AIBU to think that Jimmy Savile lying in state (so to speak) is quite distasteful and how long before he is beatified?

Hmm
OP posts:
KellyKettle · 09/11/2011 07:59

He had 4,000 visitors apparently.

Esta3GG · 09/11/2011 09:17

This "useless sleb" who raised £40million for charity in his lifetime is being buried in a green beret with a Royal Marines medal and a Help For Heroes wristband.
His coffin will be carried by 8 Royal Marines.

When the RM have such respect for you that they turn out to bury you then I really dont think anyone gives a monkeys what a few moaners on a forum think.

101North · 09/11/2011 09:19

It was a closed casket.

Whats the problem?

SardineQueen · 09/11/2011 09:33

I don't understand.
I don't really know what I think of JS but the posts by Esta, Cogito and others have pointed out he did a lot of stuff.
I don't understand why you care one way or the other. What's wrong with a dead person having their final wishes carried out? So you don't approve, so what?

MenopausalHaze · 09/11/2011 09:33

Only one moaner really Esta and a bit of an irrelevant one at that.

SardineQueen · 09/11/2011 09:33

I think the thing about his casket being buried at a 45% angle so he can "see the sea" is pretty cool myself. Inspired idea!

Esta3GG · 09/11/2011 10:06

Me too - along with the funeral cortege's quick jaunt round his favourite places - like his Mum's old house and Scarborough seafront.
One of my Irish uncles (in his coffin) was taken into his local pub for a final pint with his mates on the way to his burial.
I'd like to stop off at the chippy.

TurkeyBurgerThing · 09/11/2011 10:16

Jim'll wasn't exactly a "celebrity" like the cast off TOWIE. He was utterly bonkers, highly entertaining, and did an unbelievable amount of fundraising in his time. It's perhaps a bit odd in the fact that not many other people do this kind of thing now a days, but it's hardly distasteful!

SardineQueen · 09/11/2011 11:13

It's all a bit eccentric. Not distasteful. Eccentric is fine, personally I like eccentric, it makes life a more interesting.

oakleaffy · 08/04/2022 04:48

@BeaOnSea

Did he not fix it for you?

You sound very bitter

The OP has been exonerated. Savile has been exposed as a child sex abuser and necrophile.
UnadulteratedCat · 08/04/2022 04:51

Lol yeah zombie thread that did not age well for the replies to OP

MiddleParking · 08/04/2022 05:01

Oh Jesus. No idea why anyone is resurrecting this but those replies Shock

NotJustACigar · 08/04/2022 05:24

I found this thread so interesting- especially when compared to the more recent ones where all the posters claim to have found JS horrible all along. Nicely done tracking down this zombie, oakleafy Grin

SpidersAreShitheads · 08/04/2022 05:42

@NotJustACigar I thought the same about that thread too! Everyone claiming that they never liked him and definitely knew he was creepy......sure, OK.

I grew up with Saville on the TV (I'm mid-forties). Can't say I had particularly strong feelings about him one way or the other. He was just a "character" at the time, wasn't he? Like lots of the celebrities from that era. Obviously what's come out since has shown he was a truly vile man - but I really, really don't think many people knew or even suspected.

Personally, I was an enormous fan of Rolf Harris' cartoon time. Bloody loved it and thought he was brilliant. That one was a shocker when it came out. And Bill Cosby. Another childhood hero. Just shows you what a crock of shit the public persona really can be.

SpidersAreShitheads · 08/04/2022 05:43

^^Just to clarify - when I say people didn't know, I mean the general public.

Fridafever · 08/04/2022 05:52

Wow this has aged badly hasn’t it? Very interesting

Changeee1546789 · 08/04/2022 05:59

OP was right - what a Queen

AngelicaElizaAndPeggy · 08/04/2022 06:00

Wow. This is the first time I've seen Mumsnet as a primary historical source.

I didn't realise the date for a while and was thinking wtf? Don't these people know what he is and what he has done? And nope, turns out they didn't!

Can't believe that stuff about the Royal Marines!

HappyDays40 · 08/04/2022 06:04

Am I living in some sort of twilight zone. Nobody has mentioned his numerous sexual offenses and are finding this "distasteful". HE IS A SEXUAL PREDATOR WHO RUINED THE LIVES OF MULTIPLE PEOPLE. Why are people saying he was "extravagant " or "raised loads for charity. Do not glorify him he was nothing but a nasty paedophile.

HappyDays40 · 08/04/2022 06:06

Just realised that this is a zombie. Ii thought he was still lying in state year later!

Egghead68 · 08/04/2022 06:12

Yes! Really interesting to be reminded how he was seen at the time.

TeesandCees · 08/04/2022 06:17

This is a fascinating thread revival.

lurker69 · 08/04/2022 06:32

This was so strange to wake up to i was so confused until it was pointed out it was a zombie thread, some interesting opinions at the start i wonder if the posters still feel the same!

Shiningpath · 08/04/2022 06:35

In an ideal world, the posters who were positive could give us a little update on their views now but I’m sure it would just be a pile on.
