My cousin, is crazy about christmas. She has already started making christmas cards, buying decorations etc. She loves it.

I called around the other night at about 6ish, and was shocked to see she had Love Actually on the TV while her daughter was there! Her DD was just playing and pottering about, obviously not totally watching it, but I was shocked that she would find it appropriate? I am mainly thinking about the scenes with the naked body double couple, you know with her who plays Stacey in gavin and stacey.

Now knowing my cousin, and how much she loves christmas, she will just have been getting in the mood for it, I know it's one of her faves. But around a 3 year old? is it just me or is that innaproppriate?

Gotcha Wink

Operation Enigmatic Designer is a go, that's a go

jamaisjedors · 08/11/2011 20:49

chipping (if you're still interested!), the DS are 7 & 4. They go to bed theoretically at 8, but it's 8.30 til I'm downstairs and then begins the loading of the washing machine, the preparing of school bags, the clearing of tables etc... So it's realistically at least 9 before I can sit down.

Although actually the evening TV thing is a bit theoretical anyway as I teach and am usually working (or mning) in the evenings.

Actually that's the HUGE advantage of mn for me - and probably why I don't feel deprived of TV, I can do it while the DS are around (for the moment anyway)!

DilysPrice · 08/11/2011 21:05

I think the swearing would be the problem for me, Richard Curtis films think that swearing is big, clever and funny. As a good MN-er I tend to agree but I didn't want my DCs to find it out just yet (sadly they are now rather older than 3 and it is Too Late).

And it's sods law that your normally oblivious 3 year old would suddenly pipe up with "What's that man doing with that lady?"

becstarsky · 08/11/2011 21:06

Poor DH. He'd be mortified. But I should admit one thing - he's not enigmatic. In personality he's nothing like Karl, he just looks like him - or he did when the movie came out.

beachholiday · 08/11/2011 21:58

The naked body doubles storyline was ommitted from my dvd of Love Actually, but yes, vague memories of it when I first saw it in the cinema now.

So my dvd would be completely toddler-safe anyway.

SpringHeeledJack · 08/11/2011 22:06

aahhh

did you also have a snide copy from Malaysia, like what I done?

saw the unexpurgated version with MIL, by mistake. Not quite what we'd been expecting Grin

beachholiday · 08/11/2011 22:16

^^ Thailand Wink. the full version does rather differ from the censored one!

I found my DD at the age of 2 to be so fascinated by Disney's romantic scenes that she began staring at any couples anywhere who were being intimate or close in any way - even on a travel advertisement. She even asked why my brother was not in a couple. I began fastforwarding all the 'love' scenes in Disney. She would have been far too aware of anything sexual like on Love Actually. You never know when a child is listening or watching or observing or learning, and Love Actually also has some pretty strong language.
I think that children need to remain children and not be sexualised. Sexual abuse includes exposing a child to sexual content at an inappropriate age, and this includes films on TV. That is why the 9pm watershed exists in the UK (or used to!!).

Where the fuck is my fucking coat

Cremebrule · 21/12/2019 13:07

I think a lot of people must have forgotten that a lot of the nudity is stimulated sex. There’s no way I’d be comfortable watching love actually in front of my 3 year old. There are themes of bereavement, adultery, swearing etc. It’s totally inappropriate.

Jenpop234 · 21/12/2019 13:07

Nah. It's fine. Bit of nudity. Couple of mild swear words. All fine.

Cremebrule · 21/12/2019 13:09

Oh bloody hell 2011.gah!

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 21/12/2019 13:54

I can't remember any swearing in it - I must've been asleep and missed it!

Yes, Richard Curtis films always contain a lot of OTT swearing, gratuitous nudity and a foolish character called Bernard.

He makes very good watchable films, but his style is such that you think they're feel-good and family-friendly on the surface of it, but you quickly realise that they really are usually rated 15 for a very good reason.

I'd say that a baby wouldn't know any difference (as opposed to films which are very sweary-aggressive and visually violent), but I'd worry about the development of a NT 3yo who could be exposed to a 15-rated film and not take in anything harmful or have unhelpful ideas or questions for their age.

A huge amount of people seem to make the mistake of thinking that young children don't take in, process or think about things before they actually start trying to do or say them themselves. They're mirroring the behaviour of those around them. Do they think that children only start trying to talk or walk on instinct and not at all because they've seen/heard others doing it?

lidoshuffle · 21/12/2019 14:21

I know it's a zombie thread, but "stimulated" sex made me laugh.

churchandstate · 21/12/2019 14:35

It’s a 15, isn’t it? I’ll watch it but I’ll fast forward the dodgy bits.

Butchyrestingface · 21/12/2019 14:37

YANBU.

Swearing
Simulated sex
A 15 certificate

And a shite movie to boot.

Butchyrestingface · 21/12/2019 14:37

And the kid is probably old enough to watch the movie now. Crown Grin

OnePotato2Potato · 21/12/2019 14:44

ZOMBIE THREAD 🧟‍♀️

dottiedodah · 21/12/2019 15:03

I would feel fine about it TBH. Cant really remember any nudity (maybe fell asleep during that bit!
