I really don't know.
Blush
Surely the gusset is there for a bit of moisture leakage?
Or a sanitary towel for periods?
Or a pad for urine leakage?
My DM was useless at this sort of thing.
So, please explain.

nice one Rush. I'm gonna take a day's annual leave to read your thread and polish my gusset knowledge :-)

smartyparts · 15/11/2011 19:59

I have often wondered this, but never asked! They look like they'd be uncomfortable to me.

2rebecca · 15/11/2011 23:38

Gussets are designed to be breathable though where as panty liners aren't so women who wear them out of concern for keeping perfect knickers (what for, they aren't exactly sexy if they have a panty liner attached ?) are at risk of more infections and discharge than those who just feel that is what your knickers are for and why you change them every day.
Most knickers aren't exactly expensive so if your gusset bleaches you buy a new pair, no one is going to be wearing panty liners with their expensive Agent P stuff (I hope)

KittyFane · 16/11/2011 06:46

2rebecca no but It would be silly to ruin my Ultimate Magic Secret Support? Body Define High Leg Knickers for the sake of a panty liner! They are £20 a pair FGS!!

What are panty liners for?

Well, in order to make even bigger profits, manufacturers have once again created a problem that didn't exist before, convinced us that we have that problem, then sold us a solution to it.

So, panty liners are there to create profit for the companies that sell them, to add to our rampant destruction of the planet and to make us feel insecure about our bodies.

You may not need them but I certainly do but others do.

halfacup · 16/11/2011 08:18

I thought panty liners were for light period days and everyone had a sperm towel! You learn so much on mumsnet! Now I wonder if they are for putting in your after sex knickers to make it to the bathroom for cleaning up purposes without any unpleasant drips across the landing.

Sparklingbrook · 16/11/2011 11:19

Or after a steamy lunchtime session when you go back to work?

2rebecca · 16/11/2011 11:42

I think I'm less bothered by a few damp bits on my knickers than some folk. I hate wearing panty liners. It's definitely venturing into old ladysville to me to want to wear them when not menstruating.

Splinters · 16/11/2011 11:42

Many thanks to whoever posted the link to congealed gussets haven't laughed quite so much for ages or at least since the last bumwiping thread--

Splinters · 16/11/2011 11:45

Oh, and I had absolutely no idea that the gusset bleaching I sometimes heard people referring to was a natural process. I assumed it must be something people wearing white knickers did to get rid of skidmarks. A truly educational morning!

FreakoidOrganisoid · 16/11/2011 11:55

What catsmother said.

TeaOneSugar · 16/11/2011 12:00

I have a knackered cervix.

Bugsy2 · 16/11/2011 13:52

I know I shouldn't ask this - but what has your cervix got to do with pantyliners TeaOneSugar? My cervix is less than it ought to be after a few violent & bloody loop excisions - but I'm struggling to connect it with a pantyliner! Wink

halfacup · 16/11/2011 13:58

Maybe the pantyliner is used as some sort of cervix hammock?

I was of the same opinion as everyone else...they keep your knicker bacon nice and dry.

FloydieDoydie · 17/11/2011 01:53

Grin @ knicker bacon!

Feminine · 17/11/2011 03:45

Spermysextowel · 17/11/2011 04:51

All this has made me remember that I did have a use for them once. Thongs used to be called G-strings, not sure why, but they were nothing but a small triangle of very synthetic fabric with lacy cheese-wire attached. The extra girth of a panty-liner could stop you from having your throat cut whilst dancing the night away in your ski-pants.

FellatioNelson · 17/11/2011 05:12

Are you young? Wait until you are my age. Then you know.

FellatioNelson · 17/11/2011 05:16

Plus, apart from just general sundry leakages, my periods now last three days proper, then about 7 days of half-hearted non-commital manky dribbling. Too dry for a tampax (ouch) too light for a proper sanitary towel but too messy for just knickers.

Sparklingbrook · 17/11/2011 06:26

Sadly Fellatio, I know exactly what you mean.

knockkneedandknackered · 17/11/2011 09:24

i use them to keep my pants nice and clean they come in good use when your on a night out and there's no toilet roll you dont have to drip dry keeps your pants feeling nice and fresh makes your pants last longer. and if your a toddler they love sticking them on the window to show the world.

seeker · 17/11/2011 10:23

Doesn't changing your pants every day and washing them keep them nice and clean?
