Are there no Social Services in the USA?

Ugh :(

JeanBodel · 12/11/2011 19:46

I'm not going to click on that link. But I agree with your sentiments.

NinkyNonker · 12/11/2011 20:02

Urgh.

Interesting fact I heard on QI a few weeks ago, the pilgrims didn't flee England to escape religious persecution. They left because England was too liberal and inclusive of other religions. Wonder if they have any descendants in this lot?
Something to remember, although this is in no way an excuse, that a lot of these sects are quite cult like and members of these sects are to a certain extent brainwashed into believing this is right.
It certainly does not make it any less sickening or make them any less answerable legally.

I quite agree with Dan Savage's term for the evangelists - American Taliban.

They and the Taliban are six of one, half a dozen of the other, IMO.

Deargdoom · 12/11/2011 20:23

I don't know that they can be classed as a sect- there are too many of them (and they seem to be growing fast) The Taliban are roundly condemned while this is accepted and protected by the so-called leader of the free world.

I was recommended shepherding a child's heart by ted tripp, by a family friend who lives in the UK. It's along the same lines I think. I think these books are pretty common among most christian in America and some in the UK. Disgusting.

ButWhyIsTheGinGone · 12/11/2011 20:27

Aware this isn't the best as far as anecdotal evidence goes - but I recently started playing an online game on FB. (saddddd I know) and, even sadder, I joined a group where people can add you to be their "neighbours."
A large proportion on the people who added me were Americans and almost without exception they have posted thing on my wall (until I relised how to get rid of them) about Christ, the evils of Atheism, CHRISTmas being only for CHRISTians - some of it quite aggressive in tone and content.
It's quite scary how narrow viewed these people are - living in the nation that claims ultimate freedom and the best quality of life for its people....

Hannah31 · 12/11/2011 20:31

Fook. Terrifying.

shouldnotbehere · 12/11/2011 20:33

LaurieFairyCake · 12/11/2011 20:34

To be fair they are as thick as mince.

There are no brain cells to rub together.

hiddenhome · 12/11/2011 21:10

Reminds me of those sadistic nuns in those laundries in Ireland Sad

Deargdoom · 12/11/2011 22:23

The sadistic nuns didn't write books recommending their brutality to parents.

Blimey

The right wing christian conservatives in the US scare the crap out of me. It's true, they're no different than the taliban. Their views are ingrained so deeply and are so radically departed from reality that I find it inconceivable that they manage to even exist in society. They make my blood BOIL. I am so thankful that I met a wonderful Yorkshire lass and moved to the UK 10 years ago.

The fact that these nutjobs are slowly taking over mainstream politics in the US makes me fear for the future. People think it's scary that Iran and its' wacko president may be building an atomic bomb? Wait another 5 or 10 years when these loons in the US have completed their takeover and control the largest nuclear stockpile in the world.

IneedAbetterNickname · 12/11/2011 23:08

:( Gives true Christians (like me) a bad name! But then the bible can be read and interpreted so many different ways, by so many different people!

pigletmania · 12/11/2011 23:13

Where are child welfare services in the US! So basically they are advocating child abuse, nice! They are using Christianity as a veil to abuse children.
