to ask what you're ironing?

FOlding laundry last night I thought: I don't iron and I don't think I look particularly rumpled. I sort of smoosh things flat as I fold them, and ... I don't think we look that bad (I may be kidding myself). DH irons himself some work shirts, I iron fitted shirts if I'm wearing them but I've more or less structured my wardrobe so I don't have to iron much.

But my DM seems to spend her LIFE ironing. She irons sheets, pillowcases, you name it. I didn't think I was being a slattern (gasp!) but now I wonder- what do you iron?

and AIBU to think Ironing is a terrible soul-destroying activity, and one should drink tea and MN instead? :)

nowt.

dh does his shirts and ds's shirts but thats it. I imagine if I went for an interview I might iron a shirt but my normal work clothes dont need ironing - throw on and go shift dresses in tweed or other non scrunchy material.

valiumredhead · 12/11/2011 12:29

I fold from the drier. My dh was in charge of buying a new drier when I was in hospital having ds - he bought one with a 'smoothing option' so no need to iron. I LOVE him for that! Grin

TastesLikePanda · 12/11/2011 12:30

I iron nothing... never iron!

Ok this is a lie - I ironed a halloween costune I made, to set the fabric paints...
That was three years ago :)

TheOriginalFAB · 12/11/2011 12:31

All I iron is the kids uniforms and DH's work shirts and trousers.

Before DS1 was born I washed and ironed everything, babygrows, sheets, muslins, socks Hmm. Never saw an iron again.

Fo0ffyShmooffer · 12/11/2011 12:32

Ironing IS a soul destroying activity but I.just.can't.not.do.it. I don't iron underwear, nightwear or bedding but yep everything else. It's a compulsion Sad

valiumredhead · 12/11/2011 12:34

After ds was born I suggested that dh buy non iron M and S work shirts unless he wanted to iron himself. So he did! Grin

LadyBeagleEyes · 12/11/2011 12:35

I just fold and put away too. If it comes out of the drawer crumpled then I'll give it a quick iron before I put it on.
Life's too short for ironing, and as for ironing sheets, never ever.

My iron and I do not have a close relationship at all, I only iron once in a blue moon, much to the disappointment of my mother and grandmotherGrin

OldGreyWassailTest · 12/11/2011 12:40

Never - haven't ironed for years and years. If either of the males in this house need a shirt they iron it themselves (usually once a year for the Christmas Do).

marriedinwhite · 12/11/2011 12:42

This will unfold into those who do and those who dont' I do (my cleaner does two hours ironing per week and comes in specially, I do what's left). DH would not iron but wants it done and it isn't a problem because he pays for it.

Everything that takes a crease and is worn on the outside plus boxers, hankies, pillowcases, duvet covers, cotton nighties and jim jams.

I don't iron any other underwear, fitted sheets, towels, teatowels, jersey interlock nightwear.

I quite like ironing - chance to switch off and iron in front of the telly. I iron pretty much everything apart from DPs running stuff and underwear.

CupOfBrownJoy · 12/11/2011 12:43

I iron work shirts, but they sit in the basket for weeks while I wear other things instead. I specifically try to wear things for work which don't need ironing, but every so often I have no more excuses and have to wear a cotton shirt.

Other than that, nothing.

blackcurrants · 12/11/2011 12:47

I should confess that when we stay with DM I absolutely LOVE going to bed on her crisp, soft, bedlinen and it might be cos the sheets have been ironed.

Or it could be cos she's got better sheets than my 'left over from when I was a student' IKEA duvet cover... Hmm maybe I might be a bit more of a slattern than I thought.

SO I like the effects of ironing, but not actually enough to do it. Still, I'm glad I'm not alone in my ironing-free life! I imagine it might change if/when DS needs school shirts. We'll see.

Ginmakesitallok that's me really. The agreement is that I get the remote and watch whatever crap I want all night. I still don't really like it though.

I only iron my surplice.
which means twice a year (unless it gets dirty inbetween - like when the flower ladies drip something orange/rusty-looking onto the stand where I normally drape my surplice before putting it on Hmm )

other than that, I iron some summer dresses.

quietlyafraid · 12/11/2011 12:54

Whats ironing?

catgirl1976 · 12/11/2011 12:55

Never iron. If something needs ironing I iron it as and when. DH irons his own shirts as I am shite at it.

TrinityRhino · 12/11/2011 12:57

nothing, never iron a thing

grovel · 12/11/2011 12:59

Getting into bed with crisp, clean, ironed sheets and pillowcases is one of life's happier moments. You don't know what you are missing.

DressDownFriday · 12/11/2011 13:02

Big pile of ironing + Sky Sports = DH ironing (he doesn't complain) Grin

troisgarcons · 12/11/2011 13:11

Most things that need ironing - school shirts, PE kits, polo shirts, trousers , jumpers, blouses, t-shirts, trousers, jeans etc

I do not iron mental things like sheets, towels, tea towels, dusters - or socks, knickers, bras like my mate does. But she likes ironing.

I can't stand the kids going out looking like shit bags. It doesnt take 2 mins to whizz an iron over a polo shirt and crisp the collar up.

I say this - having just ironed the colars and 'v's on shirts this week due to jumpers being worn! Grin

wonkylegs · 12/11/2011 13:15

Odd things irregularly - try not to do it much altho in summer I wear a lot if linen so I have no choice.
DH does his shirts if we forget to take them out of the tumble dryer quick enough
No bed linen but I do do tablecloths for special occasions .
Nothing of DS's and I'm not sure that'll change even when he goes to school
