To not understand twitter?

BoobleBeep · 08/11/2011 19:29

Ok I kind of understand it but all the @'s and _'s and seeing what someone has replied but not the original post makes my eyes and head hurt!

OP posts:
laluna · 08/11/2011 19:43

Yanbu - I don't get it one bit. Wouldn't mind be enlightened.

LineRunnerSaturnaliaCometh · 08/11/2011 19:44

I asked my DD (15) and she says she hasn't got a clue either.

She says maybe this is because it's too shit to actually make sense.

Bless.

Snackbagofparkin · 08/11/2011 19:51

And what the jeff does #ff mean? I have no idea.

redcamels · 08/11/2011 19:53

#getwiththetimesloser

Kidding. I don't get it either. Baffling.

MardyBra · 08/11/2011 19:57

I find it a very disjointed. And I'm way too verbose and have to keep editing tweets to fit them into the character limit.

I think you have to tweet loads to really get anything out of it.

AgentZigzag · 08/11/2011 19:57

I don't quite 'get it' either.

I set up an account (DoubleAgentZZ if anyone wants to 'follow') a bit ago, am following 81 and have 41 followers, but I only made five odd posts when I first set it up and people were nice enough to say 'hello' etc, but now I'm not sure WTF to say without looking like a total twat? Confused

(I'm mostly confused because looking like a total twat never puts me off posting on MN Grin)

I had a look on the net and tried to get clued up on the netiquette of it all and just can't get the confidence together to go along with its casualness.

I love the advert that had 'I bought some broccoli lol' as a status Grin

redcamels · 08/11/2011 20:00

What do you think MN would be like of we could only use 140 characters (or however many characters Twitterers are permitted) per message?

Grin
MardyBra · 08/11/2011 20:01

I've just followed you AgentZ.

AgentZigzag · 08/11/2011 20:01

Don't you put a '#' before something so it'll be picked up by anyone searching for that tag word?

And '@' if it's directed at someone specifically?

I downloaded the tweetdeck thingy and it brings up all the references to your name so you can reply.

I might be completely wrong though.

AgentZigzag · 08/11/2011 20:02

You'll be sorely disappointed Mardy 'fraid Grin

But thank you.

MardyBra · 08/11/2011 20:03

Well that's the thing redcamels. There's no chance to expand an argument imo. It's a bit like going into a noisy pub where there are loads of conversations going on at once and it's tricky to butt in.

MardyBra · 08/11/2011 20:05

Have tweeted this thread so some proper twitterers can come and enlighten you.

giyadas · 08/11/2011 20:08

I've regained my love for twitter today, been off it for a while. I use it to harvest links mostly, by following news sites and bloggers.

MardyBra · 08/11/2011 20:11

There are a lot of MNers on there - it's a bit like a Twitter Quiche.

jkklpu · 08/11/2011 20:13

If you really want to get into Twitter, you have to devote some time to it and it helps if there's some topic that you're really interested in and want to learn more about. If you "follow" people with a similar interest who use Twitter well, ie who post links to relevant/interesting articles or blogs, then you'll get something out of it. But it's not that intuitive if all you want is to post messages about what you're doing that day and you have no focus for what you want from other users.

Putting a # in front of a word makes it more easily searchable. #ff is short for #followfriday. This is a tradition whereby on a Friday, Twitter users share the details of other users they like, so if you want to recommend Mumsnet, you'd post the following: #ff @mumsnettowers [I think that's their username but can't remember].

But it's all a lot easier if you use Tweetdeck or Hootsuite or another 3rd party application that allows you to organise the people you follow more easily into categories, or according to the search term that you're interested in, eg photography.

I think Twitter is great for sharing info and finding niche articles you others would never come across. But unless you have some time to get your head around it, probably give it a miss. But it's not true to say that, just because someone doesn't "get" it, it's rubbish.

CrackersandCheese · 08/11/2011 20:13

I totally did not get Twitter at first but really like it now. I mainly use it for work. It's useful for me to follow people and organisations that are of relevance to my job, to hear what the latest news it.

You meet like-minded people and chat in a similar way that you would do on MN. There are tonnes on mums on there and mummy bloggers etc.

I do recommend the Echofan app though if you fancy having a look at Twitter. I find it easier to message people and search for stuff.

Anything with a hashtag is a searchable term e.g #FF means Friday follow where everyone recommends other people that are worth following for one reason or another.

There's two main bits...the list of tweets of the people you follow- a bit like a Facebook status feed from your mates and then the list of tweets that you have done- a bit like your status updates on your wall.

hadagutsfull · 08/11/2011 20:14

Hi AgentZ - am also following you now! (sbjj24). I didn't 'get' it at first but the more I go on there, the more it makes sense. Mind you, I do more following and answering than anything else. Just take the plunge and stick with it!

CrackersandCheese · 08/11/2011 20:14

Bit of a x post there.. :o)

troisgarcons · 08/11/2011 20:15

I dont see the point of stalking following s'lebs.

Saying that, my son and some footballer have wonderful exchanges of twit twaddle.

And whats with the tweeting a twitter? surely you twit twitters? and shouldnt twitterers just be twatted?

PosiesOfPoison · 08/11/2011 20:15

Hello, over from Twitter. So #ff means friday follow.
@name is to address someone directly or talk about them knowing they'll see it.
#something means it gets grouped to search
140 ch. Is great. And you can look at whole conversations by either clicking 'in reply go's or 'conversation'.

I love Twitter on a good day.

MardyBra · 08/11/2011 20:17

I like the fact that one of the trending topics at the moment is: Frankie Cokeupthenozza

MardyBra · 08/11/2011 20:18

"And you can look at whole conversations by either clicking 'in reply go's or 'conversation'."
I've not found that - where do I click. that would definitely make things easier.

PosiesOfPoison · 08/11/2011 20:23

No idea what reply gos is, that's a typo!

So if I look at sbjj24 and she's written "yes I thought so @mmelindor" I can click on that post and see 'in reply to' or on PC click on the tiny square speech bubble to see conversation.

MardyBra · 08/11/2011 20:26

Oh that makes things a little less disjointed. Thanks Posies.

PosiesOfPoison · 08/11/2011 20:27

Are you following me Mardy. [Glares]
