that a muffin is not a cake?

I was after something fattening, and DH was off to the shops, so I requested a "rich decadent slice of cake". He jokingly said "so carrot cake then?" and was corrected with suggestions like "black forest gateaux" and "chocolate mouse cake". He promptly returned with a double chocolate muffin and does not understand why I am miffed? AIBU

YABU. What is it then? Chopped liver?

LineRunnerSaturnalia · 17/11/2011 21:11

I think you're lucky he 'promptly returned' with anything. Smile

ramblinrose · 17/11/2011 21:12

I know what you mean.
A double chocolate muffin isn't nearly as satisfying as black fores gateaux or chocolate mousse cake.
YANBU.
But it was still really nice of him to go to the shops for you.His heart was in the right place.

It is a cake, as are fairy cakes. I agree it isn't a rich decadent slice of cake but the shop may not have done sliced cake and I suspect muffins were easier to find. Maybe by going on about a "slice" of cake he thought you wanted something individual.
Asking him to buy a large sticky cake may have got you what you wanted.

notpodd · 17/11/2011 21:22

Its the icing for me - cake must have icing. And he was sucking up to me because he is off on another business trip and feeling guilty! I wasn't mean, I just wasn't thrilled enough either :)

Ah see I'd ditch the icing, complete waste of empty calories. if I'm going to be a pig then I want it to be worth it.

DrHeleninahandcart · 17/11/2011 21:41

He needs to add some proper butter cream icing. In spades. Thus he will turn a muffin into a cake.

spiderslegs · 17/11/2011 21:42

YANBU - a muffin is a sad USA excuse for a cake.

YABU to expect your DH to know this - you have to be specific when sending DHs to the shops as any fule kno.

TidyDancer · 17/11/2011 21:44

Of course a muffin is a cake! YABU!

notpodd · 17/11/2011 21:45

I had hoped black forest gateaux and chocolate mouse cake was specific enough. Will I never learn... Clearly as cryptic as the explanations of how to get clothes in the laundry basket.

YANBU. It's a completely different baking technique if you want to get technical about it. On the upside they can be considerably lighter in calories than cake as they use very little fat in comparison, though I appreciate that wasn't exactly your objective here!

exoticfruits · 17/11/2011 21:47

YABU-of course it is cake.

MissVerinder · 17/11/2011 21:48

Is a muffin not technically a bread?

AssCants · 17/11/2011 21:49

Not sure I'd have fancied choc rodent cake.

Wink
spugglers · 17/11/2011 21:50

Well it has the calories of a cake. 532 calories in a lemon muffin from Costa, can you believe that?

notpodd · 17/11/2011 21:53

pants - after I worked so hard on spelling gateaux right...

OP posts:
notpodd · 17/11/2011 21:54

at spugglers - I know - a muffin has the same number of syns at costa's as a chocolate tiffin. I know which one I'm having...

sparkle12mar08 · 17/11/2011 21:56

No, not a bread - no yeast, and too much sugar. If you make your own you can use great ingredients. The key to defining a muffin is really in the texture and method, it's a much coarser and firmer crumb (though still moist) and results from the minimal mixing - there should still be tiny lumps of flour left. 30 seconds or twenty strokes maximum. Muffins on the high street tend to be of the cake-y variety and not really muffins at all.

OriginalPoster · 17/11/2011 21:56

Muffin is a mule, obviously...

Bethshine82 · 17/11/2011 21:59

Hmmm, I would class it as cake, subheading muffin. A derivative of the cake family. Related to cakes but not exactly a true cake.
Tricky.
They do live in the cake section in the supermarket though.

trixymalixy · 17/11/2011 22:01

Muffins are most definitely cakes!!

ChippyMinton · 17/11/2011 22:02

You asked for a slice and he bought you a whole cake.

Can you even buy a slice of cake?

sparkle12mar08 · 17/11/2011 22:02

Trixy, they really are not - see above! Completely different beast!

trixymalixy · 17/11/2011 22:05

See what?!?

If you're talking the muffins that you slice toast and butter well that's definitely bread, but a chocolate muffin uses exactly the same ingredients as a cake, so is a cake in my book!
