To be annoyed by this?

I've just popped to the shop as we needed some milk. I got a few other bits too including a piece of Stilton and a fancy bottle of whisky for my Dads Xmas present.

I will add here that I am 9 weeks pregnant.

I got to the till and the woman put everything through including the whisky but refused to sell me the Stilton as I'm pregnant! But the whisky was fine. I told her that guidelines had changed and that because Stilton is a hard cheese I can eat it. She still refused so I asked for a supervisor to come over.

She called for supervisor and they came over with the store manager too. The lady on the checkout explained what the problem was. I then said about the guidelines changing and also about how I was ok to buy the whisky. Apparently I don't look like a whisky drinker. In the end the supervisor apologised and said I was able to buy the cheese.

AIBU to be a bit annoyed at this? I imagine hormones make it seem more annoying than it probably is.

Also how did she know I was pregnant? This is DC3 but I didn't think I was showing yet.

And what does a whisky drinker look like? My Dad maybe?

Even if the guidelines hadn't changed, how would she know that you would be eating it yourself? Is it illegal to sell cheese to a pregnant woman?

Sorry, I find this hard to believe.

MumblingAndBloodyRagDoll · 17/11/2011 11:29

Please, please make a BIG cheese sarnie and pour a glass of something that looks like whisky and stand outside the shop munching and swigging! Please. You can raise your glass to the weird cashier!

hiddenhome · 17/11/2011 11:30

You should have asked for a packet of ciggies while you were on Grin

Kayzr · 17/11/2011 11:30

Well she obviously knew something I didn't as I've just thrown up after having the stilton. Sad

SardineQueen · 17/11/2011 11:31

Oh NO!

poor thing. Too ambitious, obviously. Maybe starting with an uncomplicated cheddar would have been better Sad

hiddenhome · 17/11/2011 11:33

You can't beat a nice bit of Wensleydale Wink

Kayzr · 17/11/2011 11:33

I've been fine with cheddar. I'd had a couple of days of not being sick and thought maybe morning sickness had stopped already.

A couple of cheddars a day habit eh? And you thought you were ready for teh strong stuff? Think again...!

Kayzr · 17/11/2011 11:37

I live on blue cheese when not pregnant. I was longingly looking at Danish Blue but I know I can't have that.

Please tell me I am allowed Wensleydale? We are going to the factory at Hawes next weekend.

The troll hunting on here is so tiring to read, if you don't believe it click on another thread, or report it but fgs stop accusing people.

The OP, I would be so cross!

KatieMiddIeton · 17/11/2011 11:43

Oh I'd be right cheesed off OP! How udderly unreasonable. I'd be moo-ving to another supermarket for all my shopping in future.

FellatioNelson · 17/11/2011 11:43

This can't be for real. For a start, at only 9 wks PG how could she tell? Secondly, I know the UK is a nanny state but surely, please God, tell me it hasn't gone this far? Confused

FellatioNelson · 17/11/2011 11:45

oops, have just noticed the bit at the bottom of the OP saying 'how did she know I was PG?' so sounding more pausible, in which case I am gobsmacked and appalled if this is true (and I'm still saying if)

lottiegb · 17/11/2011 11:46

I don't understand why you felt the need to justify yourself to the cashier and the manager. You are an adult. They are not your carers.

If such a thing happened to me, I'd be furious, make clear to the manager that if he/she did not apologise immediately for the cashier's nosy impertinence, I would be firing off a letter to head office pronto, complaining about the way that store is managed and proposing staff training in basic courtesy.

We went there this time last year too and got loads of great presents. I love watching them make it.

FWIW when I was around 9 wks pg I was so bloated I looked more pregnant than I am now - 18 weeks!

valiumredhead · 17/11/2011 12:30

Me too barry at 9 weeks I had a proper hard little bump and it was my first baby too!

I ate everything when I was preganant!

valiumredhead · 17/11/2011 12:30

pregnant

Kayzr · 17/11/2011 12:32

I was about 11 weeks with DS2 when I had a bump. I had better start sorting out maternity clothes.

YANBU Kayzr - ridiculous woman
WRT showing early - I was 9wks with my first (& had not told work) when I walked into a meeting and my buyer said 'Congratulations!' Blush
It does happen

nickelbabe · 17/11/2011 12:38

the only way i can think that she would know if you were PG, is if you'd signed up to the shop's baby club and she'd already swiped your reward card?
or, she just took a stab in the dark.

still, I'm not surprised you've been sick - stilton is fucking gross. (sorry about the swearing but it really does deserve a swearword)

ICanTuckMyBoobsInMyPockets · 17/11/2011 12:53

Why can they refuse to sell you anything if it's not on legal grounds ie fags or alcohol (also fireworks, knives, computer games etc)? Even if they could surely she would be doing herself out of a job and the shops reputation by refusing to sell to someone just becuase they're pregnant?
'In the end the superviser agreed'. Who are these meddlers?!
Why did she assume it was for you OP? Some people are so nosy and interfering. I would have told her I wasn't going to eat it, I was going to put it in my hair, apparently it makes it very shiny Grin!
