to think that you should not watch Love Actually around a 3 year old??

My cousin, is crazy about christmas. She has already started making christmas cards, buying decorations etc. She loves it.

I called around the other night at about 6ish, and was shocked to see she had Love Actually on the TV while her daughter was there! Her DD was just playing and pottering about, obviously not totally watching it, but I was shocked that she would find it appropriate? I am mainly thinking about the scenes with the naked body double couple, you know with her who plays Stacey in gavin and stacey.

Now knowing my cousin, and how much she loves christmas, she will just have been getting in the mood for it, I know it's one of her faves. But around a 3 year old? is it just me or is that innaproppriate?

I'd be less worried about the sex, the 3YO probably wouldn't have noticed if she was playing.

The swearing though is a different matter (think about TIffany saying where the fucks my fucking coat). My 4YO would pick that up immediately.

So YANBU but I on a different point to the one you're primarily concerned.

valiumredhead · 07/11/2011 09:33

YANBU, Love Actually is SOOOOOOOO boring, the 3 year old could be mentally scarred for life. I think a quick phone call to SS would be in order.

Lexie1970 · 07/11/2011 09:33

YANBU

People need to remember that children are like sponges and will pick up anything - a lot of it does seem like osmosis ;)

If LA is rated 15 then it is quite clear that children shouldn't watch it or have it on in the background - I am pretty sure there is some swearing in it as well? Maybe some people find a 3 year old swearing amusing but probably not quire so funny when they are 10.....

I think you do need to be concious of what children see DS watched ET last night and got quite upset which I didn't expect so now know not to put anything that is sad on the telly for a while longer (he is 4 1/2)

poorbuthappy · 07/11/2011 09:34

passes loveinacoldclimate a dictionary and points at significant

valiumredhead · 07/11/2011 09:36

I can't remember any swearing in it - I must've been asleep and missed it!

spookshowangellovesit · 07/11/2011 09:37

you are suppose to get upset at et...thats the point of it.

SarahStratton · 07/11/2011 09:41

YANBU. LA is one of my favourite films. But, I wouldn't let a child watch it with me because of the simulated sex scenes. It's inappropriate.

valiumredhead · 07/11/2011 09:43

Perhaps I am getting confused with Notting Hill? Now that was a yawn fest!

LoveInAColdClimate · 07/11/2011 09:45

Poorbuthappy - this isn't pedants' corner! I meant I wouldn't be fussed about the odd "bloody" but wouldn't be keen on a relentless stream of "fuck". Had, TBF, forgotten about "where the fuck's my fucking coat".

Redrubyblue · 07/11/2011 09:47

Ahh Carl/Karl the enigmatic head designer in the film is the most beautiful man I have ever seen. I watch the film just for his scenes. I would drink his bathwater.

Sorry. Three year old. Suitable. Don't care.

Back to Karl. Who is he? What else has he been in?

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 07/11/2011 09:48

I don't think the Joanna Page scenes are suitable viewing for a child.

SuePurblybilt · 07/11/2011 09:52

I don't watch adult tv in front of DD, apart from nature stuff. She likes those programmes, mostly for the sex and violence Wink. But I cannot understand the people who think that daytime telly, most of the news, the inane cacklings of Loose Wimmin or Jeremy Kyle is suitable background noise for young children. Let alone daytime showings of CSI or similar.

Based on that list, Love Actually would be fairly inoffensive but it wouldn't be a first choice either.Still, better that than the utter shite that is 'Nativity'.

AlpinePony · 07/11/2011 09:57

I will need to watch this today, I'd forgotten how dramatically dirty it was! Hmm

MrsRhettButler · 07/11/2011 10:00

Going off on a bit of a tagent here but I couldnt believe it when I realised ch 5 and other channels are showing CSI in the daytime! It's really graffic!

I obviously check what my dd (6) watches but I'm not in with her every second and now she can use the remote she can potentially put whatever she likes on! (as I said I do keep an eye but still..) she probably wouldn't be fussed by it as her fav show is Primeval Hmm thanks dp. Although I do think CSI is much much worse than that.

Love actually..... YABU

Fo0ffyShmooffer · 07/11/2011 10:03

YANBU - I have a 3 yr old and I wouldn't.

LoveInAColdClimate · 07/11/2011 10:03

MrsRhettButler - for a second there, I thought you were saying I was BU Grin.

Tortoiseonthehalfshell · 07/11/2011 10:06

Three year olds watch, and ask questions, and retain information which they subsequently need to process. Mine (just three) will bring up an unusual or distressing event months later, needing it explained to her again. And by distressing I mean, like, the time I took her to a toddler class and I was stupidly hormonal and fragile and this little kid hit me over the head with a cushion and I started crying. I mean, it was hardly nature tooth and claw.

So why would you think that it's alright to have a film rated 15 on around a three year old? Are the grip-getters thinking a three year old doesn't understand and won't retain any images? Or that the adult themes will pass them by? Or perhaps that LA should in fact be rated G? Is it the fact that the three year old wasn't completely watching it?

MrsRhettButler · 07/11/2011 10:12

No not you love Grin but we could start a bunfight if you like and call each other VERY UNREASONABLE! And start throwing insults for no reason? Tis MN after all...

poorbuthappy · 07/11/2011 13:57

Actually love I feel the same. The odd bloody is fine, but there is a lot of fucking!!

banana87 · 07/11/2011 13:59

YABU. I had Dirty Dancing on around DD the other day, what do you think of that judgey pants? :)

nicknamenotinuse · 07/11/2011 14:12

strewth.

SuePurblybilt · 07/11/2011 14:14

I'd think you were wrong banana, thanks for asking.

LorainneK · 07/11/2011 14:21

YANBU - even if the child is not actually watching it they pick a lot more up than you might think.

dreamingbohemian · 07/11/2011 14:22

I guess YANBU -- it's not just nudity in LA, there's 2 or 3 fairly explicit sex scenes

But it's only a few minutes of the whole film so it would be fairly easy to distract or remove a child for those brief scenes (this is what my mum did with me when I was little)

dreamingbohemian · 07/11/2011 14:24

redruby Karl!!

Sooooo unbelievably gorgeous. He's Brazilian so I've heard a lot about him from my Brazilian friend -- apparently he was like the Tom Cruise of Brazil or something? Unfortunately the only other thing I've seen him in is 300, he's the guy playing Xerxes, and is stupidly covered in gold paint, face piercings and CGI
