AIBU to think that Jimmy Savile lying in state (so to speak) is quite distasteful and how long before he is beatified?

Hmm

Huh? What's wrong with it?

He had a lot of adoring fans and did absolutely loads for charity, therefore I imagine it's pretty par for the course.

MenopausalHaze · 08/11/2011 21:48

How is it hurting you personally though? He was a hero to a lot of people and his celebrity is by no means in the same league as the OK and Hello Slebritty of popular culture!

AgentZigzag · 08/11/2011 21:50

People were always 'laid out' in days gone by, it's only recently we want to distance ourselves from people who've died.

If laying someone out is to let people pay their respects, Jimmy Saville had a lot of people who thought a lot of him.

I don't find that distasteful.

worraliberty · 08/11/2011 21:51

Blimey, when I was growing up they were laid in state in the front room of the house (family...not celebrities)

itsokaytodisagree · 08/11/2011 21:53

On a bar in some hotel Hmm

JS was eewwww

OP posts:
MrBloomsNursery · 08/11/2011 21:55

He ASKED to be put in a golden casket and be laid out. They're just doing what he wanted. He obviously regarded highly of himself.

itsokaytodisagree · 08/11/2011 21:57

He did indeed regard himself highly. This is what I find distasteful. He was leader of his own cult.....the Jimmy Savile cult and everyone is buying into it. It's just so tacky and crap.

OP posts:
AgentZigzag · 08/11/2011 21:58

I'm planning on being laid out on checkout no. 7 round at Tescos.

I can't stand the shop, but 7's my lucky number.

AgentZigzag · 08/11/2011 22:00

Most celebrities regard themselves highly and go out of their way to foster it in other people, it's the name of the game.

JS was only tacky because he was associated with the 70's.

Maybe he was just a lonely man who wanted to feel somebody would notice he's gone.

worraliberty · 08/11/2011 22:01

Ziggers Grin

Ok so you don't like this guy

He died

You don't like his last wishes

Good job you're not invited to the funeral then OP

itsokaytodisagree · 08/11/2011 22:04

I'm really glad that I'm not going to his funeral.......I might actually vomit Sad

OP posts:
MenopausalHaze · 08/11/2011 22:06

I think you need to just get over it OP. It's piss all to do with you and impacts your life not at all. You've made your point - if you keep on and on making it you're going to start sounding a little bit strange.

AgentZigzag · 08/11/2011 22:06

'I might actually vomit Sad'

Fair bit of emotion for someone you don't know/didn't like.

BeaOnSea · 08/11/2011 22:08

Did he not fix it for you?

You sound very bitter

itsokaytodisagree · 08/11/2011 22:08

not really emotion, just an opinion and a figure of speech Wink

OP posts:
CaptainNancy · 08/11/2011 22:09

Why do you care?

shockers · 08/11/2011 22:10

I actually find your last post more distasteful than the idea of Jimmy Savile lying in state, OP Sad.

shockers · 08/11/2011 22:11

Sorry, your next-to- last post...

worraliberty · 08/11/2011 22:11

Bea Grin Grin

The guy raised over £40 million for charity...I wish there were a few more like him to be honest.

MrBloomsNursery · 08/11/2011 22:16

He was a very extravagant old man. I mean no normal person wears chains like that in old age...but he did. Maybe he just wanted to go out with a bang. Loads of rich people have outrageous funerals and coffins and gravestones. I don't see the big deal.

I find this a bit "hmmmm" and my opinion of JS was pretty low.

However, after he died I read about the voluntary work he'd done at Broadmoor Special Hospital for years and year.

I might not be a fan of JS, but anyone who gives their time for such an unpopular cause, but which is, I suspect is an institution which needs support, goes up in my estimation.

Whatmeworry · 09/11/2011 06:54

YANBU to be disgusted by cult of celebrity, I dont understand it either
YABU to be upset about JS lying in state, it used to be common.

CogitoErgoSometimes · 09/11/2011 07:41

YABU. Saville wasn't some empty 'celeb'. He was a knight of the realm, a papal knight, tireless charity worker, volunteer and gave most of his money away during his lifetime. The catholic tradition is for the deceased to lie in repose, usually at home, and mourners pay their respects. So he was in a hotel instead... so what? Those who went along did so voluntarily.... you might not have liked him but plenty did.

As for 'distasteful'... some of still think it's distasteful to bad mouth someone when they're not even cold in their grave Hmm

KellyKettle · 09/11/2011 07:54

My family still do this. Not in hotels, obviously, in front rooms. I think it's very nice.

When one of my Grandads died 18 months ago he was brought home and life went on around him. Neighbours and friends came to visit him, it meant a lot to my gran. She didn't want him to be alone before his funeral.

I think it's kind of sad actually that he is laid out in a hotel rather than the home of friends or family.
