to think that you should not watch Love Actually around a 3 year old??

My cousin, is crazy about christmas. She has already started making christmas cards, buying decorations etc. She loves it.

I called around the other night at about 6ish, and was shocked to see she had Love Actually on the TV while her daughter was there! Her DD was just playing and pottering about, obviously not totally watching it, but I was shocked that she would find it appropriate? I am mainly thinking about the scenes with the naked body double couple, you know with her who plays Stacey in gavin and stacey.

Now knowing my cousin, and how much she loves christmas, she will just have been getting in the mood for it, I know it's one of her faves. But around a 3 year old? is it just me or is that innaproppriate?

Yabu! It's just you! It's Love Actually, not Debbie Does Dallas! And it's not your kid! Chill!

SnapesMistress · 07/11/2011 08:41

A 3 yr old won't care or even notice something naughty is happening, nakedness should still be normal for them at that age and not something to remark over. She is not even watching, just playing, she probably finds it very boring.

SequinsAndSparkles · 07/11/2011 08:42

Grin Ok, well yes, it's not exactly Debbie Does Dallas. It just made me feel a bit uncomfortable and squirmy!

Oh fgs sake get a grip, it's not like the 3 year old understands the film is it?

SlinkingOutsideInSocks · 07/11/2011 08:44

You're kidding, aren't you?! Confused

The nudity in LA is so benign it's untrue - it truly wouldn't register on a 3YO's radar. I speak as a Mum of a nearly 3YO - I wouldn't hesitate to have this on in front of him.

YABU. :)

SlinkingOutsideInSocks · 07/11/2011 08:45

OP, you know nudity is OK, don't you?!

LoveInAColdClimate · 07/11/2011 08:46

YABU! Sorry.

spookshowangellovesit · 07/11/2011 08:48

yabu and a bit insane i am afraid. 3 yrs dont care what their parents watch.

SequinsAndSparkles · 07/11/2011 08:49

Blush Yes, it's not the nudity...it's just the groping and pretending to have sex bits. I am clearly being uptight, never mind Grin

I pretty much agree with other posters that for a three-year old, the nudity/themes etc are not an issue. However, the implication of the replies is that 3 years is not an issue as they won't understand/register, which begs the question at what age do you all think that it would not be appropriate to have the film on? And then at what subsequent age would you then think it OK? I wrestle with this all the time as my DCs are 13 and 11 and would be interested in others' views.

spookshowangellovesit · 07/11/2011 08:49

should point out i am naked right now!

GwendolineMaryLacey · 07/11/2011 08:53

I think dd (3.9) would have plenty of questions to ask at LA! The nudity wouldn't bother her but I could predict "mummy what's that lady doing?". The question is whether you want to have that conversation there and then and whether you want LA to be the catalyst.

spookshowangellovesit · 07/11/2011 08:56

i really have no idea at what point i started to say to my children no you cant be in here for this its a grown up film, or to my 11 yr old who constantly wants to watch 15 etc what age does the box say?...then no. but i suppose its just common sense, you know you dont want your child handling themes they shouldnt to soon and at some point you will turn around when watching something and see they are too and think they are a bit young for this and it goes from there, or thats my experience.

MenopausalHaze · 07/11/2011 09:08

I'm a bit short on grips today as there was a bit of a run on them yesterday but here - I think you're a deserving case.

Have a grip!

HeidiKat · 07/11/2011 09:13

What is the age rating on this film, PG or above? I don't think you are being totally unreasonable, some of the content of this film is not suitable for a toddler, as well as the nudity there is some strong swearing in it. If she wanted to get in the mood for christmas there are plenty of children's films to watch instead.

MenopausalHaze · 07/11/2011 09:16

How is the age rating relevant if the child is not sat down, popcorn in hand, for a good night's watching?

GypsyMoth · 07/11/2011 09:16

Is this another wind up??Confused

QuimFabray · 07/11/2011 09:16

Watching Love Actually is BU. Shitty film.

bruffin · 07/11/2011 09:20

YANBU - there is simulated sex scenes in LA so no would not be happy watching it with a 3 year old around

LadyBeckenham · 07/11/2011 09:21

I would not watch it around my 3 year old, they take in so much more than you think. But then we don't watch any telly that's not Cbeebies or sport until she is in bed.

So YANBU.

bruffin · 07/11/2011 09:23

It's rating is 15

HeidiKat · 07/11/2011 09:24

I think the age rating is relevant if the child is in the same room as the film being played, whether the child is paying attention to it or not is irrelevant, they are like little sponges at that age and pick up everything whether you think they are listening or not, you only have to look at some threads where children have piped up in the car with "fucking wanker" or similar as they have picked this up from their parents while driving. I have recently asked my DH not to listen to certain CDs while driving DD as he is a fan of rap and I really don't want her exposed to "bitches and whores" type lyrics whether she is actively listening or not.

paddypoopants · 07/11/2011 09:25

I'm with quimfabray watching Love Actually at all is BU- it is one of the worst films ever. I wouldn't want any dd of mine mind infected with that cod romantic bilge

poorbuthappy · 07/11/2011 09:27

Isn't there loads of swearing in it? That would stop me watching it in front of my kids rather than the nudity.

LoveInAColdClimate · 07/11/2011 09:30

To be fair it's been some years since I saw LA so I may have blanked out some unsuitable elements... I remember the nudity being rather uneventful and don't remember any significant swearing?
