To be annoyed by this?

I've just popped to the shop as we needed some milk. I got a few other bits too including a piece of Stilton and a fancy bottle of whisky for my Dads Xmas present.

I will add here that I am 9 weeks pregnant.

I got to the till and the woman put everything through including the whisky but refused to sell me the Stilton as I'm pregnant! But the whisky was fine. I told her that guidelines had changed and that because Stilton is a hard cheese I can eat it. She still refused so I asked for a supervisor to come over.

She called for supervisor and they came over with the store manager too. The lady on the checkout explained what the problem was. I then said about the guidelines changing and also about how I was ok to buy the whisky. Apparently I don't look like a whisky drinker. In the end the supervisor apologised and said I was able to buy the cheese.

AIBU to be a bit annoyed at this? I imagine hormones make it seem more annoying than it probably is.

Also how did she know I was pregnant? This is DC3 but I didn't think I was showing yet.

And what does a whisky drinker look like? My Dad maybe?

If this is true, then I would have denied that I was pregnant, and acted really upset that the assistant had assumed that I was, just because I was a little 'heavy' around the middle.

I might even have squeezed a tear or two out.

Wonder what they would have said then?

Kayzr · 17/11/2011 10:42

Oh and I have been here since 2006.

so what she actually said was... "hard cheese! you can't buy it!" Wink

FionaBruise · 17/11/2011 10:44

WTF?!!!
that's hilariously awful.
Equalities Act goods and services pregnant woman characteristic discrimination

It's a big chain of supermarkets. I'm not going to do anything apart from buy Stilton somewhere else.

It just annoyed me as after a couple of days of not throwing up I wanted some Stilton on toast.

This is so not true. Do you not have anything better to do with your time?

ViviPru · 17/11/2011 10:51

MMMMMmmmm

May I recommend some and some

dozyrosie · 17/11/2011 10:53

I work in a deli. I can't say I've ever refused the sale of any cheese on any grounds. I've served obviously pregnant ladies with all sorts cheese, cured meat, bottles of wine and spirits.
Firstly who's to say it's for them.
Secondly the ONLY product I can LEGALLY refuse to sell is alcohol on grounds of age.
Thirdly what another pregnant lady consumes, be it food or alcohol is down to her and her alone.
Finally can you tell I'm heavily pregnant and would give my right arm for a rare stake and Gorgonzola sandwich... oh and plenty of wine?
YANBU at all, she is an idiotic jobs-worth

Trills · 17/11/2011 10:53

Shop staff have the right to refuse to sell anything to anyone.

They can refuse to sell you bread if they like.

gypsycat · 17/11/2011 10:55

The lady at the cinema refused to sell me a ticket to a 3D movie the other day. She said it was "bad for the baby" (I'm 29 weeks and quite obviously showing). She eventually caved after my DH told her to call the manager and she looked at my face (which was red from trying not to laugh my ass off).

A Woman's Right to Cheese.

This thread has made me cross and given me a craving for Stilton.

Thought you ought to know.

Kladdkaka · 17/11/2011 10:56

What do you mean you are going to buy Stilton somewhere else? Sod that for a pile of brie! Buy you stilton in there and seek out the same checkout assistant to process it. Throw in a packet of fags too.

ViviPru · 17/11/2011 10:57

Really gypsy? Thats INSANE. Another tick in the pros list of getting pregnant - I actively look forward to these encounters. Try it with VP. Go on. I dare you to deny me cheese and 3d movies....

Kayzr · 17/11/2011 10:59

Well my best friend says I am showing a bit. Thought I'd hide it a bit longer than this.

To the people that want to know if I have something better to do. Well yes I do. Eat Stilton on toast and hope the morning sickness doesn't come back. Oh and cuddle DS2.

*Shop staff have the right to refuse to sell anything to anyone.

Not true. They are bound by equalities legislation just like everyone else.

nancerama · 17/11/2011 11:02

YABU to have bought anything from them. I would have flounced to another more reasonable shop.

MenopausalHaze · 17/11/2011 11:03

This story has a funny smell about it - and it's not the whiff of stinky Stilton!

hiddenhome · 17/11/2011 11:04

The hardware store on the highstreet refused to sell me some Bostick last year Sad It was because I had a sore nose (caused by ds2 fiddling with it) and they thought I was a gluesniffer Shock I told them this couldn't possibly be true because I go to church, but they didn't believe me Hmm

I'd never been so humiliated in my life and I told dh to buy his own Bostick in the future Grin

gypsycat · 17/11/2011 11:07

ViviPru, God's honest truth. I was too shocked and found it too funny to even attempt to be mad!

SardineQueen · 17/11/2011 11:14

They can refuse to sell you anything they like.

They are not allowed to refuse to sell you something and say it is because you are eg black.

But if they just don't want to that's fine.

SardineQueen · 17/11/2011 11:14

"I told them this couldn't possibly be true because I go to church"

Grin brilliant line

Humiliated woman in shop "but I go to church!!!!"

love it

LizzieMo · 17/11/2011 11:22

How did they know it was for you, anyway? Not that you haven'y got the right to eat Stilton if you want to.
