to want to tell you that HSBC are having system malfunctions and that is why your card may be declined?

I've just had the shock of the week, both my cards were declined and when i went to the ATM, it refused to let me access my balance.

AIBU to grossely misuse AIBU and split an infinitive in my haste to let you know that if your HSBC card has been declined, it is most probably not because someone's hacked your bank of your account is mysteriously empty - it's because they're having 'global system errors' according to the lady on the HSBC helpline. It too me ages to get through so thought I would pass it on! They said it would be sorted asap.

A couple of weeks ago the ATM wouldn't give me any money but said there was "an unspecified error" and to visit the branch. Luckily I was at the branch so I went in and asked for cash, giving them my card. The cashier said "use the ATM" so I explained, she looked at her screen and said "our cash is broken today, you can use an ATM at a different bank and get money though" and smiled really sweetly... Confused

PomBearAtTheGatesOfDoom · 04/11/2011 15:25

oops should have said HSBC ATM and branch!

diedandgonetodevon · 04/11/2011 15:25

Ah thank you, that explains why I can't access my online banking and the phone lines are not working either.

AnonWasAWoman · 04/11/2011 15:28

Yes, that's why died. I got the 'this service is not available' message on the phone too, but eventually got to speak to a real person after trying every number I could think of.

It just occurred to me it would be worth spreading the message on here as loads of people will see it.

Incidentally, the lady I spoke to introduced herself as 'Lalita from HSBC' - that's a departure isn't it? Usually they have to say they're Jane or Sue and it was nice to hear what was presumably her real name.

I've been trying to make some payments online for the past hour and it keeps telling me about a system error!

Not happy!

Barclays has been doing the bloody same. Twice my card was declined stating pin error, which was bollocks. It's damn humiliating !

AnonWasAWoman · 04/11/2011 15:50

It is humiliating, yes! I was trying to buy some books in a charity shop and I felt like a right idiot - paying for cheap books on a card is a bit crap in the first place. Even thought I knew there was money there I still felt like I had a message flashing over my head saying 'profligate spender! buyer of over-many books!'

(Which is kinda true, but still ...)

tallulah · 04/11/2011 17:44

Oh that's a relief. Tried to pay my credit card online yesterday and they said the payment (on my HSBC Debit card) was declined. Couldn't understand why, especially when it then let me make the payment directly from the same account.

Trying to get through to Customer Service is nigh on impossible too. I rang before I knew about the issues and was on hold for 45 mins.

gethelp · 04/11/2011 18:07

Thank you lovely people, was just having a little panic at a 'please ring the bank' message when I tried to pay for something. I know the money is there!
