If your daughter wanted to be a television journalist, squeakytoy, would you be happy for her to be considered over the hill when she's 35? .

bringmesunshine2009 · 19/11/2011 11:06

Sian looks like lollipop. I feel a bit freaked out by her first thing of a morning.

ebbandflow · 19/11/2011 11:08

OP I wondered exactly the same, they also seemed a similar size and look. The only non eye candy newsreader I can think of is Kirsty Wark and I actually find her more interesting to look at that all of these stick thin ones.

ExitPursuedByaBear · 19/11/2011 11:12

TV puts weight on people though, so probably they are pretty thin. Agree re Sian's head.

Clossaintjacques · 19/11/2011 11:13

They may have looked a size 10 on the TV but they are MUCH smaller than that, I have seen Sian in real life and she looks too slim in my view.
There is huge pressure on the women to stay uber slim but not the men. I think that's wrong.

Northernlurker · 19/11/2011 11:23

Well clearly they aren't TOO slim. They hold down jobs, they have mostly had children, they had enough energy to move around the dancefloor. I think they look fine and actually it would be lovely if we could not look at their shape at all. Too fat, too thin, who cares? Good journalist, clearly explaining the news is what it should be about because we do NOT look at men in the same way we look at women.

lassylass · 19/11/2011 11:28

Skinny and attractive. No doubt achieved effortlessly.

But also smart, charismatic, ambitious and successful. They excel across the board - looking good on camera just gets you to the first interview.

I agree though...feels much better to attribute their success to the patriarchy.

seeker · 19/11/2011 11:30

As I said. So depressing that women don't see a problem here!

worraliberty · 19/11/2011 11:31

I think women seem to be more worried about other women's weight than men to be honest.

None of them were skinny...they were slim and nicely groomed imo.

abbeylockhart · 19/11/2011 11:38

That cbbc presenter kristen something did a programme a while back about how she couldnt make the transition to adult tv presenting because she wasnt sexy enough.

I despair at the world my dd is growing up in.

molly3478 · 19/11/2011 11:41

I hope I make it to Sians age with the same body. She looks amazing and she hasnt got a lollipop head she is 53 and looks great

molly3478 · 19/11/2011 11:44

Also I hate it when women say if a woman has a certain body after kids they cant eat or live on lettuce. Some women can eat what they want but they do it in moderation and lead an active lifestyle so its easy to stay slim.

lassylass · 19/11/2011 11:51

Its grossly unfair that people are judged on their looks, but that's just the way it is, and its the same for men.

Sian is 53? Ha ha - well there you go. OP - YABU.

SardineQueen · 19/11/2011 11:54

"Good journalist, clearly explaining the news is what it should be about because we do NOT look at men in the same way we look at women."

I don't really understand that comment?

PlentyOfPubeGardens · 19/11/2011 11:59

Is it bollox the same for men!

If looks are so important for men, how did Andrew Marr get his first break?

And why are the women all retired off when they reach middle age but the men get to carry on?

Northernlurker · 19/11/2011 12:01

We judge men by and large on their performance not body shape. Women get judged on both.

Northernlurker · 19/11/2011 12:02

Andrew Marr, John Simpson, John Sergeant, Jeremy Paxman......

molly3478 · 19/11/2011 12:05

Sorry got that wrong she is 47!

SardineQueen · 19/11/2011 12:06

Gotcha NL I agree

Northernlurker · 19/11/2011 12:09

Smile sorry - I know my first attempt was a crap sentence - was somewhat riled when typing Grin

worraliberty · 19/11/2011 12:11

And why are the women all retired off when they reach middle age but the men get to carry on?

I totally agree with that, it's always been very ageist.

However, these kind of threads do amuse me when people moan that women are judged on their looks and body shape....then the thread turns into people judging celebrity women's looks and body shape....

SardineQueen · 19/11/2011 12:11

There must be a lot of really talented female journalists who can't get into the line of work no matter how good they are.

I'm sure the ones who do the job currently are very good - but the fact that they have to excel not just at doing the job but looking the part is miserable.

DogStinkhorn · 19/11/2011 12:12

Kirsty wark and Sophie Raworth are both a more realistic size.

worraliberty · 19/11/2011 12:17

What does 'realistic' size actually mean Dogs? Confused

Is it unrealistic for women to be a size 10 after a certain age or after having children?
