to ask what you're ironing?

FOlding laundry last night I thought: I don't iron and I don't think I look particularly rumpled. I sort of smoosh things flat as I fold them, and ... I don't think we look that bad (I may be kidding myself). DH irons himself some work shirts, I iron fitted shirts if I'm wearing them but I've more or less structured my wardrobe so I don't have to iron much.

But my DM seems to spend her LIFE ironing. She irons sheets, pillowcases, you name it. I didn't think I was being a slattern (gasp!) but now I wonder- what do you iron?

and AIBU to think Ironing is a terrible soul-destroying activity, and one should drink tea and MN instead? :)

I hate and defuse ironing, BUT I iron everything.

I can spot unironed clothes from a mile off. I have a colleague who will happily tell everyone she doesn't iron a thing... You only have to look at her to know that she doesn't.

TooEasilyTempted · 12/11/2011 13:18

Despise not defuse! This phone is the bane of my life!

SarahStratton · 12/11/2011 13:21

I do not own an iron. Grin

iscream · 12/11/2011 13:21

Some shirts, table cloths and napkins, some cotton clothing I prefer pressed. I do pillowcase and duvet covers because I like the smell when I get in bed.
If I get in an ironing mood, I have been known to rob ds's shirts (he never irons anything) and do them. I sometimes do fil's, although he tries to stop me. He then checks to make sure I ironed both inside and out. Hmm
I did that for him, but don't for us.

mumeeee · 12/11/2011 13:38

I don't iron anything if I can help it.

mumeeee · 12/11/2011 13:40

I've never needed to iron a polo shirt they come it of the machine without creases.

SoupDragon · 12/11/2011 13:41

At the moment, a crochet snowflake but thats not what you mean.

DSs school shirts about the only thing i always iron. i may iron other stuff whilst I'm at it but really? Life is too short.

Ticklemonster2 · 12/11/2011 13:43

Iron all my littlee boys stuff other that vests and pjs. Iron my work stuff and anything that looks like it needs it.
My mother (bless her) ironed everything other than pants/sock and towels.
Each to their own, but it's just one of life's annoyances.....

anonymousbird · 12/11/2011 13:44

DD's Hama beads.

rockinhippy · 12/11/2011 13:46

Things I make & as little else as I can get away with :)

Naoko · 12/11/2011 13:47

I don't even own an iron. I informed DP that if he wants his clothes ironing he can bloody well do it himself, he replied he prefers them unironed. Suits both of us :o

My mother irons handkerchiefs. I think she's mad. She, in turn, thinks my grandmother is insane for ironing fitted bedsheets. Both mum and granny think I'm useless for ironing nothing at all, but when pressed both have to admit we do not in fact look creased.... (I hang everything out very carefully when it's wet, and it dries without creases.)

GwendolineMaryLacey · 12/11/2011 13:49

DD's clothes, mine and DH's jeans and various creasey trousers. And very soon, about a ton of babygros.

SjuperWolef · 12/11/2011 13:50

iron clothes out everyday for dp the kids and myself if they need done and all some of dps boxers too. not bedding or towels or jammys tho.

NinkyNonker · 12/11/2011 13:50

Iron?

heleninahandcart · 12/11/2011 14:21

Absolutely nothing at all.

ElizabethDarcy · 12/11/2011 14:23

I have ironed a shirt of DHs... once in ten years ;)

I am quick to get laundry out the machine and fold them well. I do have a cleaner come in once a week who irons if there's a pile too. If linen is badly crumpled then yes, I'll ask her to iron it, but she generally does clothing only.

Red2011 · 12/11/2011 14:25

No, don't do ironing. Waste of time.
I did manage to colour this morning's load of washing pink though as I put a 'handwash only' bright pink top belonging to DD in. I blame that on lack of sleep - she was ill last night and threw up over loads of stuff. Loads of time, so had to do midnight wash to stop the stink in our 1-bed flat!

I suppose as and when she goes to school I might have to rekindle my relationship with the iron. Or perhaps I can teach her to do her own? How old should a child be before they can be trusted to iron stuff and not burn themselves :o

HighHeidYin · 12/11/2011 14:27

I used to iron everything, including underwear and teatowels

Then I got a life. And now I will only consider ironing if I have a meeting with the queen. Which is unlikely. And even then I'm sure I could get out of it... the ironing, not the meeting.

dh does his own shirts.

ScarfOfSexualPreference · 12/11/2011 14:27

I moved into my new flat in July this year. I bought a lovely, flash new iron and cheapy ironing board. Have yet to unwrap either! However I do a ton of ironing at work, from bibs to bedding so I think I'm excused!

mousymouse · 12/11/2011 14:29

I don't do ironing.
strategic drying all the way.
the only thing I have ironed recently were the sofa covers to get them a bit dryer before putting them back on after washing.

anonymousbird · 12/11/2011 14:29

FIL actually told me not to use a particular tea towel round their house once because "it's not been ironed yet". Shock.

I only started doing a bit of ironing once my children were at school, life was just too short and busy to do it any sooner. I have a fab steam generator which means that the little that I do is done in half the time.

Though I don't go near DH's shirts - he once was rather rude when I ironed one for him, so I simply said "never again then my dear" and I never have.

Slightlyreluctantexpat · 12/11/2011 14:46

OP, you mentioned that you might need to iron school shirts in the future?

No no no, you do not! Just buy non-iron type ones and do not bother.

Seriously, do not bother.

Either hang them up straight out of washing machine or give them ten mins of tumble dryer and then hang them up.

:o
