to wonder how woman could inflict deliberate pain, presumably twice, on her 2yo DD

In Claire's earlier today whilst two year old having her ears pierced - she was sat on grandmother's knee, mum and grandmother both said hold still etc, assistant fired gun thing and child screamed and screamed. Had to leave the shop as too upset to stay and see how on earth they were going to persuade the little mite to hold still for the second one..... As a mum who cried when taking DCs for vaccinations, and regardless of the aesthetics or otherwise of small children with pierced ears, I just cannot understand how someone could do that to their child.

She was probably more startled at the gun sound than any 'pain'

GypsyMoth · 10/11/2011 16:51

They do both ears together usually, how do you mean, second one?

tigerandtabs · 10/11/2011 16:51

No, it was definitely wails of pain, went on for too long - anyway, we all know it hurts, so my question was, why on earth would you do that to your DC? I genuinely do not understand and would welcome some illumination!

AndTheyCalledHimSantyClaws · 10/11/2011 16:52

5yo dsd didn't even flinch when she had her ears pierced

tigerandtabs · 10/11/2011 16:52

Was just the one that I witnessed - maybe they were planning on letting her forget and then surprising her with the second when she least expected it....

brandybabycham · 10/11/2011 16:53

I cried getting my ears pierced and refused to get the second ear done......I was 12!

ObiWan · 10/11/2011 16:54

Oh come on.

I'm sure that with just a little effort you could come to understand. Are you perhaps being deliberately obtuse?

The child wasn't having a limb amputated.

GypsyMoth · 10/11/2011 16:54

Mine never hurt!

tigerandtabs · 10/11/2011 16:54

SantyClaws I am glad, but unless there is a freakishly high genetically passed down pain threshold in your DSD's family, then surely the expectation would be that it would hurt, so why would one do it when they are too young to make the choice for themselves?

We haven't had one of these threads for ,oooh at least a week

usualsuspect · 10/11/2011 16:56

I've got my bingo dabber out again

Sirzy · 10/11/2011 16:56

I don't see why any parent would make that choice personally! There is no need for holes in your babies ears!

If they want to do it when old enough to understand then fine but not before

happydotcom · 10/11/2011 16:57

Babycham - I cried too but was 17!

Clossaintjacques · 10/11/2011 16:57

I didn't feel any pain either but I wouldn't get a my DC's ears pierced because I don't like it on young children.

Now immunisations they hurt babies Shock

tigerandtabs · 10/11/2011 16:57

ObiWan Am not being deliberately obtuse, just really would love to hear from someone who has done it what their thinking was. Maybe should have asked the mum in Claire's....

Why does a two year old need to have its ears pierced.

It is child abuse.

I don't give a fuck which culture you represent, just before someone throws the "well in some cultures..." bollocks into the mix, some cultures condone genital mutilation and murder too but we don't condone that on the basis of culture either..

you · 10/11/2011 17:00

Blimet, not even enough time to locate the start button.

Xmasbaby11 · 10/11/2011 17:00

I don't understand it either. I had mine done at 12 and it hurt like hell. I wouldn't consider it until they were old enough to actually want it for themselves.
