AIBU to think that Jimmy Savile lying in state (so to speak) is quite distasteful and how long before he is beatified?

Hmm
OP posts:
Fridafever · 08/04/2022 06:37

Worra is still very active on here would be interested to hear her thoughts. I’m sure she doesn’t still wish there were more of him!

AlternativePerspective · 08/04/2022 06:43

Thing is, at the time there were contrary threads where the rumours and opinions very much were articulated. But they were deleted as being in bad taste… Hmm

DomusAurea · 08/04/2022 06:44

@Esta3GG

This "useless sleb" who raised £40million for charity in his lifetime is being buried in a green beret with a Royal Marines medal and a Help For Heroes wristband. His coffin will be carried by 8 Royal Marines.

When the RM have such respect for you that they turn out to bury you then I really dont think anyone gives a monkeys what a few moaners on a forum think.

hahahaha - where are those JS fans now?
Kevinbrady · 08/04/2022 06:46

Interesting to read these replies!

SpaghettiNotCourgetti · 08/04/2022 08:18

Best thread revival ever. Oof.

veronicagoldberg · 08/04/2022 08:23

Well, this thread aged like milk!

mrburrsir · 08/04/2022 09:42

Very confusing to see this without realising the dates at firstBlush

Gynaesaur · 08/04/2022 09:45

Fuck me, this has aged badly.

x2boys · 08/04/2022 13:02

Well this is all very interesting compared to yesterday's thread where everyone "knew" what a dodgy character he was .

Sparklingbrook · 08/04/2022 13:09

@SpaghettiNotCourgetti

Best thread revival ever. Oof.
Or the worst IMO.
2Gen · 08/04/2022 13:39

I don't know why this thread has appeared in the feed so many years later but, after JS's hideous and multiple sexual abuse crimes have long been revealed, is it perhaps U of me to think those who defended the veneration of such a vile entity as Savile now wish they hadn't? Has it appeared to remind us how utterly unrealistic and mistaken an idea of the man many of us had back then?
Hindsight is a wonderful thing but the fact is, most of the general public, me included , had no idea of how depraved he was.
I do think your gut was telling you something though OP. You have turned out to be totally justified in thinking this was distasteful, to put it mildly! He won't be beatified either, quite the opposite I would suspect. He's getting what he deserves now!

There was a thread started yesterday about the Netflix documentary ,lots of posters claiming ,they knew,he was a "bad un" even when they watched Jim,I'll fix it as a young child , in contrast this thread shows that many people including myself didn't know untill it all came out about him .
BlueSkiesAreComing · 08/04/2022 14:16

Oh dear this hasn’t aged well. Especially @worraliberty wishing there were more people like him 🙈🙈🙈🙈 and then poster insisting if the Royal Marines think highly of him then he should be thought highly of.

Fascinating read - so many ganging up on the OP who had the measure of him.

ISpyCobraKai · 08/04/2022 14:22

Oof.

GrandTheftWalrus · 08/04/2022 14:34

I read this last night and wondered what the posters would be thinking now.

AlternativePerspective · 08/04/2022 17:46

I was on mn at the time he died and there absolutely were threads talking about what everyone apparently knew about him, and the kind of person he was. But they were removed as being in poor taste in the circumstances.

QuiltedHippo · 08/04/2022 18:01

Wow this aged well, good reminder that famous people really don't need defending by us mortals

RJnomore1 · 08/04/2022 18:04

Ooft 🙈

Mamamia7962 · 08/04/2022 18:10

GrandTheftWalrus - Probably thinking like the rest of us that Jimmy Savile was a highly intelligent, manipulative evil man who managed to dupe millions of people. Hindsight is a wonderful thing.

Mangogogogo · 08/04/2022 19:06

This is my favourite thread

latetothefisting · 08/04/2022 19:49

@AngelicaElizaAndPeggy

Wow. This is the first time I've seen Mumsnet as a primary historical source.

I didn't realise the date for a while and was thinking wtf? Don't these people know what he is and what he has done? And nope, turns out they didn't!

Can't believe that stuff about the Royal Marines!

really good point. I think MN should archive some of their posts (not sure which topics disappear after a set time?) - looking back on some of the March/April 2020 threads (with the posters shaking and crying when someone goes to tescos more than once a week and suggesting people could put cheese in their tea rather than leave the house to buy milk) would be fascinating from a social anthropology pov in a few years!
MiddleParking · 08/04/2022 20:21

It really puts you off liking or saying anything good about any celebrity ever again just in case! Same with Ian Watkins.

Sparklingbrook · 08/04/2022 20:50

There was some salivating on here a few weeks ago over a sleb who everyone said was a wrong 'un and it's all close to coming out apparently. [

DigitusImpudicus · 08/04/2022 20:56

That's gotta hurt to read back. Oof indeed.
