I'm finding it more and more irritating as time goes on. I don't just shove it all into my pocket, you know.

YANBU. I'm a butterfingers at the best of times and it ends up taking me longer to sort it all out after I've dropped it all over the checkout than it would have to put it away if it had been given to me the other way around.

ThisIsANickname · 18/11/2011 15:56

It bothers me to no end. When I worked a till, I always handed the coins first and then handed the bills and receipt separately.

It takes a little extra time on the part of the cashier, but is so much easier for people to put their change away and actually cuts down waiting times.

ZeldaUpNorth · 18/11/2011 15:59

Another one who hates notes 1st. I have small hands so the coins always move about (as though to drop) if note is on the bottom. If you give me coins 1st then notes i can put them away on the move so to keep the queue flowing. The other way around and it will take an extra 30 secs or so.

Nanny0gg · 18/11/2011 15:59

I hate it too - and I also try and manoeuvre it to get them in the 'right' order.

Doesn't bother me half as much as badly-folded clothes just shoved in carrier bags though...

fluffyanimal · 18/11/2011 16:06

I hate it too, especially if my other hand is full of shopping bags/children. I was also once told by a disabled person that it is harder for people with various disabilities (e.g. motor abilities, sight).
Nobody's blaming the till staff particularly by the way, as they are just doing what in general they are trained to do. But if it is an issue for disabled people then retailers should be changing their practice and training their staff accordingly.

The worst way to pay/be paid in a shop is when cash is plonked on the counter, and the recipient has to scrabble around trying to pick up the coins. Put it in the person's hand please! :)

WhataTreat · 18/11/2011 17:14

YANBU this really annoys me, I end up dropping the change everywhere! When I worked in a shop I always handed the coins first, and then the notes into spare fingers!

BleurghUna · 18/11/2011 17:19

I'm with you OP! They should count out the change. Coins first, then notes. If it all comes in a pile I sometimes end up dropping the coins as they roll off the top of the pile! It probably takes longer to serve customners that way!

LadySybilPussPolham · 18/11/2011 17:19

YADNBU
I hate it in our local Tesco garage where not only are the staff surly, they slap my clubcard down on the counter, IGNORING my outstretched hand. It makes me fume every time but as yet I've wimped out of saying something.

southeastastra · 18/11/2011 17:22

boots is the best, you get your notes, then receipts (usually very long) then your club card, then another voucher type thing, then your coins.

edwardcullensotherwoman · 18/11/2011 17:26

YANBU I hate this, especially when the counter is almost as tall as you so your hand is at shoulder height to get change (manoeuvering it back down to purse height always means I drop the change) or in a certain greetings card shop where there's about 3 feet of crap stock between you and the counter, thus meaning your arm is fully outstretched to receive change.

Much better to have change in hand, notes into thumb and forefinger and receipt in bag. Don't think I'd be able to remove my hand and say "coins first" though, that's a bit too mad Grin

Towndon · 18/11/2011 17:45

Coins on top for me. Notes on top float away!

usualsuspect · 18/11/2011 17:49

I work on a till I give coins then note ..am I doing it right?

I hate it when customers put the money on the counter though, and I have to pick it up ,put it in my hand please grrrr

KittyFane · 18/11/2011 18:27

Coins on top of note for me please!
If notes go on top when I am paying for my mcdonalds drive through there is a risk of note flying away.

Deargdoom · 18/11/2011 18:41

YADNBU. I'd like to know who started this stupid habit because it seems to be a relatively recent phenomenon. I have to clump my hand into a fist to stop the coins dropping.
Just as bad is twats who faff around with credit cards over a few quid of purchases.

Heavensmells · 18/11/2011 19:00

So after asking if you have got everything you need, asking for a loyalty card, processing your items and asking for payment which takes most people forever by the way, all at the super fast speed that keeps my employers happy I now have to worry about how I hand back change? All this being done in a polite and friendly way to many people who look down their nose at you for being a cashier. All for minimum wage. Jesus.

It bothers me!

PeelThemWithTheirMetalKnives · 18/11/2011 19:16

I can't say I had ever thought of this at all as a problem Confused. YANBU not to like it I suppose but YABU to move your hand away, say "coins first please" and keep repeating it as if the hapless cashier would have any idea of your weird obsession preference.
