In Claire's earlier today whilst two year old having her ears pierced - she was sat on grandmother's knee, mum and grandmother both said hold still etc, assistant fired gun thing and child screamed and screamed. Had to leave the shop as too upset to stay and see how on earth they were going to persuade the little mite to hold still for the second one..... As a mum who cried when taking DCs for vaccinations, and regardless of the aesthetics or otherwise of small children with pierced ears, I just cannot understand how someone could do that to their child.

I had mine done at 18 when I went to university at a proper tat & piercing place. I fainted dead away Blush

GypsyMoth · 10/11/2011 17:01

How did you know she was aged 2?

BeyondTheLimitsOfAcceptability · 10/11/2011 17:01

Bet she paid for it with her benefits, usual
Then went and bought a 50" plasma

tigerandtabs · 10/11/2011 17:01

I really didn't want to start a debate on the aesthetics of it, was just curiosity in the face of actually witnessing it. Usual suspect not sure why you ask if she was common - totally irrevalent to my question.

No one has answered my original question - please, please someone who has done it tell me what your thinking was, am genuinely interested. PM me if you have to, the thread has gone a bit toxic....

OP posts:
NinkyNonker · 10/11/2011 17:06

Nope, I think it is wrong too. Why would a 2 yr old want or need their ears pierced?

FreudianSlipper · 10/11/2011 17:06

if you were so bothered why didn't you say something, no far better to start a thread on here about how nasty and cruel some parents are

and it is not abuse how ridiculous read up on what abuse is and what those who have been abused have gone through

DeWe · 10/11/2011 17:07

I'm just remembering dd2 age 6yo when she had hers done. I was expecting huge wails as she's a big hypercondriac however you spell it, and a drama queen.
She stopped, looked around and said in some surprise. "It didn't hurt at all!"

Friend's mum was most disappointed as she was looking for the dramatic "it hurts" to put her dd off. Grin

TiarasTimeOutsAndTantrums · 10/11/2011 17:07

It's chavvy Grin

I don't think it is but I haven't had DD some yet in case any mumsnetters see and start a thread about it

TiarasTimeOutsAndTantrums · 10/11/2011 17:08

Done. Not some

Clossaintjacques · 10/11/2011 17:09

It's well chavvy too Wink

Freudian I didn't mention abuse, was just wondering about thought process and thought, clearly wrongly, that I might get a useful reply from someone on MN. Didn't raise it in the shop because it is something that is done pretty frequently and is therefore considered normal, so me butting in would have been unreasonable. Surely MN can be a forum for posing questions which we don't think it appropriate to pose in RL?

It can hurt (did me!), can become sore afterwards and infected and be really uncomfortable at night. I don't understand why you would do this to a child as young as 2 either.
And so what if this topic has been done before? Surely if the topic is tedious to you then just don't comment?

BeyondTheLimitsOfAcceptability · 10/11/2011 17:17

Didnt hurt me, wouldnt think twice doing it for a baby DD if I had/have one.
They cant play with them, and you can keep them clean easier, so much less likely to not get infected than on a child/teen.

Popbiscuit · 10/11/2011 17:17

I don't know the answer, OP, but I do know that it is really culturally important to some people and I don't think it's abuse. There are lots of lovely East-Indian families in our neighbourhood whose little girls all have their ears pierced. These are not abused children, but rather treasured ones, so I think you are being a tad over-dramatic.

DD had hers done at 9 and didn't cry or flinch but then she had waited about three years to get them pierced so was pretty excited.

BeyondTheLimitsOfAcceptability · 10/11/2011 17:17

But then I live on a council estate Grin

BeyondTheLimitsOfAcceptability · 10/11/2011 17:19

So can just dose my future DD up with strongbow if it hurts her

FreudianSlipper · 10/11/2011 17:21

i responded to others too

but still why if she was screaming and screaming would it not have been better to say something than come on here telling us how you could not do this but others can

no one is going to come on here and say i held my child down and did not care that they were in pain because i wanted their ears pierced and you know that
