possible. I couldn't be arsed with scrubbing or anything else bar shampoo and shower gel.

Maybe she was going out somewhere straight from the gym and didn't have time to do her pampering routine at home?

MissPenteuth · 19/11/2011 19:04

Oops, boily should read bodily. Boily secretions would be worse. I think.

worraliberty · 19/11/2011 19:05

I can't say I've ever stared at anyone in a shower...let alone long enough to know they've exfoliated their entire body.

thefurryone · 19/11/2011 19:06

I didn't look on purpose it was hard to miss given where she was standing and the size of the shower area.

OP posts:
Flanelle · 19/11/2011 19:08

VLB, someties gritty stuff doesn't go down the plughole very efficiently, and could potentially be a nuisance. I wondered if it were that, or if the OP just was experiencing a failure to MHOB.

ImperialBlether · 19/11/2011 19:08

What exactly did you think was wrong with that, OP?

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 19/11/2011 19:09

It could be worse - there was a hilarious thread here a couple of years ago where a mumsnetter related seeing a woman blow-drying her pubes at the gym - one foot up on the stool!

HeresTheThingBooyhoo · 19/11/2011 19:12

YABU. i shower with a body puff, that is abrasive enough to removed dead skin cells the same as a body scrub and i sure as hell am not going to stop doing that. it isn't disgusting, the water washed everything donw the plug hole.

LynetteScavo · 19/11/2011 19:15

YANBU.

People seem to forget they are not at home when they are at the gym.

The gym I used to go to men were not allowed to shave in the shower. They never mentioned women.

thefurryone · 19/11/2011 19:17

MHOB?

I just wondered if this was seen as acceptable behaviour, I guess I'm alone in my slight ick factor.

OP posts:
Fuzzywuzzywozabear · 19/11/2011 19:18

We have signs in the ladies showers not to shave

nailak · 19/11/2011 19:19

do people not exfoliate every time they shower then?

i suppose it depends on skin type etc...

thefurryone · 19/11/2011 19:19

Not sure if I thought it was wring exactly, more slightly unnecessary, in a shared shower area.

OP posts:
thefurryone · 19/11/2011 19:21

Wrong even.

YANBU OP - communal showers are quick wash and out, dry, dress and bugger off. I felt the same about the woman applying moisturiser t'other day. Naked, bent over, with her bum and bits towards the door. I wasn't looking but it was all I saw as I wandered in from my swim. Put me off lunch!

HeresTheThingBooyhoo · 19/11/2011 19:40

it amazes me the number of people who use communal changing facilities and are surprised to see naked people there. similarly, communal showers and surprised to see people, er...showering.

seeker · 19/11/2011 19:44

Right. Things I didn't know and hqve been getting wrongball my life.

It is unacceptable to poo anywhere but in your own loo at home.

It is unacceptabl to wash in q communal shower.

DoMeDon · 19/11/2011 19:46

I do think there's a difference. Naked people, washers, pooers honestly don;t phase me. It's the ones who make a meal out of it. Maybe they are frustrated naturists and are just reliching a bit of naked air time Grin

Misschief101 · 19/11/2011 19:47

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius that's made me laugh so much! Who cares what other people do ffs. It isn't disgusting her washing and scrubbing her body. If you had said she did a shit n the shower then that would be disgusting.

Tee2072 · 19/11/2011 19:48

I wouldn't think it would be necessary to exfoliate every time you shower. Sounds damaging to the skin, actually.

I certainly wouldn't do it at the gym.

HeresTheThingBooyhoo · 19/11/2011 19:50

i think some people dont have the hang ups about nakedness that others have. true there may be an element of exhibitionsim with some people or some genuinely prefer to be naked but i doubt that's the case with all the extended nakedness people Grin

Flanelle · 19/11/2011 19:52

Mind Her Own Business. As for "disgusting" and "unacceptable" ... that's just absurd!
