to hate being given change as note(s) first and coins dumped on top?

I'm finding it more and more irritating as time goes on. I don't just shove it all into my pocket, you know.

OP posts:
Marlinspike · 18/11/2011 13:36

I used to work on Saturdays at M&S and always counted the change into thhe palm of the customer - ie if the item was £15.99 and they gave me £20, I would hand back the penny first saying "sixteen", then toe 4 £1 coins (although they would have been notes in my day - old fart emoticon!), counting 17,18,19,20. That way they customer knows the change is correct, and they can hold onto the coins whilst dealing with any notes.

I too really hate being handed a pile, notes on the bottom, and like Ktay says, there's a certain amount of slide which means an undignified scrabble at the checkout to stop losing your small change all over the floor.

SirHumphreyAppleby · 18/11/2011 13:37

Op, could you not just modify your method of putting money away, or perhaps even have 2 different methods to deal with the 2 different situations? I'm sure it would save you a lot of unnecesary stress.

LadyMontdore · 18/11/2011 13:37

YANBU. I'm so cack-handed at dealing with this situation and have to spend ages fiddling at the till causing delays and tuts.
If possible I move my hand away quickly on recieving the note, put notes in purse then wait for coins and put them in Blush

ruddynorah · 18/11/2011 13:37

Have your coin compartment open, slide coins off notes into it then you have just notes in your hand which makes it easier to put them away.

OneWaySystemBlues · 18/11/2011 13:39

In Hungary they don't give change into your hand at all. There is a little dish/tray thing at the checkout and change is put into that; you scoop it up and go. They look at you all Confused if you put your hand out for change. Or at least, that was my experience when we went there a couple of years ago.

pictish · 18/11/2011 13:39

YANBU - it is a silly way to hand over change because the coins slide about on the note and are sometimes dropped. Coins FIRST, note SECOND.

ruddynorah · 18/11/2011 13:39

You certainly wouldnt be doing all that in m&s nowadays.. there's scan speed to be thinking of Wink

notcitrus · 18/11/2011 13:42

If I had coins in my palm, my hands would be too full to hold the notes between thumb and forefinger.
All in one pile suits me just fine!

Redrubyblues · 18/11/2011 13:47

What annoys me is the 8" long receipt you get these days for a single item.

BP garages are the worst offenders.

Scholes34 · 18/11/2011 14:16

Marlin, I'm with you. In my Saturday job (in a newsagents), I had to add everything up in my head and then would count out the change in the same way, so would have removed the cash from the till in that way. Today's cashiers are doing it the other way round - they just see the amount of change registered on the till and count that out. It throws them when you offer the odd coin or two to round up the change to a note or larger coin.

SnowDin · 18/11/2011 14:27

Agree with Scholes. It is technology that's to blame for this.

There should be a little message on the till with much exact instructions for the cashier (in the manner below):

CHANGE: £5.15

FIRST - One 10p & one 5p £5 note
SECOND - £5 note

SnowDin · 18/11/2011 14:28

Obviously there would be many a thread if tills made errors like I do, but you catch my drift.

nicknamenotinuse · 18/11/2011 14:30

this is something I have never ever actually thought or worried about. I must be odd.

Kerryblue · 18/11/2011 14:35

YANBU

I hate this ALOT. I wish they would hand it to me separately.

GinSlinger · 18/11/2011 14:41

I agree with Marlinspike and that it all went wrong when we stopped counting change out to people. [old gimmer emoticon]

SixStringWidowTwankey · 18/11/2011 14:46

YANBU.

Coins first. Then Notes. Put the receipt in the bag :)

I was taught to count out the change - so that meant coins always first.

Listzilla · 18/11/2011 14:56

They do the tray thing in France, too.

I prefer the coins-on-top-of-notes way, and the receipt underneath. It's tidy and efficient and surely it's not that hard to adapt your change accepting technique to fit what most shops do?

Listzilla · 18/11/2011 14:57

Sorry, the 'that' was supposed to be in italics, not struck through. Stupid brain was too busy mentally moving coins around.

fuzzynavel · 18/11/2011 15:00

Wouldn't want to be behind you in a check out queue.

WineAndPizza · 18/11/2011 15:00

"If I can see the note(s) coming first, I move my hand away and say "Coins first, please". I usually have to repeat this at least once before it registers."

You eejit! Grin I would not be impressed if I was cashiering you.

nomoreheels · 18/11/2011 15:21

I am a lowly Christmas temp. I hope I never have to serve some of you on this thread. Uptight, much? I count change carefully & confirm what I'm giving back.

Since you all have different preferences as to how you'd like to receive your change, perhaps you should wear a sign around your neck instead of expecting very busy cashiers (who are just trying to serve everyone before there are complaints about waiting too long) to use their psychic powers.

BarkisIsWillin · 18/11/2011 15:30

Use a credit or debit card!
