calling me from work at 1pm cos my DS4 fancied a sleep. They said he was ill and I rushed to school with a sense of urgency only to find him catnapping. He is singing and dancing now and generally rather pleased that he got to leave school early. SO so annoyed....

Yes YABU

Did your son raise his and and say "Miss, I fancy a little sleep"?

I doubt it

They clearly thought he was ill.

mumofthreekids · 11/11/2011 15:49

If he fell asleep in the middle of the school day his teacher is NBU in thinking he might be ill. Although I can appreciate it's annoying if he isn't.

violathing · 11/11/2011 15:50

NO he had twelve hours sleep last night and uses sleep to avoid situations that bore him. he is nearly 5 and will sleep if you let him but IMO the school shouldn't let him. I know that they are not babysitters but if he realises he gets to cum home if he falls asleep he will do it all the time

I do understand how you feel but it is VERY hard when you are a teacher to make the right judgement about whether a child is ill or not especially bearing in mind you have alot else going on at the same time. I have made the wrong decision numerous times, if i don't call and the child is really poorly then parents are cross, if I do call and they are not poorly then they are also cross. Once in a while I actually get in right.

For what it's worth I had the opposite this week with my DDs school. They uncharacteristically left her in the office with sat on a chair coughing her guts up and with a high temp and didn't call me. I was home, could easily have gone to pick her up and she felt dreadful by the end of school. I didn't moan because I know it is a very hard call.

Cherriesarelovely · 11/11/2011 15:51

Although, she WAS visibly ill so it is a bit odd! Still, she is on the mend and they are usually very caring and spot on.

fuzzynavel · 11/11/2011 15:51

Why not notify the school that he tends to "sleep when bored"

worraliberty · 11/11/2011 15:52

I'm sorry but you need to take this up with your son

He's playing the teachers and he's playing you too

The school has to err on the side of caution with children and illness. Imagine if he banged his head and didn't tell anyone and the 'sleep' turned out to be concussion?

zippadeedoodaa · 11/11/2011 15:54

You need to write to the school and tell them that their lessons are clearly understimulating your son and if he appears about to fall asleep the teacher needs to do a little dance to entertain him so he remains awake.

lilyliz · 11/11/2011 15:56

that takes me back,in primary 1&2 we got to nap between 1.30 and 2.00 pm,I think it let the teacher plan her lessons.

violathing · 11/11/2011 15:56

Have notified the school - apparently they have a few bean bags in reception
where they are allowed to nap if they need to. Beyond me
I have taken it up with my son and told him it is unacceptable to sleep in class.

Frustrating as it is, school is there to teach kids not baby sit them, therefore if they are not teachable (because they are asleep or what ever) they should not be in school

MamaMaiasaura · 11/11/2011 15:56

YABU and he's not even 5 yet! If he sleeps excessively speak to dr as for him to sleep when bored would be quite unusual imo

valiumredhead · 11/11/2011 16:06

What Awen said - sounds very odd to me. A 5 year old using sleep to avoid things? Confused

boohoohoo · 11/11/2011 16:07

Mmm I've got to be honest its very difficult to get a five year old to sleep unless they are tired, in what way do you mean he's bored? I taught five year olds for many years, never known them to get bored, me on the prefer hand.....

boohoohoo · 11/11/2011 16:08

Doh, other not prefer.

MenopausalHaze · 11/11/2011 16:09

Have you got any other amusing excuses for his behaviour or is it just that one?
I feel for the teachers, I really do.

OrmIrian · 11/11/2011 16:11

If any of my kids fell asleep in reception I would have assumed they were ill or at the lest sickening for something. They were too full of energy and excitement. it isn't common I would suggest for a 4 yr old to do that.

violathing · 11/11/2011 16:11

School shd not let children go to sleep in the middle of the day, a 4 yo will try it given half a chance. All he needed was a nudge or two and he would have carried on.

OP posts:
zippadeedoodaa · 11/11/2011 16:12

No most 4 year olds I know wouldn't

valiumredhead · 11/11/2011 16:14

After 12 hours of sleep I would be wondering why he was able to go to sleep so easily tbh. The average 4 year old fights sleep especially in a busy classroom.

MenopausalHaze · 11/11/2011 16:15

Precisely Valium. OP needs to get chld to doctor for a check up - less time blaming school, more time being proactive about child's health.

zippadeedoodaa · 11/11/2011 16:16

DD is one of the younger ones in reception and has fallen asleep in school once.....and she was poorly.

boohoohoo · 11/11/2011 16:23

Sorry but four year olds will only sleep if they are either ill or tired, either way any teacher would be concerned. There is far too much going on at school for them to 'just sleep', somethings amiss here, get him checked out by a doctor.
