One of the staff I line manage is off sick today - she called in last night. I don't work Friday mornings and am home and have just noticed that she is all over Facebook - uploading photos and commenting etc (we are friends on Facebook - she sent the request).

  1. AIBU to think this is not ok and she can't be that sick if she has FB time? (we are teachers - people are having to cover her classes)
  2. AIBU to send her a message along the lines of 'I hope you feel better soon - I love the photos you are uploading'?

Migraine? No way.

Chulita · 18/11/2011 08:23

"Flu-like symptoms and a migraine" = bit of a cold in my book if she's on FB. I've recently had flu and get migraines often enough to know that you don't want to look at a screen with either.

Definitelybeautiful · 18/11/2011 08:23

Poor you FolkGirl - keep up the MNing! But migraine (I should have said that to start with)...

OP posts:
Sirzy · 18/11/2011 08:28

She could easily have felt like she was getting a migrane last night when she called but woken up this morning without it.

I had a "flu like" bug last week and seriously expected to wake up the next morning with full blown flu but thankfully it never got to that point. Still felt awful though and wouldn't have been able to work in a school, but did play on fb a bit.

valiumredhead · 18/11/2011 08:30

YABU to think it's ok to deal with work related issues through FB.

FB is a nice distraction when you are feeling poorly. She probably used the word migraine instead of 'really bad headache' She might have the most awful period ever and not be able to leave the house and might not want to actually explain the finer details...

She has called in sick, it is not up to you to decide wether she is really sick at this stage.

squeakytoy · 18/11/2011 08:31

Headaches come and go when you have a heavy cold.

Definitelybeautiful · 18/11/2011 08:35

Ok ok ok - you guys are far too reasonable.

Btw - I just got an email from her saying she was too sick to spend time typing up cover plans and could we just 'wing it'.........

Sorry OP, but you sound like a nightmare. Not line management material at all. In fact, if you worked for me and 'busted' a member of staff on sick for being on FB, you'd be disciplined yourself.

Are you hoping for a prefect badge or some kind of promotion? If you're a line manager worth your salt, you'll keep your own counsel unless the photos are of this person doing unexpected activities whilst sick, in which case you can mention it to them directly when they return - not use a social networking site for professional monitoring and communication.

Definitelybeautiful · 18/11/2011 08:41

Thanks LyingWitch - all good points! I am a total nightmare!

I said above (maybe you missed it) that I would never actually do it - but of course my own fault for posting in AIBU.

I guess I am just frustrated at having to do the extra work myself and seeing her all over FB - wouldn't that annoying you...even a little!?

Ps - I am a GREAT manager (honest!)...if you can't vent on MN....

There is a big difference between lying in bed or on the sofa fiddling around with your phone using FB and 'proper typing.'

You sound like a nightmare to work for!

valiumredhead · 18/11/2011 08:42

Why would it annoy me that they weren't so sick they couldn't even pick up their phone? Confused

yanbu - migraine to me is struggling to get out of bed, not being well enough to feed DC, vomiting and struggling to even go to toilet - last thing I'd be doing is looking at a screen. Looks like she couldn't be arsed going to school - as line manager would wonder about her commitment when she knows others will have to cover.

Wouldn't msg her on FB though - that would be unprofessional - have it documented on her return discussion that it was noted that she was on FB whilst stating reason for illness was...
(bet she deletes you as a friend!)

belgo · 18/11/2011 08:44

I agree, with a real migraine you cannot get out of bed.

It is possible to be ill and still be on FB of course, but I think people need to be more discreet.

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 18/11/2011 08:49

OP... then be more clear in your post. Your first one said nothing about not doing it, your second one did after you read all of the responses that you weren't expecting.

Many people seem to refer to a headache as migraine. I agree that if somebody has a migraine, they really would shy away from any kind of screen because it's just too painful. However, your colleague says she has a 'flu' or whatever she said to you. Unless you are going to challenge her on a professional basis (madness), then keep quiet.

If you'd said in your OP that you were having a 'vent' about doing extra work, you'd have got my sympathy.

You sound like a bad manager gone mad with a little power given to them. You can think what you like - so will I on the basis of your post because that's all I know.

Don't blame AIBU for your posts... this isn't a bunfight, it's some people disagreeing with you.

Now... you're not posting from work, are you?

OP you posted this at ten to eight, presumably before school starts, which means that she was posting on FB in her own time?

woollyideas · 18/11/2011 08:54

YABTotallyU. I was off sick with a migraine on Wednesday. In the morning I was vomiting and light-sensitive to the extent where I could only look at the floor or lie in bed with a blindfold on. By mid afternoon, after sleeping it off all morning, I was on my laptop doing a bit of MN and FB for about an hour, before going back to sleep.

To be honest, it sounds a teeny bit like you don't like the person concerned and are looking for an opportunity to catch her out.

KellyKettle · 18/11/2011 08:54

Hanaka have you actually chopped off your thumb?

OP YABU - definitely don't do anything via FB. I would have to be at deaths door not to MN or FB when ill.

If I have a migraine I'm a waste of space for at least 24 hours afterwards - washed out, lethargic, dopey but no pain. Perhaps she's the same?

I just think you'll come off looking worse.

KellyKettle · 18/11/2011 08:56

Lots of people call a cold 'flu' too. Usually people who've never had flu.

porcamiseria · 18/11/2011 08:59

just call her in Monday and have a chat

its very ill advised to do thus as it could give the perception you are skiving

this will scare her I suspect , IF she is sciving

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 18/11/2011 09:02

Gah... thank you, Jajas... fair enough. Just as well I posted about the tongue-in-cheek thingie - sorry OP - on that point.

YANBU - Clearly NOT a migraine.

I was off on long term sick once and never posted a single thing on FB. Not once in 5 months. Too frightened of being 'caught'

You should perhaps just pull her for a chat about it. If you were my manager and did this I'd probably be quite grateful and think you were decent for not taking it further.

Disclaimer : I've had some real cowbags for managers!
